.SYNOPSIS...
A prolonged cold snap begins tonight as cold air moves into the
region. Snow develops overnight and becomes widespread by Sunday
morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected from Western Montana
through Central and Northeastern portions of the state. Periods of
light snow continue through Monday night. Wind chill values could
fall below -30 at times, through mid-week across North-central and
Northeastern Montana. Temperatures are expected to remain below
freezing all week.

.DISCUSSION...
The anticipated Arctic front has moved into North-central Montana.
Temperatures along the HiLine have dropped 20 to 30 degrees in
less than an hour with the passing front while producing northerly
wind gusts to 35 mph. Expect the front to accelerate through
central Montana early this evening. The front eventually will
filter through southwest Montana, but the temperature change south
of I-90 will be less severe. However, strong southwest winds
continue over the higher terrain of southwest Montana. Low clouds
and fog are developing with the frontal passage. Snow is observed
at Cut Bank. However, it may take some time to develop snow over
the area as we await the arrival of a mid-level shortwave trough
that will eject off the large west- coast storm.

Forecast models remain consistent in depicting a broad band of
heavier snowfall developing overnight into early Sunday. Total
snow amounts of 6-12" are likely in this band extending across
central into northeast Montana. Snow impacts to travel on Sunday
will become significant surrounding the Helena area including
MacDonald pass, Boulder, Elk Park, Lincoln, and the central MT
mountains. Additional high impact areas extend north and east to
include Great Falls to Havre. Even where snowfall amounts are less
than 6 inches, plummeting temperatures and blowing snow will
create travel hazards. Overall Winter Storm Warnings are warranted
and remain in effect. Refer to the Warning statements for
additional detail in snow timing and amounts.

Shortwave ridging will help reduce snowfall rates Sunday night,
but orographic forcing will continue to produce snow as
temperature trend ever colder. Wind chill advisories or warnings
may be warranted for North-central Montana Sunday night as ambient
temperatures drop near, to below -20F. Another minor shortwave
ejects from the southwest on Monday, producing additional areas
of light snow through Monday night. High temperatures on Monday
and Tuesday are likely to remain below zero for North-central
Montana. As precipitation ends for the north on Tuesday, another
shortwave disturbance cross southwest Montana to produce another
round of snow, this time mainly south of I-90.

Areas of snow finally end by Wednesday, with dry weather prevailing
through the end of the week as ridging aloft strengthens over the
northwestern US. However, northwesterly flow aloft and persistent
snow cover will keep temperatures below freezing through the
whole week ahead.

Update 2355Z. Arctic cold front is now south of a line from Great
Falls to Lewistown. It will continue to move southward to a line
from around Dillon to Ennis by 18z. Expect widespread snow to
develop overnight. Kept out moderate/heavy snow at this time, as the
period/area of heaviest snowfall a bit uncertain, but do expect the
best chance for heavy snow on Sunday morning. Expect periods of snow
to continue into Monday, with widespread LIFR conditions or worse in

...Arctic Cold is moving in...

Very cold air is now moving southward into Central MT. As of
3 PM, the cold air was just moving into the Great Falls,
Highwood, and Denton areas. Expect temperatures to drop between 20
and 30 degrees within 1 hour of frontal passage. Additionally,
wind chill values will fall into the single digits.

The cold front should be moving into the Cascade, Neihart, and
Lewistown areas around 5 PM.

...Arctic front continues to move southward...

AS of 515 PM, the arctic cold front was just south of a line from
Dearborn, to Hobson to Lewistown. Temperatures are falling from
the 40s into the teens in less than one hour, as wind chill values
fall to around 10 above.

The cold front should move into the Helena and White Sulphur
Springs area around 7 PM.
