Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 949 PM MDT Mon Mar 11 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A slow moving storm system passing across the Desert Southwest will bring precipitation to far southern Utah through Tuesday. A cold pacific trough is expected to cross the area midweek with accumulating snow to the valley floors. High pressure will build in after that bringing a more prolonged stretch of dry and mild weather. && .DISCUSSION...An upper low is currently centered off the northern Baja coast and is expected to track east across Arizona tomorrow. Meanwhile, a moist southerly flow at 500mb (southeast at 700mb) is in place across southern Utah, with warm advection continuing at 700mb across southern Utah. A weak embedded disturbance is lifting into southern Utah this evening, and this coupled with upper diffluence ahead of the low will result in increasing chances of precipitation across southern Utah through the night, with mountain snow and generally valley rain. Precipitation will tend to diminish west to east during the day tomorrow as the low continues its eastward progression. The southern mountains will see just minor accumulations of snow through tomorrow since the bulk of the precipitation will remain over Arizona closer to the low. Greater attention will be afforded the next trough which is currently evident over the British Columbia coast and will dive into the area tomorrow night through Wednesday night. Expect precipitation to fill in behind a cold front, with snow levels falling to the valley floors by late tomorrow night or Wednesday morning. Lapse rates will steepen through the day Wednesday leading to favorable orographics for northwest-facing slopes. In addition, the airmass may be cold enough to lead to lake-effect snow late Wednesday. Made minor updates to the forecast for the rest of the night mainly to increase PoPs slightly across the south and to make adjustments to sky cover based on latest observational trends. && .AVIATION...Operational weather concerns will remain minimal at the KSLC terminal through the valid TAF period.
