...Threat for Winter Precipitation Diminishes Today...

.A winter storm was moving across the region this morning as cold
air moved southwest along the east side of the Appalachians from
an area of high pressure across the northeastern U.S. Between 
late Sunday evening and early this morning, several inches of snow
fell across areas along and west of the Blue Ridge and mainly 
north of U.S. 460. This area of heavy snow and sleet that moved 
across the region earlier this morning was shifting north of I-64 
and will continue to do so this morning. However, pockets of light
freezing rain and freezing drizzle will linger across the region 
through the morning and into the afternoon in northern areas until
temperatures slowly creep above freezing.

While additional accumulations of snow and sleet are expected to
be minor, ice accumulations from freezing rain and freezing
drizzle will remain possible through the morning in the south and
well into the afternoon across the north until temperatures
finally rise above freezing.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will track from near the mouth of the Mississippi River
Tuesday morning to across the Carolinas by Thursday morning.
Moisture associated with this system will bring a swath of
significant wintry weather to the area Tuesday night into Wednesday
evening. Our weather pattern will remain on the wet side for the
remainder of the week into the weekend as a series of fronts and low
pressure systems track through the region.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 200 PM EST Monday....

A cold front was situated along the coast of the U.S. from northern
Florida to just east of the Carolinas. A broad area of high pressure
was centered over southern Manitoba, and extended south into the
Central Plains states. A lobe of this high extended eastward into the
Tennessee Valley. A shortwave trough was heading eastward through
PA/WV.

For most of the region this evening, drier air entering the region
will continue to provide for no precipitation. However, a persistent
gusty northwest wind will help maintain cloud cover across the
southeast West Virginia mountains, south into the Northern Mountains
of North Carolina. However, as the night progresses, these gusty
northwest winds will decrease in speed and back in direction. The
result will be a trend towards decreasing low level clouds through
the night, with little if any remaining by mid-morning Wednesday.
Also associated with the upslope flow will continue to be small
changes of very light rain, freezing rain, or snow across the higher
western sections of Greenbrier County, WV through approximately
midnight once winds weaken and begin to back. Low temperatures
tonight will range from around 20 to the mid 20s across the
mountains and upper 20s to around 30 across the Piedmont.

On Tuesday, the day will start mostly sunny for much of the area. An
area of low pressure will be heading east through TX/LA. Southerly
flow in advance of this system will be advecting first mid to high
level cloud cover into the region from south to north during the
middle part of the day. By the mid to late afternoon, low level
moisture and precipitation will arrive across the far southwestern
portions of the forecast area, including the Northern Mountains and
Foothills of North Carolina and neighboring sections of the Grayson
Highlands region of southwest Virginia. Most of this precipitation
will fall in the form of light rain. However, some very light snow
may mix with the rain along the crest of the Blue Ridge by the late
afternoon from roughly Floyd, VA southwest into the Northern
Mountains of North Carolina. High temperatures on Tuesday will be in
the low to mid 40s across the Piedmont and mountain valleys. The
higher mountain ridge tops will experience highs more in the range
of the mid 30s to near 40 degrees.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM EST Monday...

Winter returns and will be having warnings and advisories for the
entire forecast area. Models are showing enough QPF and leaning
toward the thermal profiles from the 12z NAM/09z SREF and 00z ECM to
allow for a snow to sleet to freezing rain transition starting
late Tuesday afternoon but more so Tuesday evening into early
Wed morning. The criteria we normally use for snow/sleet and ice
will not reach warning levels over most of the area, but
combined with make for impactful winter weather. The warned
areas will cover Southeast WV through the New River Valley and
down the Blue Ridge into the NC mountains/foothills, and
generally north of U.S. 460 and the Roanoke River in the VA
foothills/piedmont. Less QPF and warmer temps will lead to
advisory ice for southside VA into the NC piedmont, as well as
the Mountain Empire of Tazewell and Smyth, though QPF here could
be higher, the warmer southwest flow will keep them on the edge
of the wedge.

Going to see up to a quarter inch or more of ice across the
Greenbrier mountains into the Alleghanys and southern
Shenandoah Valley with a tenth to two-tenths down the Blue Ridge
and on either side, with less than a tenth inch of ice mainly
southside VA into the NC piedmont and portions of the southwest
VA.

Snow/sleet totals will be higher north of I-64, and with model
sounding showing a quicker transition to ice, have cut totals back
by 1 to 2 inches from previous forecast. Expect mainly 3 to 5 inches
north of I-64 from Lewisburg WV to Lexington VA, with pockets of 3-5
inches along the higher ridges as far southwest as Mountain Lake,
with most seeing less than 2 inches.

The cold air damming will be hard to dislodge going into late Wed
afternoon, so extended the time to midnight over the northern CWA as
warmer air will be last to change freezing rain to rain here.

Temps will fall into the  mid to upper 20s Tuesday night along/near
the Blue Ridge into the Alleghanys and Greenbrier to around 30/32
elsewhere.

Temps will be slow to rise Wednesday in the wedge with midday temps
ranging from the upper 20s to lower 30s across the
Alleghanys/Greenbrier southeast to the Blue Ridge near the VA/NC
border, with temps rising above freezing roughly west of I-77
in SW VA to the NC/TN border and south of the VA/NC border. By
dusk the only places with sub-freezing temps will be along the
Blue Ridge from Roanoke/Floyd border north to Lynchburg and west
to the Greenbrier Valley.

Another surge of rain will arrive with a front Wed night with temps
above freezing under warm advection.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1120 AM EST Monday...

Expect few changes to this wet forecast period, though models
showing a further southward shift to precip Thursday more over the
northern Gulf Coast states into central NC, with 1026 high over
Illinois/Iowa ridges southeast over the central Appalachians.
However, the flow buckles with southern stream energy Thursday
night, bring precip north again.

The high moves across the Great Lakes and off the mid-Atlantic coast
through Saturday with battle ground of precip aimed along a front
from east Texas to the Carolinas/southern Mid-Atlantic.

Most of this will be liquid as warmer air aloft wins out. Will see
showers with a cold front Sunday with precip and front pushing
southeast and east Sunday night, setting up for a dry Monday.

.AVIATION /21Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 145 PM EST Monday...

VFR conditions will continue to prevail across most of the
region through the conclusion of the valid TAF period at 18Z/1PM
Tuesday. The exception will be the region between roughly KBLF-
KLWB where northwest upslope flow will maintain a IFR/MVFR
ceiling through Tuesday morning. As low level flow backs
southwest, the upslope component will end and this region too
will transition to VFR ceilings by late Tuesday morning. Some
patchy very light snow, rain, or freezing rain is possible
through this evening across the higher terrain west of KLWB.

Winds will remain gusty through the remainder of the daylight
hours then weaken through the evening. Gusts of 30 to 40 kts
still are possible across the highest elevations across the
mountains, with 15 to 25 kts more probable in the mountain
valleys and Piedmont region. Winds will be light through the
night and Tuesday morning.

Flight conditions will remain VFR through Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday night a wide swath of wintry precipitation will
overspread the region, bringing sub-VFR conditions that will
continue into Wednesday. Wintry precipitation will transition to
all rain from south to north on Wednesday as temperatures warm.

A frontal boundary will meander around the region into the start
of the weekend, along with several areas of low pressure moving
along this boundary. This will keep the potential for
precipitation and sub-VFR conditions across the area.
