Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 204 PM MST Sat Jan 26 2019 .SHORT TERM...This afternoon through Sunday Gusty winds continue this afternoon over all but far western portions and the central basins, as the jet shifts eastward over the Northern Plains. Despite this, winds will once again blow in the same locations Sunday. First, after subsiding somewhat tonight, west to southwest winds will return from southern Lincoln County to Natrona County. This will be due to the surface gradient tightening, in response to the approaching cold front. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph will be common across this area. Second, gusty west to northwest winds over the northern mountains will increase by mid-morning Sunday. Strong low level wind shear will develop along the leeside of the Absarokas and Bighorns by this time. Gusts over 60 mph will occur over these mountains, including the Wind River Mountains. The timing of the cold front looks to enter WY earlier and looks to impact northern portions between 21Z Sunday and 00Z Monday. This would include northwest winds quickly increasing over northern Johnson County, with gusts approaching 60 mph before 00Z Monday. Otherwise, low clouds continue to hang over the far western mountains and Star Valley (a hole in the clouds has formed in the Jackson Valley this afternoon). Mid to high level clouds continue to stream southward over the eastern half of the state. Isolated to widely scattered snow showers will remain possible over the Bighorns and extreme NW portions through this evening. This trend will continue Sunday morning, before snow quickly develops over northern portions late Sunday afternoon. Afternoon temperatures Sunday will probably be the warmest the forecast area will have for several days. .LONG TERM...Sunday night through Saturday Sunday evening a low pushes down into the Dakotas and drags a cold front south out of Montana and across our FA. Models are in much better agreement on what is expected. The cold front will be a fast mover and snow totals look to be sub-advisory. Winds with this front will be the bigger issue Sunday night into Monday morning. Models are indicating BL winds of 40 to 50 knots over Johnson County and 30 to 40 knots over the Bighorn Basin. These winds will start picking up late afternoon Sunday and will last through the Monday morning commute. This will impact portions of I-25 and I-90 even with the lower amounts of snow accumulation. The Bighorn Basins winds will not be quite as high but highways 14, 20, and 120 could still see slick roads and visibility issues with blowing snow. Winter Storm Watches have been issued to cover these concerns. Northwest flow aloft Tuesday and Wednesday over the region with dry weather expected. There may be a few snow showers in the higher elevations of the northern Bighorn mountains Wed afternoon and night. Thursday into Thursday night, a weather system may cross the region with light snow in the mountains and far west valleys. The ECMWF model seems too strong with this system as it attempts to undercut the upper level high pressure ridge. The operational GFS model does not have this system near us, but some of the ensemble members hint at a weak weather system passing through the region. Will have a low chance of snow in the western mountains for now and leave the areas east of the Divide dry Thursday and Thursday night. Friday looks to be a dry day over the area. Some moisture increases over the west Friday night into next Saturday which would lead to a chance of snow. Dry Friday night east of the Divide. High temperatures will slowly moderate Tuesday through Friday, with the mountains and foothills milder than many of the snow covered basins. Low temps will be about normal for this time of year. && .AVIATION...For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Monday West of the Continental Divide (KJAC, KRKS, KPNA, KBPI) Mountain obscurations and areas of MVFR/-SN will persist across far western Wyoming, vicinity KJAC-KAFO, through the period. Also, surface west wind 20-30 knots will continue along the Interstate 80 corridor, KRKS, through the period, strongest during the daytime hours. East of the Continental Divide (KCPR, KCOD, KRIW, KWRL, KLND) A moist NW flow with areas of light snow and mountain obscurations over and vicinity of the Bighorn Mountains will continue through 07Z Sun. This strong NW flow will also bring areas of LLWS along the east slopes of the Divide at KCOD, which is expected to return by 02Z Sunday. This LLWS will lower and strengthen through 08Z. These conditions will continue through 21Z - 23Z, as a cold front moves through the area. -SN will then begin at KCOD and northern portions, quickly spreading southward with a cold front. VFR conditions will prevail through the TAF period. && .FIRE WEATHER... Gusty winds will continue this afternoon over all but far western portions. These winds will subside somewhat again tonight, before increasing by mid morning Sunday. Winds of 35 to 45 mph will be common over the Wind Corridor, while gusts over 60 mph occur over the northern mountains including the Wind river Mountains. A cold front will blast through the area by Sunday evening, with strong northerly winds occurring mainly east of the Divide into Monday.
