.SYNOPSIS...
Snow this morning to mix with and change over to light freezing
drizzle and drizzle this afternoon. Milder for the weekend and
into the next work week. Weak front expected Monday night
followed by a stronger system on Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 313 AM Friday...

...Winter Weather Impacts Expected Today...

Snow continues to affect the northern third of the CWA early
this morning with about an inch estimated to have already fallen
from roughly Perry County, OH eastward to near Elkins. Light
snow should continue to spread east through the day, with precip
development expanding southward as the lower levels of the
atmosphere begin to moisten up. Primary forecast challenge is
how far south does wintry precip occur today, and how much
accumulation will take place.

Nearly all guidance indicates that any precip that occurs this
morning should start off as snow with good saturation prog to
exist in the dendritic growth zone. However, moisture depth is
prog to lessen through the day, with significant drying expected
in the DGZ. This will likely translate to a decrease in
snowfall coverage by late morning/midday and begin to transition
to more of a light freezing drizzle type of occurrence...which
may prevail during the afternoon. This transition from snow to
rain/drizzle is likely to occur sooner (by mid to late morning)
across southern WV and SW VA as a warm front shifts northward
and drying aloft kicks in faster.

Snow accumulations will be the greatest across the northern half
of the CWA where 1-3 inches should be common. Higher amounts
(4-6 on average) expected in the NE mountains. Around roughly
an inch of snow expected for central WV westward to far NE KY,
and minimal snow amounts farther south towards SW VA. A light
glazing of ice on surfaces may occur pretty much anywhere today
if freezing drizzle/freezing rain does indeed occur. Thus, will
maintain the inherited Winter Weather Advisory as several
impacts to travel on area roadways are expected today.

Another variable to deal with today will be temperatures. Temps
across the southern half of the CWA will have the best chances
of reaching/exceeding the freezing level, while the northern
half is likely to stay below freezing all day.

Moisture depth decreases further tonight with any lingering
drizzle in the mountains eventually coming to an end. Temps are
expected to slowly rise overnight as WAA increases.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 245 AM Friday...

This weekend, zonal 500 mb flow takes hold with the exodus of
the near term trough. Meanwhile warm, moist return flow
increases in the mid- to low-levels through the weekend,
ushering a significant warming trend. Saturday and Saturday
night remain mostly cloudy with remnant low- level moisture
lingering, lapping up against the mountains in weak westerly
flow. So, while temperatures rebound by several degrees at 850,
clouds will act to moderate Saturday and Sunday morning
temperatures. Guidance points to temps reaching the 40's/50's
Saturday, into the 30's overnight, and a good shot at reaching
60 across the lowlands by Sunday, especially if skies clear as
currently forecast.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 300 AM Friday...

Southerly flow increases Monday as a 50+ kt 850 jet edges in
ahead of a 500 mb short wave and accompanying surface low.
Guidance consistently brings widespread mid-60's into the
lowlands as a result, while the mountains warm into the
upper-40's to 50's, depending on elevation. Moisture converges
to near 1.15" PWAT, well into the 95+ percentile for this time
of year, in this region.

As the parent surface low sails across the Great Lakes Monday
evening into the overnight, a trailing cold front sweeps across
our area. Given strong overall flow, though weak shear, expect
fast-moving, though weakly-organized, showers with embedded
pockets of moderate rainfall as the front crosses. Convection
doesn't look to be a big threat with the front given weak lapse
rates. Timing differences do still exist, with the GFS spreading
rain showers across area by midnight with frontal passage by
12Z Tuesday. Meanwhile the ECMWF is about 6 hours slower as of
this model run.

High pressure briefly builds in across the Great Lakes Tuesday
night, switching flow northerly for a cooler Wednesday. Another wave
arrives quickly on its heels bringing moderate rainfall
potential through the end of the workweek. Considerable
synoptic differences exist between long-range models, but
models do agree on PWAT surging again to 1.25"+, which is well
above climatological norms. So, will have to monitor this period
for potential water issues late Wednesday until an airmass
change later on. This comes in the form of a cold front ahead
of a 500 trough that finally cross in the Thursday night/ Friday
timeframe, dropping temperatures and ending precipitation.
Substantial model differences exists however, so don't feel
comfortable straying far from blended guidance.

.AVIATION /12Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 544 AM Friday...

Large area of light snow should overspread most aerodromes
this morning with CIGs and VSBYs falling to IFR (or worse) once
precip sets in. IFR likely to prevail for much of the morning
across KPKB/KCKB/KCRW/KEKN, with lower chances of IFR at KHTS
and KBKW. Moisture decreases in snow growth region of the
atmosphere by late this morning and afternoon, which in turn
should result in a transition to -FZDZ/-DZ (dependent upon sfc
temps). Poor flight rules likely with the -FZDZ/-DZ through the
afternoon, although MVFR should be more common than IFR. Some
improvement in flight rules late this afternoon and evening, but
stratus strengthens overnight...resulting in renewed poor
flight rules.

Generally weak/vrb sfc winds early in the TAF period, becoming
more SWrly 5 to 10 kts during the day.
