Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 1100 AM MST Fri Feb 1 2019 .SYNOPSIS... An upper level ridge currently over the region will give way to an upper-level trough over the weekend. Mild temperatures today and Saturday will turn much colder Saturday night into Sunday as an arctic cold front moves southward through the region. Additionally, periods of snow, heavy at times will be possible Saturday night into Monday. && .DISCUSSION... Today through Saturday...An upper level ridge over the region will continue to bring mild conditions to Southwest and Central Montana. The mild temperatures will continue into Saturday, including overnight lows over North Central MT. Winds will be breezy/windy at times, but overall wind gusts should remain below warning criteria. Saturday night through Monday...An arctic cold front will move southward through the region. Expect a chance for a very brief rain shower ahead of the front, but any rain will quickly change to snow on Saturday night as colder air rushes in from the North. Temperatures could be below zero by Sunday morning over North Central MT, with little to no rise during the day. Periods of snow will develop along and behind the front. The snow could be heavy over the mountains and right behind the front. Thus a winter storm watch has been issued for much of the region. The airmass will continue to get colder through Monday, with wind chill highlights likely being needed as well. For Tuesday through Friday...Expect very cold temperatures through much of the period, with temperatures starting to turn slightly warmer on Thursday and into Friday as warmer southwesterly winds redevelop over the area. However, the cold air will likely be slow to move out the Havre/Harlem areas. Some wind chill highlights might still be needed during this time frame. Any snow should be diminishing on Tuesday, with little to no snowfall expected Wednesday through Friday at this time. && .AVIATION... Update 1800Z. VFR conditions expected to persist. Main impact to aviation through the TAF period will be gusty west winds along the east slopes of the Rockies along with areas of low level wind shear and mountain wave turbulence downstream of the Continental Divide. Expect a low pressure system to begin impacting the region from the west after 20Z Saturday in the KBZN area, spreading east through the day.
