.SYNOPSIS...Winter-like pattern will remain in place for the foreseeable
future as a long wave trough dominates the synoptic pattern.
Several opportunities for winter weather are likely this upcoming
week, beginning tomorrow with a quick round of accumulating snow
and another, potentially stronger, system moving through Monday
and Tuesday. Another round of winter weather will be monitored
late in the week. The system on Monday and Tuesday and the one
later in the week have the potential to move inland a little
further north which would increase the low level onshore flow
and the potential for the precipitation type to be in the form of
rain especially over the southern portion of the area.

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH MONDAY/...Satellite imagery shows skies
have cleared for the most part over the northern portion of the
area with the clear as far south as Thurston county at 9 pm/05z.
The Bellingham to Williams Lake gradient, which peaked around -26
mb this morning, is now -17 mb. Winds are slowly easing over the
Northwest Interior but sustained wind speeds are still in the 30s
over Whatcom county with gusts around 50 mph. Temperatures are
already below freezing, in the 20s for the most part with Chehalis
reporting 30 degrees.
Clearing trend will continue tonight with Western Washington in
between systems. The combination of clear skies, weakening winds,
and snow on the ground will result in cold overnight temperatures.
Expect most places to be in the teens to lower 20s by Sunday
morning. With a low of 16 at Sea-tac Sunday will be the coldest
morning since November 24th 2010 and the coldest February morning
in 30 years ( 14 degrees February 5th, 1989 ). Winds in the
Northwest Interior will continue to ease wit hthe high wind
warning ending at 4 am.
So the big question for Sunday is where does the surface low end
up moving inland over Western Washington. The models are in pretty
good agreement that the surface low will move inland along the
North Coast with the low moving through the Puget Sound area
Sunday evening. This track will keep the air mass cool enough over
all but maybe the central Coast for the precipitation with the
system to be in the form of snow. This is especially true with the
cold air already in place over the area. Increasing clouds out
ahead of the system in the morning with the clouds thickening in
the afternoon will make it hard for daytime highs to recover much
above freezing after the very cold start to the morning. With the
lack of onshore flow and a touch of offshore flow as the system
approaches the air mass will remain dry over the area with dew
points at best in the 20s. This means even if the temperatures
creep above freezing in the afternoon with the onset of the
precipitation temperatures will quickly fall back to freezing
keeping the precipitation type as snow. Unlike the previous two
systems this one is embedded in the northwesterly flow aloft and
does not have a cold trough digging behind it. This will help the
system move through the area rather "quickly" versus the last two
systems. Expect the onset of snow in the mid to late afternoon
hours with snow in the evening coming to and end in the early
morning hours on Monday. Current forecast of 1 to 3 inch
accumulations across the area still looks good.
Next system right on heels on the one Sunday evening. Once again
the surface low track will play a big part in the precipitation
type over the area. 00z GFS run has shifted the surface low a
little further north which opens the door up to a little onshore
flow over the southern portion of the area for a possible wintry
mix of precipitation for the Southwest Interior. The NAM still
has the low track far enough south for the precipitation type to
once again be all snow over the area. This system is also slower
moving than the one for Sunday night and has a little more
moisture associated with it. If the surface low does not get north
of the area, and it currently looks like it will not, Western
Washington will be in for another round of significant snowfall
Monday night into Tuesday ( 3 to 6 inches with the potential for
more ). A winter storm watch is in effect for the combination of
the two upcoming systems. Will stay with this idea this evening.

wintry, Thursday into Friday. Moisture could then linger through
the weekend. Still no real promising sign of a pattern change in

Monday morning with ceilings lowering down to near 3000 feet
with the onset of the snow late Sunday afternoon. Conditions
lowering Sunday evening with ceilings lowering down to the
1000-2000 foot range and visibilities 2 to 4 sm in light snow.
The snow will come to an end early Monday morning.
KSEA...Clear skies overnight with increasing mid level clouds
Monday morning. Current timing has the snow beginning at the
terminal at 4 pm Sunday afternoon with the snow continuing into
the early morning hours on Monday. Ceilings lowering down to near
1500 feet with visibility dropping to 2 to 4 sm in light snow.
Expect 1 to 3 inches of new snow. Northeast winds 6 to 10 knots

strong Fraser river outflow. Winds will gradually ease late
tonight into Sunday morning.
A pair of systems will affect the waters late Sunday through
Tuesday. Gusty Fraser river outflow winds will occur again,
