...WINTER STORM WARNING IS CANCELLED...

This Winter Storm Warning has been cancelled as snow has or is
quickly coming to an end across the warned area this evening.
While snow may be ending across the region, motorist should still
be prepared for winter driving conditions, especially given
temperatures below freezing and wet road surfaces. Be especially
careful when driving over bridge decks or walking on elevated
surfaces. In addition, trees and powerlines could still fall given
the weight of the heavy, wet snow still remaining on them.

.AVIATION...
Updated 1222 PM MDT Wed Sep 25 2019 (25/18Z TAFs)

Begin this TAF period with VFR conditions throughout. Overnight,
expect rainfall to develop from north to south, reducing conditions
to MVFR in rain. Icing conditions develop, as well. Expect gusty
winds particularly across north and central Montana with the
strongest winds forecast along the Rocky Mountain Front. Turbulence
will develop. Additionally, Virga is forecast as moisture evaporates
in the gusty winds. As always downbursts can be expected in and near
Virga.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 553 AM MDT Wed Sep 25 2019/

Today through Thursday Night...A strong northwesterly flow will
continue as subtle and brief ridging noses northeastward into the
region through tonight. This will bring a day of drier weather with
near normal temperatures and a brief break from gusty winds. Not
expecting any significant chances for precipitation but there could
be a stray shower or two over eastern Hill and Blaine Counties this
morning. A fast moving disturbance embedded within this
northwesterly flow will then usher in an extended period of active
weather beginning Wednesday night. Winds and clouds will increase
ahead of this system as an associated clipper system approaches from
the north and begins to move across the area starting early Thursday
morning and continuing into Thursday night. There will be a pressure
gradient increase in response to this system across the area
resulting in strong gusty westerly winds initially along the
Northern Rocky Mountain Front. At the same time, there will be an
area of 50 to 60 kt 700 mb winds that will sweep through the region
during the day on Thursday. This will encourage the gusty winds to
expand into the plains and valleys during the morning hours, with
the strongest winds anticipated to be over the central and north-
central areas and over locations on the lee side of terrain. These
winds will make travel in high profile vehicles difficult,
especially over roadways that run north to south such as Interstate
15 and US highway 89 in north-central Montana. Also, anyone with
recreational plans should be aware that wind gusts could exceed 60
mph on mountain ridgetops. With the anticipation that winds may
exceed high wind criteria, the high wind watch for the
Northern/Southern Rocky Mountain Front and eastern Glacier County
was upgraded to a warning while the watch was allowed to continue
for central and north-central Montana. This watch will likely be
upgraded to a warning later today. Rain showers may develop
throughout the region by early Thursday morning and this activity
may persist through Friday morning, although the most widespread
precipitation will occur during the day on Thursday. Snow levels
will likely be above 8000 feet for the bulk of this disturbance,
mostly impacting areas above mountain pass level. With that being
said, snow levels do drop to the 6000 to 7000 level later Thursday
evening into the pre-dawn hours on Friday for areas along the Rocky
Mountain Front and for the mountains of Central Montana. This could
result in some scattered light mountain snowfall in these areas.
Winds are forecast to diminish Thursday evening, while precipitation
also becomes more scattered across the area Thursday night, as
stated above. Temperatures on Thursday cool to slightly below normal
levels. Overnight lows for Thursday night will mostly be in the 30s
and 40s.

Friday through next Wednesday...A Canadian cold front will be
through North Central and Central Montana on Friday, and it should
linger over Southwest Montana into the day on Saturday. During this
time, a low pressure center within a large-scale trough will move
south into the Pacific Northwest, putting the forecast area under a
moist southwest flow aloft. This will likely bring rain showers and
high mountain snow showers to much of the area Friday into Friday
night, with a slight chance afternoon thunderstorms in the
southwest. Temperatures will gradually begin to cool with highs in
the 40s and 50s and lows in the mid 20s to mid 30s. The cold air
will continue to push south behind the front on Saturday, causing
more widespread accumulating snow in the mountains, rain in the
southwest valleys, and a mix of rain and snow for the northern
plains. The coldest air over the plains will initially be along the
Rocky Mountain Front, making that area most likely to see
accumulating wet snow on the plains. The southwest flow aloft will
be more diffluent there as well, for the best chance of heavier
precipitation. This area of the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent
plains is the focus for the Winter Storm Watch, so will leave that
in effect, as the cold air will remain in place there through the
day on Sunday for a more persistent wet snowfall. Northeast winds
could also gust to 40 mph at times close to the Rocky Mountain Front
and west over the Continental Divide, making periods of near-
blizzard conditions possible. Overall, daytime temperatures will
fall into the 30s at lower elevations across the entire area
Saturday into Sunday with overnight lows well into the 20s
(potentially record-breaking cold). However, lower elevations along
and east of a line from Dillon northeast to the Sweetgrass Hills
will warm up to near/slightly above freezing, which will help at
least partially melt snow and bring more uncertainty to snow
accumulations, so will hold off on winter highlights there for now.
Precipitation will gradually decrease Monday into Tuesday as the low
pressure center moves farther to the south away from the area. It
will then lift northeast over Montana Tuesday into Wednesday, but it
will be significantly weakened, so the chances for additional
precipitation will be lower as well. Temperatures will also remain
much colder than normal into early next week. Coulston
