.SYNOPSIS...Quiet weather and temperatures a few degrees above
normal can be expected today and Sunday. A storm system will bring a
risk of strong downslope winds to the Sierra and the Owens Valley
Sunday evening, then the Spring Mountains and the western Las Vegas
Valley Sunday night. Behind the storm, cooler temperatures and
strong northerly winds will spread across the entire region Monday
and Tuesday. Winds could linger in the Colorado River Valley for
much of the week.
&&

.SHORT TERM...through Monday night.

Satellite shows plenty of high clouds spilling down front side of
the ridge over the Great Basin early this morning. Fetch of moisture
extends well into the Pacific, so as ridge axis shifts east on
Sunday look for continuation in the high clouds. Mild weekend in
store with temperatures running about 4-6 degrees above normal.

More significant changes come Sunday night through Monday as
progressive trough digs southeast across the Great Basin/Mojave
Desert. Regarding precipitation. Leading edge will reach the
southern Sierra west of Bishop early Sunday evening. Precipitation
spreads east across southern Nevada Sunday night and into northwest
Arizona by early Monday morning. Scattered showers will probably
continue in the mountains through Monday afternoon before it all
shifts east into Utah/Arizona by 12z Tuesday morning. Eastern Sierra
slopes could see up to 0.50" QPF, which translate to around 3" of
snow at Aspendell with higher amounts to 6" above 9500 feet. 0.10"-0
.20" QPF for the mountains of northern Lincoln County with 1-2" on
new snow possible above 5000 feet. Elsewhere, less than a 0.10" is
forecast with little accumulation.

Main highlight looks to be the potential for strong winds. As trough
digs into the area its not the more favorable pattern for strong
downslope winds. Taking a cross-section across the southern Sierra
and using our hi-res guidance through 12z Monday shows a few hours
of 50 kt wind down to H85 Sunday evening. This runs does not show
winds penetrating eastward toward Highway 395. Same goes for the
Spring Mtn-Red Rock Canyon cross-section. Seeing the potential for 50
kts winds late Sunday evening into early Monday morning. MOS
guidance shows strong wind potential across the western Mojave
Desert Sunday night as well. Later Monday, potential for strong post-
frontal winds exists down the Owens Valley and Nye County. No
additional wind headlines were issued at this time.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday.

Gusty northerly winds will persist through the day Tuesday and begin
to dissipate late-afternoon through the overnight hours. Winds will
be concentrated along the Colorado River Valley and at the higher
elevations of our entire CWA. Widespread sustained wind speeds
expected to be from 25-35 mph with isolated pockets of up to 40 mph
and gusts 45-50 mph, meeting Wind Advisory criteria.

Skies will be clear, winds will be calm, and temperatures will begin
to approach seasonal norms Wednesday through the foreseeable future.

High temperatures Tuesday will remain a few degrees below seasonal
averages as we recover from the cold frontal passage. Throughout the
remainder of the work week, ridging will set up as a result of a
high pressure system dancing off the California coast, bringing us
steadily warming temperatures. Going into the weekend, temperatures
are expected to be as much as 4 degrees above average.

Shortwave disturbances through the week and into the weekend may
bring short spouts of northerly winds to our area due to the long-
duration longwave ridge, though they look to remain dry.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Winds will follow typical diurnal
trends with speeds generally 6 kts less. Broken cirrus AOA 20 kft.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Mostly light diurnal winds are expected across the
region, expect down the Colorado River Valley where lingering gusty
north winds will continue. Gusty north winds at KIFP and KEED should
remain below 20-25 kts. Broken cirrus AOA 20 kft.
