Area forecast discussion, Jul 11, 9:40 AM PDT, 3 hours 46 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 940 AM PDT Thu Jul 11 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure aloft will bring hot weather through early next week. The exceptions will be areas near the coast and the higher elevations of the mountains. An influx of monsoon moisture may trigger an isolated afternoon thunderstorm over the mountains Friday and Saturday. The marine layer will become shallower with night and morning coastal low clouds extending inland only to the far western valleys at times. The ridge breaks down the middle of next week and temperatures will return to their seasonal summer averages. && .DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... A period of hot weather is forthcoming Friday through Monday as a quasi-stationary 595 dm high settles over the AZ/NM border. The heat will be focused over the deserts, mountains and inland valleys where temps will be 5-10 degrees above average. Closer to the coast the temperatures will be moderated by the marine layer that will remain more or less intact through the period. Max temperatures in the lower deserts on Wednesday were 110-113. Today will be even hotter as the 850 mb temps increase from 26.5 yesterday to 29.3 today, which equates to a 112-113 surface high. PSP and TRM were already running 3-4 degree warmer than yesterday this morning, and are on pace to reach 112-115 this afternoon. The airmass warms further on Friday, then remains near those levels Saturday through Monday, so the heat will continue through early next week. The X-factor to just how hot it will get may be the amount of debris clouds that filter in from the southeast. Water vapor imagery this morning shows a well defined shortwave moving into the Lower Colorado River Valley. The 00Z ECMWF initialized this feature quite well, and tracks it north into southern Nevada tonight. A series of weaker shortwaves track over the same area Friday and Saturday with a swath of mid and high clouds grazing our mountain and desert zones. A thicker cloud layer would limit solar insolation, a thinner cloud layer would result in greater heating. The western edge of the monsoonal moisture will reach the mountains Friday and Saturday, perhaps with enough instability for an isolated thunderstorm each afternoon. Sections of the Inland Empire could be near Heat Advisory levels Friday through Monday with high temperatures in the upper 90s to around 105. High temperatures in the lower deserts will be around 113 to 118, ultimately depending on the high clouds coverage and any surface based moisture intrusion from the southeast. The ECMWF favors a drier, warmer solutions, while the GFS is not as hot due to more clouds and an influx of low level moisture. The marine layer depth will reach the western valleys each night where areas of dense fog are likely from late night through mid morning. The ridge weakens and is forced eastward the middle of next week as a longwave trough moves past to the north. It won't be quite as hot next Tuesday-Thursday, but still near average which is still quite warm for mid July. && .FIRE WEATHER... High pressure will bring warming into Friday with the peak of the heat for Friday through Monday with high temperatures in the Inland Empire in the upper 90s to around 105 and in the lower deserts of 112 to 118. The more significant monsoonal moisture for Friday through Sunday will be mostly along and east of the lower Colorado River into Arizona. More limited moisture may extend westward across the lower deserts to the mountains at times with some afternoon clouds near the mountains. There remain small chances to get a few showers or thunderstorms in the mountains for Friday and Saturday afternoons. Moisture is quite limited and any thunderstorms are more likely to produce a few dry lightning strikes than any significant rainfall. && .AVIATION... 101530Z...Coast/Valleys...Low clouds with bases 600-900 feet MSL with tops to 1500 feet and vis 3-5SM will clear this morning by 17Z. Some vis on higher coastal terrain below 3SM. Mostly clear skies until coastal clouds redevelop around 04-06Z and move ashore overnight. Won't reach very far inland early Friday, probably a little less than this morning, along with reductions in vis. Clear out Friday by 16-17Z. Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear with unrestricted vis today, with a few clouds AOA 10000 feet late today into early Friday. && .MARINE... No hazardous marine weather expected through Monday. && .SKYWARN... Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions. && .SGX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... CA...NONE. PZ...NONE. && PUBLIC...Moede AVIATION/MARINE...MM
