.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 133 AM CST Thu Jan 10 2019

A surface ridge axis will slowly move east of the region today
with surface winds becoming light southeasterly. High
temperatures are a tough call today with plenty of high clouds
upstream. We have generally gone with a model consensus over most
areas with highs ranging from the lower 40s in central Missouri to
the upper 40s over far southwestern Missouri.

Upper level energy will then reach the Four Corners region by late
tonight with upper level diffluence beginning to overspread
eastern Kansas and far western Missouri by sunrise. A low level
jet and isentropic upglide will also develop late tonight over
this same area. We may therefore see some light precipitation
develop late tonight generally along and west of the U.S. 65
corridor. We have kept PoPs in the 20-30% range for now as model
soundings indicate a very dry air mass will initially be present
in the lower atmosphere.

If precipitation does overcome that dry layer, we are looking at
primarily rain west of U.S. 65 with temperatures in the middle to
upper 30s. A rain/snow mix is expected for any precipitation that
does manage to get east of U.S. 65 as temperatures would be in the
lower to middle 30s. It is highly likely that there would be some
sleet at onset due to wet-bulbing. At this time, we are not
expecting any snow/sleet accumulation before 12Z.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

That upper level trough will then track due east towards the
Ozarks from Friday into Saturday. The exact track still remains in
question as northern stream short wave energy will also drop
almost due south across the northern and central High Plains
along the eastern periphery of a developing blocking high over the
northern Rockies. One immediate point to get out there is that the
presence of multiple short waves, associated jet streaks, and
possible phasing usually results in model struggles. Thus,
expectations will likely change!

As that main wave comes out from the Four Corners region,
isentropic upglide over a fairly deep layer (290-305K) will result
in a large area of precipitation overspreading the region from
west to east. While that low level dry layer may slow down
precipitation onset by a few hours, the deep extent of the upglide
along with diffluent flow aloft gives us high confidence that
precipitation will make steady progress east throughout the day.

Precipitation type remains a huge question with this system.
Initial wet-bulbing (the lower atmosphere becoming saturated)
should knock temperatures down at precipitation onset. We do not
expect too much warming throughout the day with the presence of
thick cloud cover and precipitation. However, warm air advection
will continue above the surface, especially over southeastern
Kansas and southwestern Missouri.

The strength and location of a developing warm nose will play a
big role in precipitation type. While global models are not too
bullish with the warm nose at this time, it is quite likely that
it becomes a bigger player given the expected strength of the low
level jet. With that being said, we do believe there is some
potential for freezing rain and a very thin glaze of ice roughly
along and southeast of a Cassville to Willard to Conway to
Eminence line.

Accumulating snow also looks increasingly likely from Friday
afternoon into Saturday across much of the Missouri Ozarks. Areas
from Truman Lake to the Springfield metro to Table Rock Lake may
very well be the dividing line between a wintry mix and heavier
snow. Areas to the west towards I-49 may mainly see rain until a
changeover to snow occurs as the system begins to exit the region
later Saturday.

It should be noted that snow to liquid ratios may be held down
during the daylight hours and that initial ground temperatures
above freezing will likely play a role in storm total snow
accumulations. One "game changer" would be the presence of upper
level jet streak interaction and the development of deep
tropospheric ascent. That would result in heavier precipitation
rates and dynamical vertical cooling leading to a period of heavy
snow. At this time, models are all over the place with jet streak
placement. This will be something to hone in on with future model
runs.

At this time, we are looking at the potential for 4-7" amounts
from the Lake of the Ozarks region down towards Salem. It is
possible that a swath of even higher amounts could occur somewhere
across central or eastern Missouri if the jet streak interaction
occurs. After collaboration with surrounding offices, we have
elected to hoist a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake of the Ozarks
and eastern Ozarks regions.

Expected amounts then drop off the farther west and south you go.
We currently have a swath of 2-4" amounts from the Truman Lake
region down towards Springfield and into the Bull Shoals Lake
area. It is highly likely that we will depict a much sharper
accumulation gradient somewhere in this corridor once the strength
and location that warm nose is known. As is typically the case
around here, terrain may also come into play. A Winter Weather
Advisory will likely eventually be required for most of this
corridor. Farther to the west, snow amounts are expected to range
from a trace to maybe an inch from the Joplin area down towards
Anderson.

Once this system gets by the region, weather conditions look
pretty quiet from Sunday through next Thursday as the upper level
flow becomes more zonal. Highs next week look above normal. Thus,
snow that falls will likely not stick around too long.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)

For the 18z TAFS...Ceilings will gradually low from onset of 18z
TAFS through the period with the approach of the next storm
system. Will gradually see enough saturation for some
precipitation to make it to the surface as we head into early
Friday morning and may be a mix of precipitation at the onset due
to wet bulbing effects. Expecting to be predominantly a cold rain
for this set of TAFS which go through 18z Fri based on current
forecast thermal profiles, with VFR conditions dropping into MVFR
conditions.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of the Missouri
Ozarks and extreme southeast Kansas.

Snow accumulations will occur over portions of extreme southeast
Kansas and the Missouri Ozarks Friday through Saturday. The
heaviest accumulations will occur up across central Missouri,
where four to six inches will be possible along and northeast of a
line from Lake of the Ozarks to Salem.

Lighter amounts are expected elsewhere.

There is also a small risk for glaze of ice to occur on elevated
objects.
