Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Great Falls MT 1046 PM MST Thu Nov 21 2019 ...AVIATION SECTION UPDATED... .SYNOPSIS... Mainly dry conditions with some patchy areas of fog will be found tonight. Friday sees more dry conditions, warming temperatures, and breezy winds. This weekend then looks to continue to be warm, with breezy to windy conditions at times especially Saturday night into Sunday. Some rain and snow showers may also return this weekend, mainly on Sunday. && .UPDATE... Areas of dense fog have once again developed in northern portions of the Great Falls forecast area. At this time, the coverage of the fog does not appear to be widespread enough to warrant any highlights. However, this will continue to be monitored overnight. Have updated the forecast to add areas of dense fog and have significantly lowered overnight low temperatures in some locations. Remainder of the forecast is in good shape. mpj && .AVIATION... Updated 1046 PM MST Thu Nov 21 2019 (22/06Z TAF Period) Clear to mostly clear skies and widespread VFR conditions are expected to prevail for a majority of this TAF period. However, areas of fog and dense fog have developed across portions of the Hi- line tonight, especially for KHVR and the neighboring Milk River Valley. The fog in this area may persist into the morning hours. There is less confidence for fog settling into the KCTB area but this can occur if overnight winds remain light. Otherwise, winds are still expected to increase along the east slopes of the Continental Divide tonight into Friday morning and then spread out over the adjacent plains by Friday afternoon. Stronger winds aloft could cause areas of Low Level Wind Shear at times along with turbulence aloft. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 437 PM MST Thu Nov 21 2019/ Tonight through Sunday...High pressure extending from the Pacific NW will continue to bring dry and mainly clear conditions through tonight. There is just enough breeze across the Rocky Mountain Front to bring some blowing snow across roadways today. With these winds expected to continue through tonight, expect isolated areas of blowing snow along these same areas through tonight and perhaps into Friday morning. Impacts will be minimal so have held off on any advisories. Meanwhile light winds and cool conditions across the Hi-Line will set up for the potential of more fog tonight into Friday morning. Confidence remains moderate as westerly winds should increase tonight, although may need to be monitored for any fog advisories. The remainder of the area should remain dry and clear tonight, with some west winds increasing, and low temperatures near to slightly above normal. A dry clipper system the looks to skirt across the area on Friday. This could bring some breezy to perhaps windy conditions at times. Winds at low to mid levels look to be just short of producing strong winds, so have delayed the High Wind Watch until the next system on Saturday into Sunday. That being said, there could be some gusty winds along the Rocky Mountain Front and high plains Friday afternoon. Dry, breezy, and mild conditions then continue for Friday night into Saturday. Much stronger westerly flow then sets up sometime later Saturday afternoon, continuing through the night, and into Sunday. This looks to bring the potential for widespread strong winds especially Saturday night into Sunday morning. Have adjusted and spread the High Wind Watch to account for this setup. This westerly flow also comes with some moisture, and combine with another clipper system on Sunday. The result could be some mountain snow showers on Sunday, with mainly rain showers across the plains. With breezy to strong downsloping winds, mild temperatures will be found Friday throughout the weekend. Anglin Monday Through Thanksgiving...The Thanksgiving week still looks to be cool and unsettled. Monday sees lingering affects of Sunday's clipper system with unsettled northwest flow and scattered snow showers. A large scale trough pattern then sets up Tuesday through Thursday bringing chances for precipitation and cooler temperatures each day. Current forecasts calls for perhaps widespread winter weather impacts during big holiday travel days on Wednesday and Thursday. As mentioned temperatures look to cool off, especially with any potential snowfall. By the end of the week lows could be in the single digits to teens, with highs in the 20s. There still remains uncertainty in reference to precipitation type, snowfall amounts, as well as precipitation start and stop times for this system next week. Anyone with travel or outdoor plans next week should continue to monitor the forecast.
