Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 144 PM MST Sat Mar 2 2019 .SYNOPSIS... Cold temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills will impact the region through the remainder of the weekend and potentially into early next week. High pressure settles in over the Northern part of the state tonight, with some gusty winds increasing over parts of north and central Montana. Otherwise, some drier conditions are expected for much of the region over the next day or two. && .DISCUSSION... Tonight through Tuesday night...Cold temperatures will persist over much of the region through the early part of next week, along with drier conditions and some gusty winds causing dangerously cold wind chills over parts of North and Central Montana. There is potential for some valley locations to see ambient temperatures as low as -40F tonight. Issued a Wind Chill Advisory for parts of Central Montana through Sunday morning, and a Wind Chill Warning for Blaine, Hill, and Ferguson Counties for this evening through early Sunday afternoon. Coldest wind chills will likely be during the overnight period tonight and tomorrow night, especially when gusty winds increase tonight over our eastern most counties. The temperatures and accompanying wind chill values will likely increase during the day tomorrow, depending on how much sunlight we receive. However, once the sun sets and starts transitioning to night, the very cold temperatures and wind chills are likely to return. Tuesday will see an upper level ridge build across the area. Dry conditons are still expected. We will however see a shift to a more west to southwest flow. This will bring some warming, although still below normal temperatures. -TP Wednesday through Saturday...A shift to a slightly more active pattern may then be found in the long term forecast. Two large upper level lows across the Pacific NW will send waves of energy and moisture over the region as early as Wednesday and continuing through the end of the week. Chances for snow will be found for most areas, although widespread and long periods of precipitation does not look prevalent with these more progressive moving disturbances. One concern will be the potential for freezing rain, mainly across the southwest, for Wednesday into Thursday. Confidence is low at this point and will be something to watch over the coming days. With this Pac NW air mass warming temperatures are also expected for mid to late week. With all the snow on the ground it may still be tough to see normal temperatures. Although some areas could see temperatures warm into the 20s to perhaps low 30s. With cold temperatures at night and warming during the day, the threat of ice jams will continue. -Anglin && .AVIATION... Updated 1030 AM MST Sat Mar 2 2019 Some lingering MVFR/IFR conditons under persistent snow showers continue over parts of Southwest Montana, including KBZN and KHLN terminals. These conditions are expected to taper off quickly over the next few hours to VFR conditions, as higher pressure builds into the area from the north. VFR conditions along with very cold temperatures are expected to persist through the remainder of the TAF period. Mountain obscuration is possible through this afternoon. -TP && .HYDROLOGY... In the Ennis area, emergency management reports flood waters from ice jams on the Madison River and O'Dell Creek are spilling over portions of U.S. Highway 287. A flood warning has been issued for this area until further notice. A flood warning is also in effect for an ice jam on the Gallatin River near Logan. Ice jamming on the Missouri River south of the City of Cascade has caused minor flooding to develop across portions of Southwest Cascade County. This minor flooding has led to the closure of Sheep Creek Road.
