Latest guidance shows precip increasing tomorrow afternoon generally south of US-50.\/Hodanish && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 511 AM MDT Sun Mar 10 2019 An upper level low will be off the central CA coast this morning and thru the next 24 hrs, it is forecast to move southward, ending up off the southern CA coast by 12Z Mon. Ahead of this system, west to southwest flow aloft will be over CO, while at the surface, many locations over southern CO will have breezy southerly winds this afternoon. There may be a few snow showers over the central mtns today, otherwise the weather will be dry. Temps over the southeast plains will be cooler today, while in the high valleys the highs are expected to be slightly warmer than on Sat. This afternoon, breezy south to southeast winds are expected over the southeast plains, with breezy southwest winds over the southern half of the San Luis Valley and over the mtns. Most of tonight will be dry across southern CO, but the latest runs of the NAM and HRRR show showers developing over the southwest mtns between 09Z and 12Z, and the HRRR also shows the potential for some isold showers over the peaks of the Sangres by 12Z. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 511 AM MDT Sun Mar 10 2019 ...Snow and Rain Expected across South Central and Southeast Colorado Monday through Wednesday... Monday-Tuesday...Models continue to indicate a strong upper low just offshore of the Southern California Coast early Monday morning, and remain in good agreement of this system lifting out across the Desert Southwest and into Western New Mexico through the day on Tuesday. Models are also in good agreement of strong and moist southerly flow developing across the region, as an embedded short wave ejects out across the Rockies Monday and Monday night. This will bring rain and high elevation snow to the Continental Divide early Monday morning, with rain and snow showers, as well as a few possible Thunderstorms spreading east across the high mountain valleys through the Eastern Mts and Plains Monday afternoon and evening. There looks to be a brief break of precipitation across the lower elevations late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, with moist southerly flow ahead of the main low keeping snow ongoing across the higher terrain, especially the Southern Mts through the day Tuesday, with another round of waa showers and a few possible thunderstorms spreading across the Southeast Plains Tuesday afternoon. The deep southerly fetch will keep snow levels at or above 9K ft through the day Tuesday, with the best accumulations expected to at or above 10K ft. With that said, have issued a Winter Storm Watch for the San Juan Mts above 10K feet, from 12Z Monday through 6 PM Tuesday, with 10 to 18 inches possible. May also need some highlights across the higher elevations of the Sangre de Cristo Mts for the same timeframe, though not as confident with amounts across the Sangres. With the deep southerly flow, temperatures will be rather warm, with highs in the 50s and 60s across the lower elevations, warmest on Tuesday, in 30s and 40s across the higher terrain and in the 20s at the peaks. Tuesday night-Wednesday...Models remain in decent agreement of phase two of the system, with it lifting out across northern New Mexico Tuesday night and into Southwest Kansas Wednesday morning, before continuing to lift north and east into North Central Kansas by Wednesday afternoon. The latest EC remains a tad faster and further north with the system, though both all models keep the best wrap around precipitation generally along and north of the Highway 50 Corridor through the day Wednesday. Strong dynamic lift spreading across the Southeast Plains Tuesday night, along with cooler air filtering in from the north, will allow for widespread rain and snow to develop and spread across the Eastern Mts and Plains, with snow levels falling to between 5-6K feet Wednesday morning. Surface cyclogenesis with the vertically stacked system will allow for strong north to northwest winds to develop across the Southeast Plains through the day Wednesday, with wind driven snow and rain expected Wednesday morning and early afternoon.
