.SYNOPSIS...

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively mild this week
before turning colder this weekend and early next week. A strong
storm develops late Friday into the weekend bringing breezy
winds, mountain snow, and valley rain. A colder storm is possible
for Sunday night into Monday with snow for all elevations and
potentially very cold air through the middle of next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

Few changes were made to the ongoing forecast. The system for
Friday night into Saturday is the greatest concern with periods of
heavy mountain snow likely to affect travel in the Sierra.
Additional snow is likely Sunday into Monday, please see the long
term for more details. Winds will also be breezy Friday and
Saturday, but no more than what we would see with a typical
winter storm, with high winds not expected.

An area of low pressure continues to drop south in the eastern
Pacific early this morning. This system is even farther west than
previously progged and so qpf/pops have been reduced this
morning. There is a chance for a few very light snow showers along
the Sierra crest in Mono/Alpine Counties, but doubtful any
population centers or roads will be impacted given how far west
the center of the low is.

The main system has slowed slightly, with most Sierra travel
impacts starting Friday night between 7 pm and midnight. Snow
levels still look to start around 6500-7000 feet due to warm
southerly flow ahead of the main area of low pressure. Despite a
moderate atmospheric river tap, the southerly orientation of the
moisture plume will initially limit spillover into the eastern
Sierra and western Nevada. The heaviest precipitation will be on
western slopes up through the Sierra crest through Friday evening.
A cold frontal passage Saturday morning will bring a burst of
heavier precipitation, lowering snow levels, and allowing the
instability to overcome the less favorable upper flow. Based on
current forecast thinking, these higher precipitation rates will
peak between early Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon. Have
raised precipitation chances and liquid/snow totals midday
Saturday as well due to the slower timing.

Snow levels will fall to around 4500-5000 feet behind the cold
front. The position of the jet is likely to favor the Sierra from
approximately Lake Tahoe south for the highest snow totals. Winter
Storm Watches remain in effect with 15-30 inches possible in the
high Sierra and 6-12 inches for the Lake Tahoe Basin and
communities along Highway 395 in Alpine/Mono Counties. The one
exception will be for lower valley areas below 5500 feet where
2-6 inches are possible. Valleys of western Nevada will see rain,
but don't be surprised if some snow mixes in for elevations near
and above 5000 feet. For Virginia City and the Highlands, several
inches of accumulation are likely.

The system begins exiting Saturday evening, with lingering rain
and snow showers possible throughout the region. Upslope flow
could keep snow showers persisting through the night in the
Sierra. -Dawn

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next week...

The main change in the extended forecast was trending precip chances
and amounts slightly upward for Sunday-Monday. Confidence continues
to increase for a potent and cold storm system bringing more snow to
the Sierra Sunday through Monday night, with periods of snow also
affecting lower elevations, especially late Sunday night into
Monday. The Monday morning commute is already looking to be slick
and messy with potential for accumulating snow across the urban
corridor of western NV, and these travel impacts could affect Monday
evening's commute as well.

Highlights for the Sunday-Monday storm:

* For the Sierra, there may not be much of an open travel window
  between the departure of the Friday-Saturday storm and the
  arrival of this second storm. Snow near the crest may become
  lighter for a short period early Sunday but as the next storm
  bears down during the day Sunday, travel conditions will become
  more hazardous again. Currently, the worst overall conditions
  are most likely from late Sunday afternoon through midday
  Monday. This storm could produce an additional 1-2 feet of
  snowfall across the Sierra including the Tahoe basin, with
  locally higher amounts possible. This snow is likely to be more
  powdery in nature, producing periods of whiteout conditions with
  increased winds (but not expecting an extreme wind event).

* For western NV, a mix of rain and snow could begin as soon as
  Sunday afternoon (snow levels varying from 4500-5000 feet), with
  the worst overall conditions most likely late Sunday night into
  Monday morning as snow levels drop to most valley floors. The wild
  card is how far south the upper low drops along the west coast
  before kicking inland. If it reaches the SW Oregon or far NW CA
  coast, the potential would increase for heavier snowfall amounts
  (6" or more) in far western NV, with a few inches also possible
  into parts of west central NV. Other scenarios which show the low
  moving east across northern Oregon would bring lesser snow
  amounts, but still some light accumulations and its associated
  travel impacts for Monday.

Highlights for colder air mass through much of next week:

* Monday night-Tuesday night: A final wave rotating around the main
  low could keep snow showers and brisk conditions going into parts
  of the Sierra and western NV into early Tuesday, with additional
  light accumulations possible. The primary effect will be chilly
  conditions with 700 mb temps in the -16 to -18 C range, leading to
  highs mainly in the upper 20s-30s and lows generally in the single
  digits-teens (possibly several degrees colder in valleys with
  widespread snow cover). But putting that into perspective with the
  record cold currently over the northern Plains/Great Lakes region,
  the 700 mb temps in that air mass have been around -40 C!

* Wednesday-late next week: A weak ridge of high pressure is
  projected to build over CA-NV, bringing generally light winds and
  temperatures slowly edging upward but still likely remaining below
  average. Inversion conditions are probable, not that unusual for
  early February except they could be stronger for valleys which
  receive more snow from the Sunday-Monday storm. This would result
  in max/min temps being a few degrees cooler than our current
  projections. MJD

.AVIATION...

Light winds and VFR conditions will continue through today, with
areas of mid-high cloud decks mainly near the Sierra and south
of US-50. A break in the clouds over KTRK should last long
enough to allow areas of FZFG formation around the airport btwn 11z-
17Z. There is a low potential (less than 20% chance) of showers
affecting southern Mono County including KMMH, but the main effect
looks to be periods of mountain obscurations.

The next storm system will move in Friday, bringing increased
southwest winds and cloud cover. Precip and lowering ceilings
will begin mainly for the Sierra terminals by Friday night, with the
most widespread impacts from precip (mainly snow/IFR for Sierra
terminals, mainly rain/MVFR for lower elevations) expected on
Saturday. Ridge winds will also increase with this storm, leading to
turbulent conditions.

Another colder storm for Sunday-Monday will keep snow going for the
Sierra terminals, with periods of snow also likely for lower
elevations especially Sunday night into Monday, along with another
round of gusty winds. MJD
