.UPDATE...
The forecast remains largley on track this morning. A bit of
light freezing rain developed across the Salt Lake Valley earlier
this morning ahead of the onset of heavier precipitation rates.
Despite air temepratures mainly in the mid 30s, ground
temperatures have remained below freezing allowing patchy black
ice development on untreated surfaces. However, conditions
increasing synoptic forcing late this morning is now increasing
precipitation intensity and forcing p-type over to all snow from
dyanmical cooling. The Cache Valley and northern Wasatch front
will see snow taper off through midday, while the Salt Lake City
area will see the heaviest snow between now and early afternoon.
&&
.SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough will continue to bring widespread
precipitation to the area through the day. A trailing weather
disturbances will impact mainly the northern half of the forecast
area tonight through Monday.
&&
.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 00Z THURSDAY)...An upper trough with its axis
currently over Nevada will continue to make its way across the Great
Basin today. Ahead of this trough, a plume of subtropical moisture
had earlier spread into Utah. Precipitation became widespread this
evening under this moisture plume along with a bit of low-level warm
advection while temperatures cooled aloft. However, the heavier
precipitation has now started to shift east of the area. As the
trough axis crosses the area later this morning, expect
precipitation to fill in once again from the west.
The heaviest precipitation has occurred in areas favored in
southwesterly flow, such as the northern Wasatch, valleys from Ogden
northward, and upslope areas of southern Utah. Except in Dixie,
precipitation type in these areas have mostly been snow. Across the
Salt Lake Valley, lower portions which did not mix earlier this
evening saw small pockets of freezing rain. However, with the warm
layer expected to have cooled and the airmass mixing farther down
(evidenced by the above freezing temperatures now at KSLC),
precipitation type has now trended more towards rain. May have to
wait until closer to the trough axis when temperatures aloft cool
more before this area, as well as other northern/central valleys
which have warmed, to transition to snow.
Precipitation will wind down by the late afternoon or early evening
timeframe as the trough exits the area. However, the break in
precipitation will be brief as the next upstream trough will quickly
approach Utah. Southwest winds will increase across the area
tonight, with warm advection developing especially across northern
Utah. This warm advection will bring another round of significant
snow to the northern mountains and northern valleys favored in
southwest flow. The trough will graze northern Utah tomorrow
morning, keeping snow ongoing across the north. Another round of
warm advection will then develop for the midafternoon through
evening hours. At times during this event, snow levels may rise
above valley floors, especially south of Ogden. Best chances of this
occurring would be early tomorrow morning and again late tomorrow
afternoon.
As far as winter weather highlights, have earlier expanded the
advisory to include south-central Utah and Castle Country. Also,
decided to extend the advisory for the northern mountains through
tomorrow to include the next event, since the break in precipitation
will only be 6-8 hours. Some northern valleys will probably need new
or extended highlights for the next event as well, but will leave
that decision to the day shift.
As precipitation winds down tomorrow night, a progressive shortwave
ridge will build into and then quickly shift east of the area on
Tuesday ahead of a trough moving onto the West Coast. However, this
trough will weaken significantly as it ejects across the Pacific
Northwest on Wednesday. Southwesterly flow over Utah will keep
inversions from developing/strengthening, so afternoon max
temperatures in the valleys should trend above climo for a change
both Tuesday and Wednesday.
.LONG TERM (After 00Z Thursday)...A few showers will be possible for
the higher terrain of northern Utah Wednesday night into Thursday as
a weak storm system grazes the area. Behind it, global models
indicate a brief return of high pressure on Friday before it shifts
east in response to a Pacific storm system moving onshore.
EC/GFS both move this system through Utah and southwest Wyoming
during the day Saturday, but the feature is considerably weaker in
the GFS, where associated precipitation is spotty at best, compared
to the EC which shows some decent accumulations, at least for
southern Utah. Given the uncertainty, have kept POPs in the slight
chance/chance range for now. Regardless, the arrival of the system
will at least act to limit the development of valley inversions and
keep temperatures near seasonal normals.

.AVIATION...
At the SLC terminal, LIFR conditions are expected to prevail
through 19Z then improve to IFR through 20-21Z and to MVFR through
23Z. There is a 30% chance that IFR and MVFR conditions improve
an hour earlier than current forecast. Winds are expected to shift
from northwest to southeast after 21Z but could hold off until
00-01Z.
