snow showers instead of freezing drizzle, opted to let the warning
expire as impacts are minimal. Freezing drizzle may still persist
and/or occur in other areas as moisture levels become more 
shallow, changing any snow leftover to freezing drizzle in areas 
where freezing temperatures are in place. However, any freezing

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front crosses today. Upper low crosses tonight into
Monday, with upslope flow through Monday night. Upper level
systems with reinforcing cold fronts mid and late week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 946 AM Sunday...

Surface cold front is currently moving east across the CWA,
denoted by a north to south line of briefly heavy showers. The
front will continue to push east through late morning with a
marked decrease in cloud cover occurring behind it. Have
decreased cloud cover faster with this morning forecast update,
but also bring clouds back in from the NW this afternoon.
Sunnier skies should allow temps to pop back up a few degrees
around midday before better cold air advection occurs during the
afternoon. Given expected sunshine and resultant sfc warming,
along with lowering heights aloft, am expecting isolated to
scattered showers to develop during the afternoon, with perhaps
slightly greater coverage across the NW quadrant of the CWA. A
sliver of instability may try to develop in the H9-H7 layer,
potentially leading to a lightning strike or two.

As of 818 AM Sunday...

Increased high temps for today given that current values are
already at/exceeding previously forecast highs. Still expected
temps to fall some during the afternoon as cold air advection
develops.

As of 700 AM Sunday...

Temperatures climbing well up into the 50s across the lowlands
in response to the warm front moving through earl this morning.

As of 535 AM Sunday...

Areas of rain, the steadiest/heaviest along and west of the
Ohio River, as well as along the eastern slopes of the WV
mountains, will push out of the area this morning, as the
causative warm front, or at least the more appreciable upglide
ahead of it, pushes off to the northeast.

The cold front associated with the parent low pressure system
approaching Chicago early this morning, will push into the area
this morning before washing out. The colder air will arrive
behind a second cold front that crosses later this afternoon.
By then, the deeper moisture will be gone, and not much
precipitation is expected with the afternoon frontal passage.

Rather, we will see weather typical of a mature system occluding
and becoming stacked, with variable clouds including a dry slot
that will allow for a period of sunshine, along with gusty
winds.

The surface low tracks into PA tonight, while a secondary low
takes over along the NJ coast. The upper level low crosses
northern portions of the forecast area. This will introduce cold
advection amid an increase in moisture, and strengthening low
level flow that veers from west to northwest.

This will introduce a return of clouds tonight, and an
increasing coverage of rain showers, that will change quickly
over to snow showers over the higher mountainous terrain. The
snow level will lower to about the lowlands by dawn Sunday, with
mixed rain and snow amid temperatures falling into the mid 30s
there. Meanwhile, the higher windward terrain could pick up an
inch or two of snow accumulation by dawn Monday.

Central guidance and MOS looked reasonable on temperatures, with
cooling holding off until late today on the passage of the
second front. Temperatures will drop below freezing across the
highest terrain before midnight tonight, and an advisory for
accumulating snow across the higher ridges of the northern and
central mountains starts at midnight tonight.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 448 AM Sunday...

An upper level low shifting eastward across the region will bring
mainly areas of snow showers Monday morning throughout the area, but
some rain could mix in due to the marginal surface temperatures
expected. Despite cold air advection behind the departing upper low
as it moves east towards the Mid-Atlantic region, temperatures will
still manage to warm to the low 40s across lowlands on Monday
afternoon and thus, a transition to rain is expected there. However,
precipitation will remain as snow through the day in the mountains
and periods of at least moderate snowfall rates could occur given
the strong upslope flow and sufficient moisture profiles through the
DGZ. Eventually, temperatures will cool enough again on Monday night
to bring a transition back to snow across the lowlands, but moisture
will be on a decreasing trend by this time so will likely only see
flurries Monday night with little to no accumulation west of the
mountains. In addition, winds will also be gusty out of the WNW in
the afternoon and evening with perhaps gusts around 45 mph
along the higher ridges in the mountains. Snowfall amounts from
tonight through Tuesday morning will generally range from 2-4
inches across higher terrain, but 5-9 inches will be possible
across some of the highest ridgetops. Given these snowfall
amounts and expected travel impacts, have decided to issue a
Winter Weather Advisory which begins tonight and ends on Tuesday
morning. There is also a Wind Advisory in effect along the
highest ridges in the mountains late morning on Monday through
early Tuesday morning.

Snow showers will continue through Tuesday morning in the
mountains, but will taper off by mid morning/early afternoon as
weak ridging aloft builds in. Temperatures will remain on the
cool side with highs in the low 40s throughout the area.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 448 AM Sunday...

An upper level trough will move across the region on Wednesday,
but moisture will be limited with this feature so only have
slight PoPs far northeastern sections of the CWA. This should
result in areas of light snow showers Wednesday morning and a
transition to a rain/snow mix in the afternoon. As the upper
trough pushes east of the region Wednesday night, the flow
becomes northwesterly and upslope snow showers are expected to
develop in the mountains, but any precipitation activity
should be pretty light.

Surface high pressure passes south of the area on Thursday with
return flow bringing a gradual warming trend and a return to
normal temperatures again by the end of the work week. Models
then show chances of precipitation could slightly increase on
Friday as northern and southern stream energy try to phase
across the eastern US, so have slight/chance PoPs to reflect
this in the forecast on Friday. These features quickly push east
of the area by Friday night and should set the stage for dry
conditions by Saturday across the area.

.AVIATION /17Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 1214 PM Sunday...

Back edge of MVFR deck is moving east into the mountains with a
period of VFR then expected to prevail generally areawide
through the afternoon. This clearing may allow for some slight
destabilization to occur, along with iso to sct -SHRA to develop
by mid afternoon. Impacts should generally be minimal, however.

Tonight, MVFR CIGs spread back into the area along with areas of
-RA developing. Thermal profile cools overnight with -RA
 transitioning to -SN, with more significant snow expected at
 KBKW/KEKN during the day Mon. IFR or worse likely once snow
 starts occurring.

Gusty WSWrly sfc winds 10 to 15 kts this afternoon, letting up
some overnight.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 18Z MONDAY...

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: High this afternoon, medium tonight.

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Timing of return of MVFR CIGs tonight may

rather low confidence at this time.
