A fast moving cold front will move through the region today,
producing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Colder air
moves into the region tonight, as a second cold front moves south
into the region. Expect widespread snow on Sunday over North Central
MT, along with strong winds, creating blizzard conditions. It
remains colder than normal for the first half of next week, along
with scattered rain and snow showers continuing as well.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms continue to move through
the region this evening. Overall forecast is on track but have
updated PoPs, QPF, and weather using observations and latest short
term model consensus tools. Have also made some minor tweaks to
other forecast elements, mainly to tweak borders with neighboring

Scattered showers will move through the region before 15z today.
Then a strong cold front moves from northwest to southeast through
the area starting early this afternoon. Expect strong winds/showers

move southward into the region after 06z Sunday, producing blizzard
conditions over North Central MT during the day on Sunday.

.HYDROLOGY...

Several fairly strong spring storm systems will move through the
region from today through Sunday. However, since colder air will be
moving into the region, a good portion of the precipitation,
especially at higher elevations, will fall in form of snow. With
several rivers across Central MT currently high, those rivers will
likely remain high over the next several days. At this time, no
rivers are forecasted to go into flood stage. However, should a bit
more rain fall than snow, the situation could change. Thus continue
to monitor later forecasts and updates on these upcoming spring

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 545 PM MDT Fri Apr 26 2019/

Tonight through Sunday...primary forecast concern continues to be
impacts from a potent spring storm, which will bring falling
temperatures, strong winds, and precipitation to the region
(especially from Saturday night through Sunday). While snowfall
amounts over the plains of generally 1-4" are expected from Saturday
night/Sunday morning through Sunday afternoon, wind gusts of 50
to 60 mph could lead to a 3-6hr window of whiteout/near whiteout
conditions. For this reason, have expanded the Winter Storm Watch
to cover all of North Central Montana, as well as adding the
"Blizzard Conditions Possible" tag to the Winter Storm Watch. As
is the case with any fall/spring storm, accumulating snow outside
of grassy/elevated surfaces will be highly dependent on snow
rates, temperatures, and the depth of the cloud layer (to block
out the sun). With regards to this upcoming spring storm, strong
orographic lift (in north/east facing slopes)/synoptic
forcing/frontogenetical lift should all promote a period of
enhanced snowfall rates Saturday night through Sunday, with hourly
accumulations of 0.5 to 1" being possible. Those areas that see
these rates (at this time it appears to be in the mountains and
areas along and west of a Great Falls to Sweet Grass line),
especially during the overnight and morning hours (when melting
due to solar radiation is at its lowest), will have the best
opportunity for snow accumulations on road surface that would lead
to impacts on travel. Strong lift within a saturated and fairly
deep DGZ zone will also support decent snow ratios, which can
sometimes be to low given climatology for this time of year. As
the cold front barrels south/southeast across the region late
Saturday and through Sunday morning, temperatures are expected to
rapidly fall. Highs on Sunday will be well below normal and likely
reached during the early morning hours, with most daylight
readings being in the 20s to low 30s. Finally, BUFKIT soundings
across the region are depicting a deep cloud layer during the day
on Sunday, which should help to limit the amount of solar
radiation from reaching and warming the surface. Another aspect
not to be overlooked with the timing of this storm and recent warm
weather is the impacts to vegetation, most notably trees that
have begun to bud/leaf out. Given the heavy and wet nature of the
expected snow combined with the forecasted winds, tree or branch
damage is entirely possible. - Moldan

Sunday night through Wednesday...Our region remains beneath cyclonic
flow aloft as an unusually-strong longwave trough and embedded
shortwave disturbances continue to affect our CWA. Lingering snow
associated with this weekend's storm system should exit to the east
Sunday evening with any additional snow accumulations of an inch or
less. Afterward, isolated to scattered showers are expected Monday
through Wednesday, with the greater potential for these during the
late morning through early evening hours, when daytime heating
combined with rather cold air aloft yield some weak instability.
Rain and/or snow affect the plains and valleys, while our mountains
should deal with snow. Despite a gradual warming trend, temperatures
remain below-normal during this period.

Thursday through next Friday...Flow aloft becomes more zonal as
alternating shortwave ridges and troughs follow the aforementioned
longwave trough projected to exit to our east. In addition,
southerly to westerly Chinook surface winds should become more
prevalent across the CWA, allowing POPs to wane, especially over the
plains and valleys. Temperatures continue to moderate and should be
near-normal by Friday.
