|...Accumulating snow followed by bitter cold...

The arctic cold front has worked its way down to Sweetwater
County. The strongest post frontal northeast winds now extend from
Sweetwater County northeast to South Pass and on east to Alcova
where winds are gusting from 30 to 43 mph. Along the leading edge
of the cold front, the snow appears to be heaviest where 700mb
temperatures are are favorable to support optimal dendritic
growth. As one gets farther behind the front and deeper into the
cold air where 700mb temps are likely close to or below -20C at
700mb, the snow becomes finer and drier, still effectively
lowering the visibility as the snowflakes get tossed around by the
wind. Will keep the advisories going as is, expiring from
northwest to southeast during the day today as the trough
responsible for the snow and cold front exits to the southeast.
The bulk of the snow will occur west of the Divide as the
associated closed low tracks from Idaho southeast to northwest
Colorado. However, this happens to also be a favorable track for
the Lander Foothills and the adjacent east slope of the Wind River
Mountains to receive a bulls eye of snowfall relative to
surrounding areas east of the Divide. We think up to a half a foot
of fluff is possible in Lander once the snow ends there today.
Elsewhere, mostly 2 to 4 inch snow totals are expected at the
lower elevations where advisories are in effect along with
advisory amounts of 5 to 10 inches in the mountains where we do
have advisories. Will keep the warning going for eastern
Sweetwater County to take into account the stronger winds combined
with the snow there through 00Z Wednesday. After the initial snow
band occurred with the cold front in the Wind River Basin, there
was a temporary lull from the Owl Creek Mountain shadow effect
before the snow snuck back in from the southeast. This appears to
be the result of the low forming over Idaho and its associated
circulation resulting in a light southeast steering flow. The HRRR
depicted this well. In addition, isentropic lift appears the be a
contributor to the steady light snow north of the front across
the CWA. QG forcing directly associated with the upper low and
trough is also aiding in lift. The upslope flow will deepen as the
upper low moves to Colorado to our south which will be enhanced
by the synoptic scale dynamics, as mentioned above, as it seeds
the lower upslope clouds. This will be especially true true along
the Lander Foothills and along the Wyoming Range in southwest
Wyoming. With the cold air in place today, many areas will have
high temperatures only reaching 5 to 15 degrees. Many areas today
may witness the coldest high temperatures ever recorded in the
month of October.

Tonight, once the trough exits to the southeast, skies will clear
and the bottom will fall out as far as frigid dropping
temperatures go. We could very well see the coldest temperatures
ever recorded in the state of Wyoming tonight and Wednesday
morning for the month of October. This is an extremely cold air
mass for October with 700mb temperatures as cold as -25C. By
Wednesday morning, a flat positively tilted ridge moves into the
area from the west, resulting in relative warm air advection from
the west northwest. This is a favorable pattern for strong
nocturnal basin and valley inversions as well as fog development,
although we lack a large wedge of much drier air above the
inversion needed to support widespread fog. In addition, the lower
air mass will be fairly dry. However, we still have relatively
warm rivers and lakes that have not frozen yet which can
contribute to local patchy fog for later tonight and Wednesday
morning. Wind chills will be as cold as 25 to 35 below in
Sweetwater County tonight as it will take longer for the east
northeast winds to diminish there. We will be issuing a wind chill
warning valid from 00Z – 12Z Wednesday for Sweetwater County
which will go into effect as soon as the winter weather advisories
and warning expire.

Wednesday will see bright sunshine along with a slight recovery in
temperatures, but still very cold for this time of year with highs
10 to 20 in most areas along with some valley and basin inversions
holding strong.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday)

By Wednesday night, the core of the surface high will be to the
south across CO. Some of the cold core will still be affecting
southern WY, with areas south of the Divide again falling below
zero. Temperatures east of the Divide will be relatively balmy,
only falling to 5 to 10 degrees above zero. Thursday will see the
effects of the next approaching clipper system. High temperatures
will recover to the lower to middle 30s during the afternoon. This
will depend on how much westerly wind develops ahead of the
clipper and how much snow cover erodes during the afternoon.
Models have been faster and a little further south, so have
slightly increased the chances for light showers for the far
northern areas of WY, including the Big Horn Mountains. This
should pass quickly to the east by Friday morning, with highs
again in the mid to upper 30s. General northwest flow aloft
continues over the weekend, which will keep the coldest air away
from the region and allow further improvement in WY temperatures,
with highs near 40 Saturday and into the mid 40s Sunday. This
still is somewhat below normal for this time of year. Another weak
clipper sweeps into the northern Plains Sunday, with another
brief minor chance for a shower for the Big Horn Mtns.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning)

In northern WY, scattered light snow will end by 18Z. The main
snow will occur along and south of a KJAC-KRIW-KCPR line through
Wednesday afternoon. Snow will be decreasing after 00Z Wed in the
central and south and ending around 06Z Wednesday. Expect a gusty
wind in the north and central through 15Z. The strongest wind will
occur in southern WY later tonight and Wednesday with a northeast
wind of 25 to 35 knots through 00Z, then slowly decrease. MVFR
conditions with areas of IFR will occur in the north overnight.
Then after 15Z, VFR with areas of MVFR conditions will occur
through 00Z Wed. MVFR conditions will be common in the central and
south overnight and Wed with areas of IFR conditions. Conditions
will improve in the central and south to VFR with areas of MVFR
after 00Z Wed.

Focus remains on the arrival of very cold air into WY with the
current cold front. Winds will continue from the north today, with
areas east of the Divide generally 15 to 20 mph, while south of

of 25 to 35 mph with higher gusts. The center of high pressure
moves in tonight, bringing much lighter winds to the state, and
allowing temps to fall well below zero. A slow moderating trend
will start Thursday, with temperatures back in the 40s for the
