Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1040 PM MST Tue Mar 5 2019 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday) Issued at 247 PM MST Tue Mar 5 2019 Upper ridge over the Rockies today, bringing warmer temps to most locations, with interior valleys and a few mountain locations back above freezing as of 2 pm. Ridge drifts east overnight, allowing winds to increase over most higher terrain and lee slopes, though doesn't appear to be enough of a mountain wave for damaging winds and will keep most gusts around 50 kts or less. Coldest overnight lows will be over the far ern plains where cold air mass is slowest to retreat, while downslope warmed east slopes stay milder than the past few nights. Continental Divide will see a few snow showers break out after 06z as Pacific moisture fetch reaches Colorado, though amounts through sunrise Wed should be light. On Wednesday, moisture continues to flow toward the Continental Divide through the day, though with upper wave hanging back toward the Great Basin until evening and warm mid level temps, suspect snowfall will be limited to higher elevations along the Divide through the day. Small CAPE (50-150 J/KG) and Lifted Indices approaching zero suggest convective nature to precip, and a lightning strike or two may be possible over the peaks north of Monarch Pass in the afternoon. Will convert winter storm watch to an advisory for highest Divide zones, as snow begins to accumulate by late afternoon. Farther east, downslope wly winds should warm eastern slopes and the I-25 corridor, while weak boundary backs wwd across the plains, keeping max temps across portions of the lower Ark Valley cold once again. In general, blended guidance looks ok for high temps, though made some small downward adjustments at a few locations based on residual snow cover. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday) Issued at 247 PM MST Tue Mar 5 2019 Models in general agreement through the extended period with slight differences into early next week. Ensemble spreads become modest by late in the weekend with decent forecast confidence. Wednesday night through Thursday...a series of quick moving upper level disturbances will move across the area during this period. Winds will be the primary concern Wednesday night into Thursday morning, especially across the mountains, spreading east into the Plains Thursday morning. Mountain wind speeds will gust in the 50 to 60 mph range Wednesday night and through the day on Thursday. not the best set up for downslope winds, however, a few wind gusts are expected to spread across the lower elevations of the southern I-25 corridor by Thursday morning. Temperatures will be tricky with mid slopes over the Eastern Mountains and along the I-25 corridor remaining in the 40s and lower 50s. For Thursday, mixing and gusty winds will allow for temperatures to rise into the 50s and perhaps a few low 60s across much of the region. The exception will be the far Eastern Plains out near the Kansas border, where a weak boundary will back westward into our eastern counties. This will likely lead to areas of drizzle and fog during the late afternoon and overnight hours. As far as snow is concerned, ongoing light to moderate snow will continue along the Continental Divide through the period. Friday into Saturday...a strong upper level trough is forecast to move across the area. Winds will remain gusty across the region and push the cold air back into Kansas Friday afternoon. Snow will also increase along the Continental Divide Friday into Saturday with moderate to heavy snow expected. A cold front will drop south across the Plains Friday night with a period of light to moderate snow possible over the lower elevations. Temperatures will remain warm on Friday across the Plains due to the expected mixing. Behind the front, temperatures will be cooler on Plains by about 10 to 15 degrees. Winds will subside by Saturday evening as the upper system moves off to the east. Sunday into Tuesday...weak high pressure will move across the area on Sunday ahead of the next approaching storm system by Tuesday. After a brief lull in activity on Sunday, snow will increase along the Continental Divide by Monday. By Tuesday, the upper storm system will track east into the Desert Southwest with a period of heavy precipitation expected to lift north across the region. Temperatures and atmospheric profiles are a bit warm for snow across the Plains, which will likely see rain. Of course, much depends on where the upper storm system tracks and where it cuts off, but overall there appears to be a decent period of heavy rainfall across the Plains.
