.A storm system moving out of the mid-Mississippi Valley will
affect a large part of the area with wintry weather, beginning
Saturday, mainly after daybreak, and lasting into early Sunday 
night. Areas from the Interstate 64 corridor northward are 
expected to see predominantly snow, with snow mixing with some 
sleet and freezing rain near route 460, and mainly a mix of sleet 
and freezing rain further south. Greatest impact is expected 
Saturday night into Sunday morning. Lighter wintry precipitation 
will linger through Sunday night and continue to gradually taper 
off on Monday.

.A storm system over the Southern Plains will move through the
deep south today, then off the coast on Sunday. This will bring
wintry weather to the Appalachians and central mid Atlantic 
region, with precipitation falling as mostly snow north of I-64,

route 460 southward. Mostly freezing rain is expected from

...Wintry mix of precipitation expected to continue through
Sunday...

A slow moving vigorous storm system was moving east-northeast from
the western part of the TN valley this evening. Below freezing air
in the mid 20s to lower 30s continued to reside over the 
MidAtlantic and Central/Northern Appalachians thanks to a cold
wedge of high pressure slowly retreating away from the
northeastern U.S. Warm air aloft riding northward over the cold
surface air continued to bring a variety of winter precipitation
to the area. In the far northern parts of the forecast area,
mainly the I-64 corridor, precipitation was falling mainly as
snow. Further south, however, precipitation was falling mainly in
the form of sleet and freezing rain. As of 10 PM EST Saturday
evening, winter precipitation accumulations varied from 3 inches
of snow near the I-64 corridor to about 1 inch of snow and 1 inch
of sleet in the Blacksburg, VA area, to < 1 inch of sleet/freezing
rain toward areas such as Mt. Airy, NC.

Additional accumulations of mainly sleet and/or freezing rain
south and snow or sleet north can be expected overnight and Sunday
morning. The precipitation will begin to diminish Sunday afternoon
and evening, becoming light snow or freezing drizzle by evening.
Accumulations of ice, sleet, and snow will continue to result in
hazardous driving conditions through much of the forecast area
through Sunday.

...Light Winter Precipitation to Linger Overnight and Early
Monday...

The winter storm that brought snow, sleet, and freezing rain to
the area Saturday, Saturday night, and today has moved northeast
of our region. However, weak low pressure draped across the region
combined with a residual cold, below freezing air mass, will
remain in place overnight and into Monday morning. The combination
of these two factors will result in intermittent to occasional
light freezing drizzle and light snow. Additional accumulations of
snow are expected to be mostly less than 1 inch, with only trace
additional accumulations of ice. However, with temperatures below
freezing and ice, sleet, snow, and slush remaining on the ground
from the earlier winter storm, untreated and unplowed roads will
remain covered with ice, snow, and sleet. Areas of black ice can
be expected as well where winter precipitation melted Sunday
afternoon and will refreeze after sunset. Motorists tonight and
Monday morning should anticipate hazardous and treacherous travel
conditions, use extreme caution, reduce speed, and allow extra 
time to reach your destination.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will allow for drier weather under diminishing
northwest winds today. The high will shift northeast of the
region tonight and Saturday while wedging south along the
eastern slopes of the Appalachians. A low pressure system will
track from the Gulf Coast states to off the southeast coast this
weekend into Monday resulting in wintry weather for the region.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1100 AM EST Friday...

Low level cloud cover has faded from our SE WV counties with
near full sun now being reported across the entire forecast
area. Visible imagery indicates areas which have snow on the
ground...again mainly confined to our upslope SE WV counties. An
interesting feature to note... the snow on the ground which you
see across northern Mercer County,WV, appears to be the result
of the seeder feeder process which took place from the local ski
resort, where influx of water from the snow making seeded the
stratocu from underneath and resulted in precipitation
downstream.

Overall, Near Term forecast is on track. Strong dry inversion
was noted in the morning RNK sounding. As such, expect a mainly
sunny and seasonably cool afternoon with highs in the mid 30s
to lower 40s in the mountains, to lower to mid 40s east.

Cold high pressure is situated from Ontario to the Mid-Atlantic
and will stay put as we head through the afternoon and into the
evening. Models are in decent agreement in terms of the upper
pattern although some differences in speed of snow moving in by
Sat morning. Will lean toward an ECMWF/Canadian blend as these
model seem to be steady the past few run. As we head through the
night expect increasing clouds. Very dry air in place will
allow for a delay in light snow reaching our western mountains
until near dawn Saturday. Still only a dusting expected mainly
west of I-77. Still with cold air in place with temps in the mid
to upper 20s, any snow will stick to roads. However, bulk of
accumulations will hold off until Saturday and beyond.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 447 AM EST Friday...

A significant wintry weather event remains anticipated for this
weekend.

After significant collaboration efforts with surrounding
offices, Winter Storm Watches are now posted for a large portion
of the Blacksburg forecast area Saturday into Sunday night. In
collaboration with NWS Raleigh, have refrained from including
several counties adjacent to the NC Triad out of the Watch with
this package.

In general, there was little significantly changed in terms of
overall forecast philosophy regarding this forecast winter
storm. We continue to anticipate a rather progressive system
emanating from the mid-Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys
Saturday, but the greatest impact timing for wintry weather is
largely centered on Saturday night into the first part of
Sunday.

Model guidance continues to advertise a warm nose progressing
northward into at least the southern roughly half of the
forecast area. It remains uncertain how far north this warm nose
will progress, which still casts a great deal of uncertainty on
precipitation type transitions, when/how far north these
changes occur, and the overall influence of these changes on the
snow and ice accumulation forecast. Greatest sources of
uncertainty exist with these forecast elements, as most
deterministic and ensemble model guidance is generally coming
around to an event-total QPF ranging between a half to as much
as three-quarters of an inch.

In general, I continue to have some stronger level of
confidence in an all-snow scenario from the Alleghany Highlands,
southern Shenandoah Valley into a good portion of southeastern
West Virginia. Just below this area, from the New River Valley
into Roanoke and into the central Piedmont of Virginia,
precipitation appears to be largely snow but may mix at times
with sleet based on model guidance indicating warm nose
temperatures between 0 and +1C. Across the roughly southern
third of the forecast area, mainly south of the Roanoke River,
model guidance begins to show the warm nose intruding in
earlier, with warm-nose temperatures warming to values between
1.5 and nearly +3C. This results in precipitation types being
more of a mixture of sleet/freezing rain, with a pretty short-
lived period of snow at the onset.

Overall, snow amounts are forecast to be the greatest across
the the northern tier of counties where amounts between 4-6
inches with isolated as much as 8 inches of mostly wet, dense
snow are possible. Mostly snow and sleet is expected across
central areas with a combined snow and sleet accumulation
totaling 4-6 inches. Across Southside westward into the NC
Mountains and the Mountain Empire snow/sleet amounts here will
range from an inch to as much as four inches, but with some
icing ranging from a glaze to as much as a tenth of an inch.
Across the northern Piedmont of North Carolina, it appears the
greatest wintry weather accretions are mostly from freezing rain
of around 0.10-.15 inches, with perhaps a coating to an inch of
snow/sleet. Confidence in the above wintry precipitation
accumulation forecast in most areas is really no better than
moderate, though is closer to moderate to high as one moves
deeper into the colder air where more of an all-snow type is
anticipated.

Timing-wise, there may be an initial period of warm-frontal
light snow early Saturday before noon mainly northwest of
Roanoke. It should be mostly dry elsewhere until Saturday
afternoon. Precipitation intensity should begin to increase
moving into the late afternoon and early evening. Warmer air
aloft will begin to progress northward from central North
Carolina to our northern North Carolina counties, and will
continue to result in changeovers in precipitation type with
time across the central and southern part of the forecast area
into the overnight hours. The greatest accumulations of wintry
weather are currently expected overnight into Sunday. Colder air
will begin to filter back southward later Sunday into early
Sunday night as the storm system builds eastward into the NC/VA
coastal waters. A brief period of snow is expected as this
occurs, but intensity of snow should be light and begin to taper
to light snow showers or flurries by Sunday night. There may
still be some leftover flurries in the far southwest into Monday
but the greatest accumulation will have ended.

Those with travel plans will want to pay close attention to the
latest forecasts. Travel will likely be discouraged by Saturday
night into Sunday with snow/wintry-covered roads. Winds do not
appear to be strong enough and snow amounts likely not
substantial enough to yield significant power disruptions,
though a few power outages could be possible.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 300 PM EST Thursday...

The upper pattern will remain progressive with a quasi zonal flow.
Tuesday into Wednesday look to be quiet under high pressure. Another
cold front will drop down from the north Wednesday night, followed
by a wedge of high pressure building down for Thursday with a
renewed possibility of some light wintry/mixed precipitation.

Temperatures will moderate a bit and be above normal for midweek.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 100 PM EST Friday...

VFR associated with clear skies and light winds anticipated
through 00z/7PM...high pressure resulting in strong subsidence.

After 00z/7PM will see a gradual increase in mid/upper level
moisture from mid-CONUS storm system, cloud bases primarily
above 8kft with little or no impact through 06z/1AM Saturday.

After 06z/1AM Saturday cloud bases will gradually lower with
development of light snow across far western VA and into WV,
conditions becoming MVFR and possibly IFR before daybreak
Saturday for areas west of the Blue Ridge.

Light snow is expected across much of WV and into VA Saturday
with impacts to visibility mainly impacting the Virginias and
points north. Farther south into the Carolinas, little or no
precip Saturday will continue to promote VFR there.

Flight conditions will deteriorate regionwide Saturday night
with IFR anticipated across much of the Mid-Atlantic associated
with impending winter storm. Hodgepodge of p-types can be
expected with sleet/freezing rain for the carolianas and
sleet/snow for the Virginias.

Forecast confidence: High.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

Winter storm will track east and across the Mid-Atlantic
Saturday night and Sunday with poor flight conditions.
Slowly improving conditions are expected on Monday as the storm
pulls away and high pressure builds in although lingering sub-
VFR in low clouds may persist over the mountains into Tuesday.
