A closed low will move down the California Coast today with
scattered showers focused across the Western Mojave Desert and could
impact the Morongo Basin. Quiet weather is expected for Friday
before a stronger storm system brings widespread rain, mountain
snow, and gusty winds to the region beginning Friday night through
Sunday morning. Unsettled conditions will linger into at least
mid week next week.

Increasing clouds have been noted on satellite due to the closed low
bringing significant rains to southern California currently. Most of
this precip is progged to dissipate as it moves into western San
Bernardino County. Lowered PoPs somewhat a bit for the afternoon
period and limited the eastward extent of the PoP area. If any rain
does occur, it should be light and not impactful. Also modified
temperatures and dewpoints based off latest trends and the
CONSshort.

will continue on a path following the coastline southward
throughout the day today. Most of the precip associated with this
low will not extend very far east from the center of circulation and
as a result will only graze a small portion of our southeast
California zones. Southwest Inyo County and southwest San
Bernardino County could see some scattered shower activity this
afternoon which will then spread across the rest of southern San
Bernardino this evening. Have pulled back precip chances over
Mohave County and the Colorado River Valley based on the current
storm track. Have also dropped QPF totals which already weren't
impressive at around a tenth of an inch or less. Elsewhere,
increasing cloud cover is expected throughout the day with above
normal temps. On Friday, the low will have pushed east over
southern AZ/NM and a shortwave ridge will settle in for the day
ahead of the next incoming weekend storm system.

A more notable Pacific trough will move across Friday night
through early Sunday morning creating widespread impacts across
the region. Increasing chances for rain and higher elevation snow
will spread across areas primarily north and west of I-15 Friday
night into Saturday morning under a broad area of diffluence
ahead of the incoming trough. The heaviest precip with this system
will start across Inyo, Esmeralda, and Nye counties Saturday
morning and shift southeastward throughout the day on Saturday.
Heavy snow and moderate to locally heavy rain will accompany this
band of precip. Models are in good agreement regarding the onset
of precipitation but timing becomes more hazy with the movement of
the main precip band as the ECMWF has become much slower in
pushing this heavier band through than previously shown just 24
hours ago. Based on the current forecast, the best estimate of
timing for Clark County looks to be mid to late Saturday afternoon
and early evening. Rainfall totals for the lower elevations
through Sunday morning run from 0.25-0.75 inches for most areas.
Higher amounts are looking likely over Lincoln and Mohave counties
where totals between 0.75-1.25 inches are possible. Snow levels
remain above 6000 feet with any multiple-inch accumulations
focused above 7500 feet in southern NV and above 7000 feet in the
Sierra and White Mtns. For the White Mtns, Springs Mtns, and
Sheep Range, forecast accumulations between 7500-8500 feet look to
be between 4-12 inches with 12-18 inches above 8500 feet.
Similarly in the Sierra, anything greater than a couple of inches
looks to be above 7500 feet where 9-18 inches is possible and
near three feet at the crest. The Winter Storm Watch looks good
for now but once it is upgraded either to a warning or advisory,
timing will need to be shifted slightly later for the southern NV
mtns. Gusty winds will also accompany this system as it passes
with southerly winds spreading southward on Saturday gusting up to
30-40 mph. Decreasing precip chances can be expected from west to
east overnight Saturday into early Sunday as trough axis moves
through the local area and will be focused across Lincoln and
Mohave counties early on Sunday.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday.

The tail end of the weekend storm will be exiting across southeast
Nevada and northwest Arizona early Sunday morning where some
lingering showers may occur, but most of the Mojave Desert Region
will see dry conditions on Sunday. Attention then turns to a much
colder broad low pressure system diving out of Western Canada. The
base of the trough will dig over our forecast area Sunday night and
Monday then it will continue holding over the region Tuesday before
slowly pulling away to the east Wednesday followed by a ridge
building over the Great Basin and Mojave Desert by Thursday.

Moisture will be limited with this system, but there will be a
sufficient amount with the cold unstable air mass to produce showery
weather with snow levels dropping to the valley floors over Inyo
County and the Southern Great Basin and 4000-5000 ft MSL over the
Mojave Desert zones Monday. Snow levels will continue dropping to
around 2500-3000 ft over southern Nevada Monday night, but moisture
appears to be diminishing for any snow showers or flurries to be
observed in Las Vegas by Monday night. Precipitation chances will
continue to decrease Tuesday as a drying cold air mass engulfs most
of the region and brings low temps near or below freezing for much
of the Mojave Desert zones by Tuesday night. Temp guidance may be
running a little high given the pattern, but there is time for fine
tuning. A slight increase in temps appears likely Wednesday and
Thursday but readings should still be running several degrees below
normal.

.AVIATION...For McCarran....Mainly light and variable winds expected
for McCarran today with increasing VFR clouds lowering to about
12kft by late this afternoon. Wind directions will be highly
variable but generally with an east component. A shift to primarily
westerly flow will return by late this evening.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Valley sites will see mainly light winds today with
little impacts. Cloud cover over the Sierra is producing a broken
cloud deck over KBIH which will likely maintain through the majority
of the TAF period with some periodic breaks. Best chance for precip
will be at KDAG but model runs continue to trend dry. Only included
VCSH for this afternoon.
