Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1045 PM MST Sat Feb 16 2019 .UPDATE... Issued at 854 PM MST Sat Feb 16 2019 Still looks like a moderate to heavy snow event is on track for Sunday night through Tuesday for much of southern CO with the snow falling in 2 rounds. The first will spread in Sunday night through Monday morning. A brief lull may occur for the eastern mountains and adjacent plains for Monday afternoon and evening before a second round of snow spreads in Monday night through Tuesday morning. These periods of snow coincide with ejecting energy from the Great Basin upper trof and the resultant upglide/shallow upslope these induce. Current highlights still look on track and have adjusted the start time of the Wet mountains to line up with the other mtn ranges as easterly upslope flow will likely start snow there a tad earlier than the adjacent plains. Still assessing the 00z model runs but suspect an expansion of the watches to include the remainder of southeast plains may be needed though snowfall may be borderline between advisory and warning criteria north of highway 50. This snowfall will be on the dry side of the spectrum with high snow to liquid ratios. Winds look relatively light as well which may limit impacts some as the snow will come in two doses. But overall, still looks like a good chance for widespread snow and travel impacts for southern Colorado Sunday night through Tuesday. UPDATE Issued at 540 PM MST Sat Feb 16 2019 Updated precipitation chances for this evening, mainly over El Paso county and for areas generally north of Highway 50 this evening. A quick inch of snow will be possible for areas that see quick heavy snow bands. Snow will shift south and east this evening and dissipate through 8 PM. No other major changes to the forecast at this time. Mozley && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday) Issued at 340 PM MST Sat Feb 16 2019 Currently... At 2 pm...A surface low was noted over KLIC. A cold front extended from this low and was moving down the Palmer Divide and was through the northern 1/2 of El Paso county. Showers of snow were noted behind the front. Strong northerly winds were occurring behind the front while south of the front strong westerly winds were occurring over the rest of the I-25 corridor and along most of the Raton Mesa region. These strong winds were associated with a dry-line-like feature which was moving east. Winds were light generally east- southeast of the sfc low, generally from areas from LHX - LAA and areas to the north of these locations. In the mtns, convective snow showers were still occuring per sat pix imgy and radar, with the brunt of the activity over the Contdvd. Rest of today and into tonight... Cold front will continue to move south across the remainder of the plains this afternoon and should clear the state by late afternoon. Showers will be possible generally north of a line from COS to LHX to just south of LAA this afternoon and early evening. Cant rule out a shower south of this line, but if it occurs it will likely be isolated in nature. Gusty NNW winds keep up over the plains through about mid evening and then will decrease. Skies should become clear. Any snow showers in the mtns should also end by mid to late evening. By later tonight skies should be mostly clear most, if not all, areas. Tomorrow... This will be an interesting day meteorologically. It will start off mostly clear and dry across the region but by the end of the day it will moisten up and snows will be falling over the higher terrain. The well-advertised trough/storm that we have been talking about for the last several days will be moving into the region. As the forcing aloft moves in from the west, forcing at the sfc, in the form of an arctic front. will be moving in from the northeast. The leading edge of the arctic boundary should back-door into the plains and extend from roughly LIC to LAA by noonish tomorrow, and then be located from COS-PUB to Kim by sunset. Snow will develop over the Divide by noontime with the activity moving east by late in the day. It is possible we could see snow showers over the lower elevations of the Palmer Divide by late in the afternoon. Max temps should reach the 40s most areas tomorrow, and will cool off from east to west as the front pushes eastward. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday) Issued at 340 PM MST Sat Feb 16 2019 Sunday night through Thursday: An upper level system continues to affect the region during the beginning of the long term forecast period (Sunday night) and the impacts are becoming more and more interesting as new models runs are ingested. What is being resolved is a prolong snow event for the mountains, as well as the plains. The synoptic set up is a 700hPa closed low slowly propagating over the 4 corners region of the country and a surface high pressure system developing over the middle of the country. The resulting synoptic-dynamic lifting mechanisms include multiple vorticity maxima, efficient upslope flow over the mountains, isentropic lift, warm air advection, and jet dynamics, all enhanced by Pacific Ocean based moisture. First, let's discuss the mountains, then let's discuss the plains. I'll start out by saying that there will be two waves of heavy snow, but this discussion will combine snowfall totals together. The first wave of snow will be from Sunday night through Monday night, then there will be a slight lull in snowfall, followed by the second wave beginning later Monday night through Tuesday night. Snow will already have started falling over the Continental Divide at the beginning of the forecast period and snow will continue to fall through Wednesday afternoon. There has been a Winter Storm Watch issued from 5PM MST on Sunday through 6PM MST on Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall will begin Monday afternoon and will last through Tuesday afternoon. At this point in time, storm total snowfall totals from Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon (which is far as our snowfall forecasts go out to) are 15 to 22 inches over the eastern San Juans, 10 to 15 inches over the La Garita Mountains, 12 to 18 inches over the Sawatch Mountains, and 12 to 18 inches over the Mosquito Mountains. Now moving over the eastern Mountains... Expect higher snowfall amounts over the eastern mountains due 700 hPa upslope flow, especially over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The main regions of upslope flow enhancement at 700hPa will be funneled to the southern portion of the eastern mountains, totals will decrease traveling north. The Sangres de Cristo Mountains will see 1 to 2 feet of snowfall, the Wet Mountains will see 1 to 2 feet of snowfall, Pikes Peak will see 1 to 1.5 feet of snowfall, and the Rampart Range will see 5 to 10 inches of snowfall. The limiting factor to the snowfall totals is where the best isentropic lift and best upslope component of the 700hPa wind sets up. A discussion of the variability will be included in the following paragraph of the lower elevation forecast. The San Luis Valley will see 1 to 2 inches in the first wave from Monday night through Tuesday night, but the second wave developing on Monday night will bring around 5 inches of added accumulation. The Winter Storm Watch excluded the San Luis Valley because of the delayed start time. As for the plains, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued from 2300 MST on Sunday night through 1100 MST on Tuesday. This watch encompasses both waves. The rationale behind the snow totals is the combination of both surface easterly upslope floe, 700hPa upslope flow, and a thermodynamic profile that lies within the dendritic growth zone. Surface temperatures will be cold, which means that snow ratios will be around 20 to 1 during the heaviest snowfall periods. There are some models that are producing more than the other, for example, the GFS has a bullseye of a 1/2 inch of liquid equivalent moisture falling over the greater Walsenburg region Monday morning, of course, I believe that is overdone, so a blend between the ECMWF and the NAM were used. Snowfall totals over El Paso, eastern Fremont, and Pueblo county will range from 4 to 8 inches, and what should be said about those totals is that the higher end amounts are dependent on if banded snowfall develops over the region, so there is uncertainty of the exact amounts still. Huerfano County and western Las Animas Counties will see the heaviest snowfall accumulation of the plains region with 8 to 12 inches of snow possible. The far eastern plains will see a storm total snowfall ranging from 3 to 6 inches of snow. It must be said that there is definitely still uncertainty in the forecast, especially since the amounts are what they are, but model trends and the dynamics are pointing towards a heavy snow outcome across the plains. During this period, temperatures will be much below average for this time of year. The plains will struggle to break 20F on Monday and Tuesday, followed by a slow warm up Wednesday through Friday. The San Luis Valley will see similar temperatures to what they have been experiencing the last month or so with high temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s, the upper Arkansas River Valley be in the upper 20s and low 30s, and finally the mountains will span the single digits to the teens. Low temperatures will also be much below average. The plains will be in the single digits Monday through Wednesday night, the San Luis Valley will be around or below zero, the upper Arkansas River Valley will be in the single digits, and the mountains will be below zero. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Sunday night) Issued at 1039 PM MST Sat Feb 16 2019 VFR conditions expected tonight through most of Sunday with light winds under 15 kts. Cigs will start to lower Sunday evening with IFR to MVFR cigs and vis in light snow affecting the KCOS and KPUB terminals after 05z. A couple inches of snowfall will be possible at both terminals by Monday morning. The heaviest snowfall accumulations can be expected across the mountains where 8 to 18 inches of snow will be possible over the 2 day period. Local areas may see up to 2 feet across the higher elevations. The adjacent I-25 corridor may see 4 to 11 inches, with the heaviest of these amounts likely to impact areas south of Pueblo. The southeast plains could see 4 to 7 inches with locally higher amounts over the 2 day period. These snowfall amounts are still subject to change as details become more clear.
