.SYNOPSIS...

A major winter storm will continue across the Northern Rockies
through the day today, with precipitation slowly coming to an end
from south to north tonight. Near-blizzard conditions are possible
along the Rocky Mountain Front during the day today as winds
strengthen. Widespread tree damage will continue to occur over the
plains of North Central Montana, with additional power outages
possible as the heavy, wet snow weighs down power lines.

.UPDATE...

The morning update has been published. A significant winter storm
is impacting much of the region and will continue to do so
through late tonight. Not much updating was needed this morning but
did blend pops, snowfall, and wind grids with the latest
guidance. The Rocky Mountain Front and the adjacent plains
continue to have the greatest impacts with heavy snow and near
blizzard conditions. The most significant snow accumulation for
today is still expected to occur north and west of the Great Falls
area. The eastern portions of Central/North-central Montana will
not see as much accumulation due to some warm air intrusion, which
will allow the snow to mix with or become rain at times. We will
be keeping a close eye on the southwest as a couple periods of
snow are expected through this evening. There was no change in the
winter weather products in terms of timing but did raise the snow
totals in the southwest by an inch or two in some spots.

A strong winter storm will continue to impact the Northern Rockies
throughout the duration of the 2912/3012 TAF period. Moderate to at
times heavy snow will produce LIFR/IFR conditions over North Central
Montana (including the KCTB, KHVR, KGTF, KLWT, and KHLN terminals)
throughout the day today and into portions of the overnight hours.
Snow accumulations may reach or exceed 1 to 3 inches/hour for
several hours along and northwest of a KHLN, to KGTF, to KHVR line.
To the south over Southwest Montana (including the KBZN, KEKS, KWYS
terminals), IFR/MVFR/VFR conditions are expected, with precipitation
generally decreasing in areal coverage by the evening hours tonight.
Strong and gusty north to northeast winds will cause areas of
blowing snow at times through the afternoon hours today, but become
more northwesterly or even westerly later in the period as the low
pressure system begins to move away from the area. Mountains

/ISSUED 326 AM MDT Sun Sep 29 2019/

Today through Monday night...primary forecast concerns are winds and
continued snow today/tonight, and then the potential for record low
temperatures Monday night.

H500 closed low, which was embedded within a broad and deep trough
across the Western CONUS, was nearly stationary over the Columbia
River Valley of Northern Oregon/Southern Washington early this
morning. Further to the south of the aforementioned H500 low, height
falls were spreading northeast from the ejecting trough axis across
the Great Basin. These height fall will continue to quickly spread
northeast over the Central Rockies by the mid-morning hours today
and over Northeast Montana by midnight tonight. Very impressive
upper level divergence and ascent will move from south to north
across the Northern Rockies this morning and through the day as the
trough axis ejects out of the Great Basin, which combined with the
continued low to mid-level east-to-northeast upslope flow and
Pacific moisture being advected into the region will lead to another
period of moderate-to-heavy precipitation (especially over the
plains of North Central Montana and along the Rocky Mountain Front).
While a bulk of the precipitation will fall as snow over this
period, a nose of mid-level warm air advecting in across far eastern
portions of the CWA (along and east of a Lewistown to Havre line)
may lead to period of a rain/snow or sleet mix, which will cut down
on snowfall amounts. Strong lift focused within a saturated
dendritic growth zone this morning through this afternoon will lead
to a period of impressive snowfall rates northwest of a Great Falls
to Havre line, which could lead to hourly snowfall rates of 1" to
possibly 2". In addition to high snowfall rates, breezy to strong
northerly winds (especially along and west of the United States
Highway 87 corridor) will lead to patchy or areas of blowing snow.
Areas along and northwest of a Heart Butte, to Cut Bank, to Sweet
Grass line could even approach near-blizzard conditions into the
afternoon hours today; but given uncertainty (of 3hrs of 1/4 mile
visibility or less) and the extreme snowfall amounts that have
already fallen (conditions are already bad) I have decided to hold
off on issuing any Blizzard Warnings. We will continue to monitor
observations over this area though in case Blizzard conditions
develop or become more widespread than expected.

Precipitation will gradually come to an end from south to north
during the overnight hours tonight, with the one exception being
along the Hi-Line/Rocky Mountain Front, where additional snowfall
will only exacerbate snowfall totals (which will likely break
September records). By Monday morning, the closed low responsible
for the winter punch across the Northern Rockies will begin to
drift northeast across North Central Montana and into Southern
Saskatchewan. This will help to maintain well below normal
temperatures across the entire region, with most locations only
rising into the 30s. Additional light snow is possible during the
day on Monday, but the bulk of the accumulating snow will have
come to an end. For this reason, will allow all the current
highlights to end at their respective times. While broad troughing
resulting in some cloud cover will remain over the region Monday
night, the fresh snow pack and surface high pressure building in
from Canada will allow temperature to plummet into the teens at
most locations Monday night/Tuesday morning. Record low
temperatures will be in jeopardy of falling over this timeframe, most
notably at Cut Bank, Havre, Great Falls, and Lewistown. - Moldan

Tuesday through Sunday...A few snow showers are possible at times
Tuesday as weak shortwave energy moves through the upper trough.
A chilly airmass remains in place across the region through at
least the first half of next week with unseasonably cool daytime
temperatures and a high likelihood of record cold overnight low
temperatures Tuesday night. With many locations expected to see
overnight minimum temperatures in the teens and twenties this may
pose a threat to non-winterized outdoor plumbing/irrigation
systems. Coldest temperatures are likely to occur across western
portions of north-central MT, where a significant snow pack is
anticipated to be in place. A brief period of ridging aloft looks
to shift across the region late Wednesday through Thursday night,
allow temperatures to recover to within 10 degrees of seasonal
averages, but still on the cool side. the next Pacific trough
moves onto the west coast by Friday and will bring a chance of
precipitation and cooling temperatures for the end of the week
