.A cold front moving across the region tonight will usher in a
shot of Arctic air on Sunday continuing into Sunday night. Strong

period of accumulating snow is expected in southeast West
Virginia, the Mountain Empire, Grayson Highlands and the northern

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move east across the Tennessee Valley this
afternoon, and through the Mid-Atlantic region tonight. This
feature and its associated cold front will bring periods of
rain today into tonight. In the wake of this system, strong
northwest winds will usher much colder air and mountain snow
showers into the region on Sunday, with the very cold conditions
persisting into the start of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1245 PM EST Saturday...Have cancelled the Winter Weather
Advisory for Bath and Greenbrier Counties. Observations indicate
wet bulb temperatures have risen above 32F, with precipitation
expected to take the form of rain. Hot Springs continues to show
UP in the observation but temperature and dewpoint are 33
degrees so any frozen precip likely erroneous. Did add some
areas of patchy fog on the western side of the wedge, with
visibilities generally 1-3 statute miles, though is a bit lower
toward the I-77/Fancy Gap area. Otherwise, no other changes made
at this point as we await initial onset of rain just beginning
to sneak into our far southwestern CWA.

Previous discussion from 230 AM...

Active scenario over the next 24 hours as a strong upper trough over
the southern plains swings quickly northeast today and tags up with
northern stream energy sliding by to the north. This should help drive
rather deep surface low pressure from the western TN valley this
afternoon to across the region later this evening and to the east by
daybreak. Will initially see weak isentropic lift and upslope aid some
lighter rain development this morning before the better jet dynamics
and deeper moisture arrive ahead of the leading edge of sharp shortwave
energy aloft by this evening. However guidance remains slower to
produce much precip this morning espcly north where have ongoing
headlines for possible icing/light snow. Thus have toned coverage back
a bit as the latest HRRR has little within the advisory area until
things have warmed up after 18z. Otherwise little change other than to
slow down pops this morning before steadily increasing from west to
east toward mid/late afternoon, primarily west of the Blue Ridge. Highs
tricky given a rather warm start in spots and timing of in-situ wedge
development that will offset strong warm advection aloft. Since timing
looks slower, edged up highs closer to the current Euro/Mav Mos blend
for mainly late day highs with only the north remaining in the 30s.

Window of heavier more widespread rainfall looks to come by this
evening ahead of the upper trough and associated surface cold front.
Models show a strong lift/divergence axis crossing the region aided by
strong dynamics and weak instability aloft across the southwest.
However deeper convection looks to stay south with much of this
rainfall crossing into a brief transition from wedging to warm
advection which should keep rates lower outside of any embedded bands
just ahead of the cold front. QPF likely to be on the order of 1-1.5
inches far west to less than an inch east where showers should be
moving faster tonight. This could cause some localized flooding issues
but given lighter expected rain today, wont hoist any flood watches for
now. Other issue could be with southerly winds mixing down within the
band of heavier rainfall, espcly BLF and points south within a brief
window early this evening. Still doesnt appear enough for headlines at
this point with soundings showing the jet basically above the inversion
within a saturated layer.

Timing of the cold front still looks to be across the far west just
prior to dawn and near the Blue Ridge near 12z. Latest forecast
soundings suggest the abrupt surge of cold air may be just fast enough
to catch exiting moisture across the far west where ran with a
changeover to light snow/sleet prior to daybreak, espcly BLF/LWB
vicinity. Amounts look less than an inch at best but still a flash
freeze scenario where moisture lingers as the punch of strong northwest
winds arrives around the same time with the dry slot working from west
to east after midnight. Since already have an advisory ongoing for
today, plan to hold off addressing the cold advection headlines until
later on for now. Otrw slowed down the cold air a bit from the Blue
Ridge east where models are always too fast to swing the 85h boundary
across. This likely to result in a range from 50s southeast late
tonight where temps will be quickly rising overnight, to 30s Blue
Ridge, to falling into the 20s far west late.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
As of 335 AM EST Saturday...

By sunrise Sunday, the surface cold front should be east of the Blue
Ridge with the bulk of the heavy rain moving over the coastal
piedmont. Meanwhile, a closed low associated with this Arctic front
will open into a trough over the Ohio Valley. The deformation zone
from this trough and cold air working into the region will have rain
changing to snow across the mountains through the morning. There may
also be a brief period of sleet during this transition. Snowfall
totals for Sunday morning will range between a dusting to two inches
across the mountains with the high-end range across elevations above
3000 feet of southeastern West Virginia.

Snow will change to snow showers going into the afternoon as
northwest flow increases over the region. Moisture from the Great
Lakes will impact the mountains late in the afternoon and into the
evening. An additional 1-2 inches of snow is likely for western
slopes. Channel vorticity axis will stretched from the Midwest to
the southern Appalachian Mountains into the evening. This may help
produce more snow along western slopes than currently forecasted.
Intense snowbands may also develop during the evening hours across
the Mountain Empire and New River Valley, quickly reducing
visibilities and dropping an inch or so of snow in a very short
time.

In addition to have hydro issues with rain from Saturday night and
the snow Sunday, strong gusty northwest winds will also be a
problem. The best pressure rises and strongest low level jet occurs
after the front moves into the piedmont Sunday morning. Winds of 20-
35 mph with gusts approaching 50 mph are possible along the Blue
Ridge. Elsewhere winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph will be
common. Winds are expected to weaken some through the afternoon, but
will remain breezy into Monday morning.

Sunday's high temperatures (upper 20s to lower 30s) across the
mountains will occur early in the morning. Strong cold air advection
through the day will have temperatures dropping into the low to mid
20s by sunset. Across the foothills, maximum temperatures (lower
40s) should occur by late morning, then drop into the lower 30s by
the end of the day. The piedmont may touch 50F by noon then see
temperatures fall into the upper 30s. It is also worth mentioning
that with the very cold air rushing into the area Sunday, water left
on roadways may freeze creating patches of black ice.

The combination of strong winds and very cold temperatures will
create dangerous wind chills Sunday night into Monday morning.
Temperatures Sunday night are expected to fall into the single
digits across the mountains to the teens east of the Blue Ridge.
Wind chill readings across the mountains will be below zero and into
the single digits east Monday morning. Temperatures will warm while
the winds weaken Monday afternoon, but the area will remain in a
deep freeze into Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 230 PM EST Friday...

Synoptic pattern in decent agreement Tuesday then differences grow
as a pronounced trough moves out of the southern Rockies. While
differences remain in the timing of individual short waves the
overall pattern of a broad upper trough over much of the continental
United States remains through Thursday.

Tuesday morning the surface high will be centered over the Mid
Atlantic states. As the high moves offshore Tuesday night and
Wednesday winds will increase from the southwest. The next cold
front reaches the area Wednesday. Models develop a strong surface
low along this front Wednesday night with a wide range in solutions
for the location of this system by Thursday morning. Will lean
toward WPC's blended ECMWF/GEFS solution.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 102 PM EST Saturday...

An active 18z TAF period with low clouds, light rain with
intervals of mist/fog thru 00z, then a strong frontal passage
should bring with it a short-lived period of RA+ between 01-06z.
See TAFs for timing. Current flight categories generally are
sub-MVFR at the TAFs and there is high confidence of at least
sub-MVFR through 06z at most TAFs. Winds initially are east to
southeast 4-8 kts will tend to veer to south around 4-8 kts
through 06z. Will also see periods of LLWS through midnight as
southerly low- level jet of 40 kts precedes frontal passage.

Aviation concerns for the latter portion of the TAF period
(06-18z Sunday) include a gusty frontal passage with
strong/gusty winds across most terminals, MVFR-IFR visby snow
showers at Bluefield and Lewisburg and VFR type snow
showers/flurries into Blacksburg. Strong cold temperature
advection overnight into early Sunday could result in freeze-up
of untreated runways especially from Roanoke westward as
temperatures fall into the 20s. Flight categories should
generally improve to VFR conditions at Lynchburg and Danville by
early Sunday morning. Will see lowest flight categories further
west one goes due to snow showers and MVFR type ceilings.
Winds should be between 10-18 kts Sunday with gusts between
20-35 kts. Strongest wind gusts tomorrow at Roanoke with gusts
by late in the TAF approaching 45 kts.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

Should see improving conditions Sunday evening as snow showers
decrease in coverage in the western mountains and ceilings
begin to improve. Winds will still be strong with potential for
turbulence near the Blue Ridge through Monday morning.

Winds will diminish Monday into Tuesday with gradual clearing
and return to VFR underneath strong subsidence from High
pressure passing overhead.

Surface front enters by Tue night-Wed with an increasing chance
of precip with sub-VFR returning.
