.A potent spring storm will settle into the western Great Basin
this morning, then take aim on Utah this afternoon through 
Thursday morning. A strong cold front will lead this storm into 
northwest Utah this afternoon, then sweep east across the state 
tonight through tomorrow. Intense snow showers along with a few 
thunderstorms will develop along the frontal boundary, followed by
a prolonged period of steady snow across northern and central 
Utah's mountains and adjacent valleys. The heaviest snows are 
expected across the central and southern Wasatch Mountains and the
central Utah mountains.

.DISCUSSION...Low amplitude ridging in place per latest H5
analysis will continue to flatten and shift downstream today
allowing an increasingly mild southwesterly flow aloft to spread
over the area. Upstream the trough noted off the Pacific coast is
the feature of focus moving forward, as it will only become more
organized and impressive as it moves into the area tomorrow.
Previous forecast stands pat as no updates were needed this
morning. Focus of shift moving forward will key in on the Tuesday
through Thursday timeframe with trough approach/passage.

Wind/Winter Storm watches in place look more than solid, and
expect to both upgrade and add portions of the area to going suite
of headlines moving forward. Curious to see the full suite of 12z
guidance, as deterministic runs of the GFS continue to key in on
strong cyclogenesis and attendant frontogenesis overhead tomorrow,
with notable pressure falls from 1006mb to 990mb along the
surface pressure trough within a 12 hour window (from 12z Tuesday
through 00z Wednesday). A near full gamut of potential impacts
exist with this trough...pre/post frontal winds, Convection along
the frontal boundary, heavy mountain snow post fropa, significant
valley rainfall for a period, and an increasing potential for
accumulating snow along much of the I-15 corridor Wed into
Thursday (including portions of the Wasatch Front).

To summarize in a nutshell...meteorologically speaking this
trough is shaping up to be synoptically beautiful. Sensibly, it
will be a good reminder that winter weather isn't over yet, and
spring in the eastern great basin is more like a roller coaster
than a cruise.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...The upstream trough will move into the Great
Basin tomorrow. Moisture will continue to increase over Utah
ahead of it, with PWATs across northwest Utah reaching 0.5-0.75
inches by late tomorrow morning. The associated cold front will
enter northwest Utah by late morning, then strengthen as a 120kt
jet punches into central Utah, its left exit region coinciding
with the position of the cold front. Strong frontogenetic forcing
and associated ascent along the boundary as it starts to head into
central Utah will lead to a period of intense precipitation
tomorrow afternoon and evening. A brief break in precipitation
will be possible following the frontal band before precipitation
fills in again late tomorrow night with the arrival of trough
axis, then continue along favored upslope regions as a moist
northwest flow settles over the area into Thursday.

Snow levels will be tricky as 700mb temperatures remain relatively
mild immediately behind the front. However, given the expected
intensity of precipitation within the frontal band, brief lowering
of snow levels to the higher valleys and benches would not be
surprising. Colder air supporting snow to the 4-5kft range will be
more likely by early Wednesday morning closer to the trough axis.
Snow levels and air and road/soil temperatures make valley snow
totals tricky, but higher valleys such as the Wasatch Mountain
Valleys and southwest Wyoming should see accumulating snow. Higher
passes along I-15 could also see impacts to travel at times.
Mountains will likely see significant amounts, especially northwest-
facing slopes given the strong cold front, available moisture, and
favorable orographics. Another wild card will be lake-effect snow.
Given recent warmth driving up lake temperatures and -8 to -9C 700mb
temperatures with the trough, steep lapse rates will ensue. Winds
could end up being a bit too strong tomorrow night to get organized
convection going off the GSL, but lighter winds Wednesday night may
offer a better chance. For now, have left the existing Winter Storm
Watch in place for the northern and central mountains and Wasatch
Mountain Valleys.

Besides the precipitation, another area of concern with this storm
will be the winds. With rapid pressure falls along a deepening
surface low just east of PUC, prefrontal southwest winds are
expected to become strong across the southern through east-central
Utah valleys tomorrow afternoon through evening. In addition,
postfrontal winds are also expected to be strong in favored
downslope areas such as the northwest deserts and likely the eastern
valleys late tomorrow through Wednesday. Have hoisted a High Wind
Watch to align with this thinking.

Quickly developing behind the departing trough feature, is yet
another active trough pattern as we start into Friday and move
into the weekend. As previous shifts have mentioned, the run to
run and model to model consistency for the extended period remains
inconsistent. However, the most recent and previous model runs of
the ensembles do have a decently aligned solution. This said,
kept the extended forecast pretty much in tact with no big changes
in place.

A deepening trough carves into the Great Basin Friday and quickly
dives south; how far south and how much the airmass cools is still
the question. Snow levels will drop and could even produce snow to
the valley floors for a brief period Friday evening into early
Saturday. Again, details are still unclear how this will play out,
but right now the pattern remains active, unsettled and wet. Daytime
temperatures should cool a bit from this, however if snow does
develop, with the warm airmass in place and brief convective nature
of the storm system, not expecting much in the way of accumulation
from this trough. Will continue to evaluate operational and ensemble
model forecasts.

A strong and cold storm system Tuesday into Wednesday is expected
to produce significant accumulating mountain snow across northern

Strong gusty winds are also possible Tuesday afternoon across
southern through east-central Utah, and across the northwest
deserts and eastern valleys Tuesday evening into Wednesday.
