Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tulsa OK 622 PM CDT Sat May 18 2019 .AVIATION... CONCERNING TAF SITES KTUL/KRVS/KBVO/KMLC/KXNA/KFYV/KFSM/KROG. Rain and storms have moved out of the area with VFR conditions prevailing at the moment. Does appear that lower MVFR ceilings over central OK will spread over eastern OK between 00-02z and eventually into western AR later this evening. Scattered thunderstorms may eventually move into far northeast OK after 04z and as such will include a VCTS at KBVO. Drier air moving in from west will allow for a transition back to VFR conditions by late tonight into Sunday morning. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 259 PM CDT Sat May 18 2019/ DISCUSSION... Line of strong to severe thunderstorms/QLCS currently moving through northwest Arkansas. Conditions remain conducive for damaging down burst winds and tornadoes. This activity will sweep east of the region between 3 and 4 PM with the main severe threat ending. Atmosphere has been worked over behind convective complex, however there could be a modest recovery across far northeast Oklahoma as main upper trough axis lifts into southeast Kansas this evening. Strong deep layer shear, coupled with steep lapse rates and lingering low level moisture may allow a few storms to develop, but overall severe threat should remain low. Quiet/dry weather anticipated for Sunday behind departing system, however, as mentioned previously, active weather quickly returns on Monday with the potential for significant severe weather late Monday afternoon into Monday evening. Potent/highly amplified upper level trough will move out of the desert southwest on Monday, lifting northeast into the central plains on Tuesday. As system approaches, warm front will lift into northeast Oklahoma by late afternoon with moderate/high instability developing along and south of boundary. If storms develop, forecast point soundings continue to indicate the potential for a few supercells with the potential for strong long track tornadoes. Area with the greatest severe threat is expected to be near Tulsa and to the west, especially across Creek, Pawnee and Osage counties. Heavier axis of rainfall is still expected across south-central/southeast Kansas which would impact the Arkansas River and Neosho at Commerce for next week. Storms over northeast Oklahoma should weaken late Monday evening and refocus further west along frontal boundary across western Oklahoma early Tuesday Morning. Another line of strong to severe thunderstorms will likely sweep through eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas during the day Tuesday as main upper trough lifts northeast into the central plains. Atmosphere along/east of line will again support the threat for damaging down burst winds and brief tornadoes, mainly along and east of highway 75 where instability will be the highest. System should remain fairly progressive therefore widespread rainfall amounts only around an inch are expected. coverage across northwest Oklahoma early this evening. These
storms will likely weaken as they move east into northeast
Oklahoma later this evening, but at least a marginal threat of
hail up to quarter size and wind gusts to 60 miles an hour may
exist, mainly in areas to the northwest of Tulsa.
