.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will approach the region overnight and cross the
region on Friday. High pressure will build in behind this system
through the start of the weekend. A weak cold front may bring
isolated showers to western parts of the area Saturday night into
Sunday, but overall, high pressure will continue to dominate our
weather pattern through at least Tuesday of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 245 PM EDT Thursday...
We are tracking an upper level low pressure system currently
centered over the Missouri Bootheel. Through the next 24 hours, this
system is expected to transition into a slightly negatively tilted
open wave and cross our region Friday afternoon. In advance of this
system, southwest low level flow is expected to increase through a
progressively deeper amount of the lower troposphere. This will have
the effect of advecting eastern Gulf of Mexico moisture into our
region. Look for increasing cloud cover heading into the evening
hours, along with some isolated to scattered showers, especially
across southwestern and western sections of the forecast area. An
isolated thunderstorm cannot be ruled out.
By the early morning hours of Friday, much of the western half of
the area is expected to be covered with showers with scattered to
isolated coverage in the east. By daybreak Friday, coverage is
expected to be even greater, with the potential for some isolated
thunderstorms across the western third of the area.
The strong low level flow will result in an overnight period with
very little temperature drop after the initial quick cool down after
sunset. A few spots may actually see rising temperatures late
tonight prior to sunrise. Low temperatures will range from the mid
50s to around 60 across the mountains. Some of the elevated valleys
may be more in the range of the lower 50s.
For Friday, the cold front associated with the upper trough will
enter western sections of the region shortly after sunrise, then
track eastward through the afternoon hours. Associated coincident to
this front will be an area of notable low level shear with 0-3km SRH
forecast off the SREF to be around 200 m2/s2 all with a 500mb-10m
mean shear vector around 35kts across the area. However, the best
MUCAPE will be east of the best shear. The one area where these two
maxima overlap is the far eastern section of the forecast area
during the afternoon. So our region may receive a taste of strong to
severe weather for a few hours in the afternoon before, the
strongest shear area intersects the better MUCAPE region east of the
forecast area. With the potential, have highlighted the potential
for gusty winds with the thunderstorm in this area.
Behind the front, 850mb winds are expected to shift northwest
rapidly, and proceed to increase to the 45 to 50 kt range according
to GFS, NAM, and ECMWF 12Z solutions. A review of a wind gusty study
using a local diagnostic tool points us strongly toward the need of
a Wind Advisory for the area of the Blue Ridge and points westward,
and the low end of High Wind Warning across the Northern Mountains
of North Carolina and adjacent Grayson County, Virginia. While the
strongest of the gusts will be at the highest elevations, roughly
those locations at and above 4000 feet, in these counties, the
concern for downed trees as the stronger winds aloft channel through
valleys, the warning will be in effect for the entirety of the
four counties in the warning. Wind Advisories and High Wind
Warnings will begin at noon and continue into Friday night and
Saturday morning. See the SHORT TERM portion of this discussion
for additional details.
High temperatures on Friday will range from the upper 50s to lower
60s across the mountains and upper 60s to around 70 across the
Piedmont. Most of these temperatures will occur around or shortly
after noon, with falling temperatures afterwards thanks to the cold
front crossing the area.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 240 PM EDT Thursday...
A line of ongoing convection will travel quickly eastward to the
Atlantic coast Friday afternoon into Friday evening. Best threat for
severe and locally heavy rainfall should remain east of our
area. SPC has outlooked eastern portions of the forecast area
for a marginal to slight risk of severe thunderstorms Friday
with the main threats hail and wind gusts.
With the passage of the mid level trough and attendant sfc front
by Friday evening, expect improving weather conditions west-to-east.
Behind the front, strong gusty northwest winds are expected with
pressure rises and cold advection on Friday night into Saturday. Our
local wind guidance tool suggests that gusts into Wind Warning and
Advisory criteria are possible across the higher terrain. Low
temperatures Friday night will range from the mid 30s in
northwest Greenbrier county to the mid 40s in the piedmont.
Saturday will feature sunshine and a gusty northwest wind. High
temperatures Saturday will vary from the mid 50s in the mountains
to the lower 70s in the piedmont.
Flow aloft becomes more zonal Saturday night into Sunday. A fast
moving shortwave from the Ohio valley will rotate east in the upper
flow to our north. With the help of orographic lift and surface
moisture convergence, this feature may generate a few showers. Low
temperatures Saturday night into Sunday morning will generally be
from the mid 40s in the west to the lower 50s in the east.
Held on to some diurnal isolated to scattered convection Sunday.
High temperatures Sunday will be in the 50s west to near 70 far
southeast. Low temperatures Sunday night will range from the upper
30s in the mountains to near 50 degrees in the piedmont.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 240 PM EDT Thursday...
An warm and increasingly unsettled period expected as a frontal
boundary/baroclinic zone which starts out to our north Monday may
sink south Tuesday, then retreats north on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a
strong subtropical ridge will try to amplify across the Southeast.
A progressive/highly kinematic shortwave tracking across the
northern U.S. could push the baroclinic zone further south causing
it to linger more in our area.
It will be warm with 850mb temperatures hovering around +15C or so.
Diurnal convection expected through the period with the better
dynamics/instability remaining to our north dependent on the exact
location of the boundary.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 145 PM EDT Thursday...
Cloud cover and some patchy light rain showers and isolated
thunderstorms are expected to start overspreading the area this
evening. However, conditions are expected to remain VFR through
roughly 06Z April 26th. After this time, flight conditions will
gradually deteriorate with the advance of a generous area of
showers and storms in advance of an approaching cold front. By
daybreak Friday, the vast majority of the area will see IFR
ceilings and MVFR visibilities.
Winds will be on the increase from the south starting this
evening, and ramp up significantly by the close of the valid
forecast period ending 18Z on April 26th. By that time, surface
gusts across the higher ridges of the mountains will be near 25
to 40 kts with the mountain valleys and piedmont region more in
the range of gusts of 15 to 25kts.
Confidence in the above aviation forecast is moderate to high
regarding timing of the synoptic system.
EXTENDED AVIATION DISCUSSION...
The cold front will cross the area between roughly 18Z and 21Z
April 26th. Look for a sharp wind shift to to the northwest with
speeds and gusts remaining strong. Flight categories will
improve rapidly as drier air is ushered into the area in the
wake of the cold front. The hold out will be parts of southeast
West Virginia where lower ceilings and lingering precipitation
will remain into Friday evening thanks to the strong upslope
component there.
VFR conditions are expected into the start of the weekend as
high pressure builds into the region. Winds will remain very
gusty Friday night into the start of Saturday morning thanks to
the tight pressure gradient between this approaching high and
the departing low.
A weak cold front may bring some isolated showers to western
sections on Sunday, along with gusty winds to area along and
west of the crest of the Blue Ridge. Brief, isolated sub-VFR
conditions are possible across southeast West Virginia.
Sunday through Tuesday generally VFR conditions are forecast.
