Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Topeka KS Issued by National Weather Service Wichita KS 313 PM CST Fri Mar 1 2019 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday night) Issued at 307 PM CST Fri Mar 1 2019 Forecast highlights focus on impending winter storm Saturday night through early Sunday, and bitter cold air through early next week. A potent shortwave currently off the California coast will move rapidly east over the region Saturday night through early Sunday, spreading widespread accumulating snow across Mid-America. Snow should start from west to east 7-10pm Saturday, and end 6-9am Sunday. Despite the system's fast movement, this will likely be an efficient snow-maker given strong lift amidst a deep isothermal layer in the dendritic snow growth region. There are also hints of weak instability above the strongest lift, further enhancing snowfall rates. Consequently, expecting snow to liquid ratios on the order of 15-20:1. With model consensus supporting total liquid amounts of 0.20-0.40", this should support widespread snow accumulations of 3-6", likely heaviest generally along/south of I- 70. Can't rule out a few higher amounts. Given the light/powdery nature to the snow along with the expected 15-25 mph north winds likely producing considerable blowing/drifting, decided to upgrade to a winter storm warning for Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary and Morris counties. Do not think winds will be nearly strong enough for blizzard conditions. Left the winter storm watch in place most everywhere else to account for some minor changes in the forecast track. Along the far northern row of Kansas counties where amounts should stay below warning criteria, issued a winter weather advisory. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday) Issued at 307 PM CST Fri Mar 1 2019 In wake of this system, bitter cold Arctic air will spill south across the region. High temperatures Sunday will likely only reach the single digits and teens, with wind chills well below zero. With fresh snow cover, clearing skies and slackening winds, Sunday night lows should dip well below zero, possibly down to -10 for central and northern counties. Meanwhile, coldest wind chill values Sunday night into Monday morning will likely be -15 to -25. Anticipate later shifts will need to contemplate a wind chill advisory or warning for these periods.
