Temperatures will moderate somewhat through the end of the week as cloud cover increases and as warm air advection weakly increases aloft, but day time temperatures will still be colder than usual. Fortunately, cloud cover will limit overnight temperatures from dropping too much as well. More Snow: Temperatures will generally stay cold enough through the weekend that any precipitation that falls will remain as snow. After some light warm air advection snow showers late tonight, a weak system will pass through southern and central California Friday night into early Saturday morning. This trajectory will keep heaviest accumulations south of the Tahoe Basin where up to 6 inches is forecast. Mono/Alpine Counties could see 6-10 inches or so of accumulations. Western Nevada totals will be generally a dusting, but could see up to an inch of snow over Friday night; locations above 5000 feet along the Sierra Front could see a couple of inches. Another Significant Storm Saturday into Sunday: A more potent wave will move into the region later in the weekend bringing another round of significant snow accumulations for the Sierra and portions of western Nevada. Model trends are slightly wetter than previous runs and QPF/Snow Amounts have been adjusted higher for the Sierra. While QPF is marginally higher for western Nevada, snow amounts were generally trended lower since accumulating snow is less likely during the daytime hours. It should be noted that this storm trajectory favors locations from western Lassen County through Alpine County. Also, blizzard conditions will be possible at times in the Sierra with ridge winds gusting up to 100 mph. Preliminary totals follow: * Tahoe totals Sat-Sun: 1-2 ft at Lake Level, 2-4 ft above 7000 ft. * Western Lassen/Eastern Plumas: 12-18 inches. * Northern Lassen/Surprise Valley/Northern Washoe: 4-10 inches. * From North Valleys through Susanville/Doyle/Gerlach: 3-5 inches. * Reno/Sparks: 2-3 inches. * Sierra Front above 5000 feet: 6-10 inches. * Mono East of Hwy 395: 3-6 inches. * Mono West of Hwy 395: 6-18 inches. Boyd .LONG TERM...Sunday night through Thursday... Very few changes to the ongoing forecast for an active winter weather pattern to continue next week. Computer simulations have been consistent showing a low-pressure trough still over the eastern Sierra/western NV region Sunday night. The evolution of a cold front is less certain, with some model simulations showing it near the I-80 corridor Sunday night, while others showing it already to the Utah border. Along this (possible) cold front there is potential for a narrow band of heavier snow (6+ inches) and it should be cold enough for snow even at the lowest elevations. Apart from this (possible) cold front, expect "lingering snow showers" with up to a couple of inches possible Sunday night. For Monday-Tuesday, it looks likely to be mostly a break between storms, with chances for lingering snow showers at all elevations. A forecast challenge for Tuesday Night-Wednesday is: how much will snow levels rise ahead of the next storm? At this point, we prefer the colder solutions, and as such the current forecast calls for chances for snow showers at all elevations for Wednesday-Thursday. We did increase POP/QPF/Snow Amounts a bit for Wednesday night-Thursday morning to trend towards some of the wetter model simulations. The possible alternative scenario for Wednesday-Wednesday night is for a wetter and warmer Pacific trough to start spreading significant moisture across the Sierra into western NV. This scenario has stronger southerly flow ahead of the Pacific trough, snow levels possibly rising to 6,000 feet, an overrunning pattern with heavy snow for the Sierra, and rain (possibly with pockets of freezing rain) for lower elevations east of the Sierra. JCM .AVIATION... Light winds today with VFR conditions and increasing high clouds. Expect freezing fog near the KTRK terminal through this morning. Increasing winds will bring a return to turbulence and periods of LLWS this weekend as another system drops southward along the Oregon and northwest CA coast. Periods of snow return to the Sierra by late Friday and be almost continuous through the weekend. So expect accumulating snow at KTVL/KTRK/KMMH along with periods of VSBY/CIGS going below minimum. For western NV terminals, light snow accumulations are possible Friday night through Saturday morning (up to 2"), and again Saturday night through Sunday night (1-3").
