Humidity has increased across northeastern California and far
northwest Nevada this morning with the approaching cold front. 
Rain showers are occurring in some locations already, mainly from 
Graeagle northward to the Oregon border. Areas south and east of 
a line from Graeagle to Eagleville will receive rain showers in 
the next couple of hours, so the Red Flag Warning is cancelled.

.SYNOPSIS...

Very warm and average temperatures continue today. A dry air mass
and high winds are expected Sunday and Monday ahead of a strong cold
front. Road and air travel, lake recreation, and critical fire
weather impacts are expected. Showers and cooler temperatures will
begin the week, with even some very light snow in the mountains.

.SHORT TERM...

Warm and dry conditions will prevail today with high temperatures
once again expected to reach the low 90s across western Nevada
valleys with low 80s for Sierra valleys. Although record highs are
not likely, temperatures will still be running about 10 degrees
above mid-September averages.

Afternoon westerly breezes with gusts around 20-25 mph will prevail
today, but the big increase in winds is expected Sunday and Monday
as a powerful cold front moves through the region. The combination
of a very dry air mass ahead of the cold front and strong winds is
expected to produce high-end critical fire weather conditions Sunday
into Monday until the cold front sweeps through and increases
moisture Monday afternoon. In addition to fire weather concerns, the
winds will make for hazardous boating conditions, reduced visibility
in areas of blowing dust, possible travel restrictions for high
profile vehicles, and aviation turbulence/wind shear.

The Fire Weather Watches that have been in effect over the last few
days have been upgraded to Red Flag Warnings. See the the Fire
Weather Discussion below for additional details including those
areas which may see a particularly dangerous situation for fire
weather due to the high winds and dry conditions.

Wind gusts on Sunday afternoon will largely be in the 35-45 mph
range with wind prone locations particularly along the Highway
395/I580 corridor could see gusts in excess of 50 mph. Winds will
likely stay elevated overnight as the strongest 700mb develops
across the Tahoe Basin and Sierra Front. As the cold front nears the
I-80 corridor early Monday afternoon, the strongest winds will shift
south of US-50, but still along Highway 395/I-580 where some
downslope enhancement is possible.

The cold front will provide much cooler temperatures on Monday with
highs largely in the upper 60s to low 70s across western Nevada
valleys and upper 50s for Sierra valleys.

Precipitation with the cold front will be concentrated mainly across
the northern Sierra and far western Nevada Monday morning and early
afternoon. Rain totals along the northern Sierra and far northeast
California generally look to be in the 0.25"-0.50" range with a few
hundredths to a tenth possible across far western Nevada. A
thunderstorm or two will be possible in far northeast California
during the day on Monday as the front moves through and provides a
bit of forcing. Light snow accumulations will also be possible
mainly above 8,500' but not looking much for than an inch or so
particularly with snowfall occurring during daytime heating. Fuentes

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next weekend

The main changes were to cool temperatures for the latter half of
the week and add precip chances north of I-80 Wednesday night into
Thursday. Ensembles are showing much higher probabilities of another
cold trough to drop into the northern Great Basin Thursday. Most
ensemble members are in good agreement with the timing as well.

Tuesday will see lighter winds and cool temperatures as the first
upper low departs. Overnight temperatures do not look to be too much
below normal due to residual low level moisture. However, freezes
are likely in many Sierra valleys and some frost in the colder NV
valleys is possible Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Wednesday the next low is moving toward the area in both the EC/GFS
ensembles. Winds will increase ahead of the next cold front, but
will not be as strong as Sunday. Peak gusts 30-35 mph seem
reasonable at this time with temperatures getting back close to
average for mid-September.

It will cool off into Thursday behind the cold front and continue
into Friday. Cooled off temperatures several degrees for Thursday
into Friday, but they may need to be dropped another 5-10 degrees if
the ensembles maintain the depth of the trough. There will be enough
moisture for post-frontal showers and added them north of I-80 Wed
night into Thursday where confidence is highest. Next weekend looks
to be quiet at this time with warming temperatures closer to
average. X

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions through Sunday. Winds will be the main concern for
the next 48 hours. Southwest wind gusts to 25 kts for all terminals
and some light mtn wave turbulence. Winds aloft increase tonight
with turbulence increasing, but LLWS looks to remain below
thresholds at this time.

Sunday, southwest winds will be strongest north of US 50 with peak
gusts 35-40 kts and around 30 kts to the south. LLWS will increase
along and west of US 395 and to affect all terminals, peaking
overnight Sunday night. Monday, winds continue, but strongest south
of US 50 where gusts could reach 40-45 kts while they will peak at
25-30 kts to the north. Showers are possible Monday north of I-80
with MVFR CIGS 18-03Z. X

.FIRE WEATHER...

...STRONG, LONG DURATION RED FLAG EVENT SUNDAY INTO MONDAY...

High confidence in the anticipated Red Flag event this morning and
all watches will be upgraded to warnings. For the 395 corridor where
downslope enhancement is likely we will go word it as a Particularly
Dangerous Situation. The event will start around in the morning
Sunday and last into early Monday evening as the cold front
progresses southeast.

Most areas will see wind gusts peak at 35-45 mph Sunday afternoon
into Monday. Most valleys will decouple some overnight Sunday night,
but winds will stay up on ridges and mid-slopes. Humidity recovery
will continue to be poor for one more night. Confidence in timing is
higher this morning. For northern areas, it will start Sunday
morning and go to around noon Monday. For Mono/Mineral, winds pick
up later, Sunday afternoon, and continue into early Monday evening.
Humidity will be very low Sunday with minimums 5-15% for all areas,
moderating some to 15-25% Monday.

For the 395 corridor from Susanville to Mammoth Lakes, models are
showing downslope enhancement is likely. It looks to peak a few
hours ahead of the front. Wind gusts of 50-60 mph in wind prone
areas are possible, particularly late Sunday night and Monday
morning north of Highway 50, and all day Monday south of 50. Past
fire events in these conditions have moved very rapidly with little
time to evacuate if a fire starts.

Now for some good news. After the front passes, winds will diminish
rather quickly with wetting rains possible north of I-80. In fact,
wetting rains are likely in the Sierra north of Tahoe. X
