...A STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL IMPACT THE AREA THURSDAY THROUGH
FRIDAY...

.A strong storm system will impact the area beginning with
mountain snow and valley rain along with gusty winds on Thursday.
Significant snowfall is expected across all mountains through
Friday afternoon with this storm, with the greatest amounts
across the northern mountains. Snow levels will begin to lower
following the passage of a cold front late Thursday and reach the
valley floors by Friday morning.

.SYNOPSIS...A series of weather systems will impact the area
through Wednesday, with a more potent system expected Thursday
through Friday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...In the near term will be continuing to focus on the
latest short wave trough that is currently lifting northeast
across far northern Utah. A winter weather advisory remains in
effect for the northern Wasatch Front and Cache valleys where
widespread light to moderate snow persists, and road impacts
remain at the time of this writing. A subtle mid level axis
currently passing over the northern Wasatch and convergence of rather
deep moisture (with focus near H7) provided the spark to drive
modest rates and the associated road accums. Moving forward
through early afternoon this axis will shift downstream and drag
the forcing with it, this allowing a rather quick downturn in both
areal extent and significance of additional snowfall around
midday. Anticipating the going advisory will be allowed to drop
as scheduled. Earlier updates trended PoPs down vs. previous
forecast for this afternoon within the forthcoming subsident
environment to match this thinking.

Focus of the shift thereafter will turn to a more significant
short wave trough which will impact the local area tomorrow into
Friday. Quite energetic on its own, interaction of this wave
coupled with a favorable land falling atmospheric river will drive
widespread and locally heavy mtn snow/valley rain through
Thursday evening (focus north), and a period of valley snowfall
for areas favored in moist/unstable northwesterly flow. Awaiting
the full suite of 12z guidance and will provide additional detail
in the afternoon package, while addressing any need of headline
upgrades etc.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...The models remain in good agreement bringing
a moist and energetic storm system through the region for the
latter portion of the week. This system will bring a substantial
tap of subtropical moisture resulting in a favorable window for
precipitation ahead of the trough within southwesterly flow areas,
with the baroclinic zone crossing the area late Thursday
afternoon. Given the source region of the pre-frontal airmass and
expected mixing, should see valley rain/mountain snow Thursday
with snow levels rising to near or above 7000 feet during the day
Thursday. In the wake of this wave, a favorable orographic regime
will maintain significant snowfall across the higher terrain
Thursday night into Friday, focused particularly on the central
Wasatch and other areas favored in a moist and unstable northwest
flow. Eventually mid level heights will begin to rebound during
the day Friday bringing an end to the precipitation.

Weak, short-duration ridging Sunday will weaken by the end of
Sunday as another trough feature slides through Idaho and Nevada
into Utah. Models seem to have come into better agreement compared
to 24-hours ago with the Monday storm. The trough becomes
negatively tilted as it swings into Utah early Monday. Warm
advection ahead of the trough will quickly switch to cold
advection with a northwest flow Monday morning, as temperatures
behind the baroclinc zone cool somewhat rapidly. Sufficient
moisture should allow for Valleys to pick up some accumulations as
well as another well performing mountain snow event.

Beyond the Monday storm system, models are not completely out of
timing with one another through the remainder of the week resulting
in an active pattern to continue. With brief, weak ridging by
midweek conditions do not look favorable to see warm advection for
any real length of time so the threat of inversion should be low.

.AVIATION...Occasional snow showers will cross the terminal through
the evening and overnight hours. IFR conditions can be expected
periodically...especially associated with snow showers.  Winds are
expected to be light...becoming more southerly after 09-11Z. Up to 1
inch of accumulation is expected on untreated surfaces through
Wednesday morning.

Snow will continue across northern Utah this morning, which will
impact the morning commute primarily across the northern Wasatch
Front and Cache Valley. Snow will likely linger over the northern
Utah mountains into the afternoon before tapering off.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

A stronger and colder storm system approaching from the west will
impact much of the outlook area Thursday night through Friday.
Widespread precipitation will produce significant accumulations
over the northern and central Utah mountains. In the valleys,
precipitation is expected to begin as rain before changing to snow
Thursday night or Friday morning. Heavier precipitation will work
into the southern mountains by Friday, with many locations also
receiving significant accumulations.
