...HIGH WIND WARNING IS CANCELLED...

The National Weather Service in Great Falls has cancelled the
High Wind Warning.

While wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph are still possible through the
afternoon hours today, the threat for widespread wind gusts of 60
mph has decreased across the region. For this reason, the High
Wind Warning has been cancelled for Cascade, Judith Basin, and
Fergus Counties. Motorist are encouraged to be prepared for sudden
and gusty cross winds, especially in prone areas.

.SYNOPSIS...

An upper level ridge of High pressure builds across the Northern
Rockies and Montana through Thursday for gradually warmer and
drier conditions. Temperatures will be slowest to warm across
southwest and western Montana Valleys while gusty west to
southwest winds on the plains bring a quicker warmup, but with the
potential for strong winds along the east slopes of the Rockies by
Thursday and Friday.

Most of our forecast through Wednesday morning remains valid.
However, increased cloud cover slightly across the CWA given latest
trends in satellite imagery and model guidance. Also freshened our
hourly temperature forecast and increased low temperatures by up to
several degrees for the north-central MT plains given observed
temperature trends, latest MOS guidance, and the expectation of
abundant cloud cover and persistent downslope winds. Lastly,
freshened POPs to have light snow confined to the Continental Divide
and its immediate lee in the Rocky Mountain Front region. This
adjustment was based on mesoscale model guidance and the
aforementioned downslope winds east of the Divide. Any snow
accumulation in this area will probably be an inch or less through
Wednesday morning.

Northwest flow aloft persists over Montana tonight through late
Wednesday night as upper level ridging remains over the West Coast.
Variable mid- and high-level cloud cover and widespread VFR
conditions expected through the entire forecast period. Exception
will be the mountains along the immediate Continental Divide where
areas of snow and mountain obscurations will persist. Strong and
gusty southwest to west winds continue along the east slopes of the
Rocky Mountains and over the adjacent plains, especially at KCTB and
KGTF terminals. mpj

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 134 PM MST Tue Jan 1 2019/

An upper level ridge continues to work east into the region from
the Pacific NW and Southern BC tonight for a mainly dry northerly
flow aloft. Embedded shortwave and upper level jet energy aloft as
well as some moisture spilling over the top of the ridge will
keep a fair amount of cloudcover over the region with just a small
chance for a flurry or light snow shower along the continental
divide tonight. Overnight temperatures will again be quite cold
over SW MT, but not as cold as last night thanks to the additional
cloud-cover. Strong surface pressure gradient is already in place
across the Rockies and will remain through Wednesday before
strengthening further on Thursday. Breezy to windy conditions on
the plains of north-central MT will keep overnight temperatures
from falling too much tonight and help to boost afternoon
temperatures into the 40s on Wednesday. Lack of wind in the SW MT
valleys will keep cold air in place there with a much slower warm-
up through the next several days. By Thursday, the upper level
ridge becomes suppressed by energy moving into western Canada,
leading to increasingly strong west flow in the mid-upper levels.
This combined with a strengthening pressure gradient across the
Rockies and favorable positioning of a wind speed maximum and
stable layer at or just above ridgetops should support the
redevelopment of strong winds along the Rocky Mtn Front Thursday
which will likely continue into Friday and a High Wind Watch will
be issued to highlight this. Still some uncertainty with the
eastern extent of high winds as the wind maximum moves through on
Friday morning and later shifts will evaluate the need for
expanding the watch. Hoenisch

Thursday Night through Tuesday...Medium range period starts off
with westerly flow aloft over Montana and an energetic upper level
system off the British Columbia coast. This feature moves
eastward through southern Canada as a second trough develops along
the West Coast of the USA Friday through Saturday. This places
Montana between major weather systems with an increasingly moist
southwesterly flow aloft through the weekend. This pattern will
bring precipitation to the mountains of the Continental Divide
while the plains and lower elevation valleys remain mostly dry and
breezy to windy. Strongest winds can be expected Friday through
Friday night as the northern system creates surface low pressure
in Alberta causes downslope pressure gradients to tighten along
the east slopes of the Rockies. Temperatures will cool a few
degrees on Sunday as troughing aloft moves through the region, but
it should be noted that temperatures will still remain above
seasonal normals. Medium range models suggest that Montana will be
underneath either a short wave ridge or an increasingly moist
southwest flow aloft once again as another trough develops on the
West Coast early next week. Either scenario will continue the
trend of above average temperatures with precipitation over the
western mountains and dry and breezy conditions over the plains.
