Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 253 PM MST Wed Feb 13 2019

Currently...several concerns through this evening; high winds across
the mountains, east into the Plains and fire weather.  Current high
wind warnings look good along the I-25 corridor.  Multiple reports
of gust exceeding 60 and 75 mph across the region.  Also areas of
blowing dust reducing visibilities on area roadways.  Strong winds
will continue into this evening.  Temperatures have warmed nicely
with 60s to and few lower 70s across the Plains.  Snow is ongoing
along the Continental Divide.

Tonight...dangerous fire weather conditions will continue into this
evening due to low humidity values and the strong gusty winds.
Humidity values are expected to rise after sunset as better moisture
moves into the area, however, winds will continue to be gusty.
Outdoor burning should continue to be postponed.

As for high winds, models have delayed the onset of the strongest
wind potential until after 5 PM this evening, especially in the lee
of the Eastern Mountains.  Most high-res models have very favorable
cross sections for downslope winds.  Mountain winds gusting in
excess of 75 mph will likely continue through Thursday morning.
Strong winds over the lower elevations will remain possible through
this evening, and perhaps a bit longer south of Pueblo.  This will
need to be monitored for extensions of the high wind warnings across
the area.  Strong cross winds will create dangerous driving
conditions on north south highways including I-25 for high profile
or light weight vehicles.  Areas of blowing dust will likely reduce
area visibilities on roadways.  Extreme caution is advised for
drivers.

The strong winds will help keep temperatures mild overnight with
most of the lower elevations remaining in the 40s, while a few
locations over the lee slopes stay in the lower 50s.

Thursday...strong westerly flow aloft will continue through the day
with periods of strong winds across the region.  Mountain areas will
continue to see gusty winds but should dissipate through the
afternoon hours.  Breezy conditions will also continue across the
Plains through much of the day.  This will allow temperatures to
climb into the mid to upper 60s across the region.  Humidity values
look to remain above 15 percent at this time, but extreme caution is
advised with any outdoor burning.  Areas along the Continental
Divide will continue to see periods of light to moderate snow
throughout the day.  An additional 2 to 4 inches are expected with
locally higher amounts on west facing slopes.  A cold front will
move into the Plains by the late afternoon hours with cooler
air heading into the evening hours. Mozley

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)

Thursday Night into Friday:

Snow will begin to ramp up once more as the second shortwave trough
develops over the Continental Divide. The second shortwave has
higher precipitable water amounts than the first shortwave that
developed over the region. The orographics are improved as well,
with low level winds oriented more orthogonally with both the
eastern San Juans and Sawatch Mountains. Snowfall amounts over
Continental Divide will range from 10 to 16 inches, which meets
Winter Storm Warning criteria. The La Garita Mountains and the
Mosquito Mountains will be at Winter Weather Advisory levels,
with snowfall amounts expected to be between 5 to 8 inches. The
Sangres do not warrant any sort of highlight, since snowfall
accumulations are expected to be below 4 inches.

There is model agreement that the plains will see some sorts of
precipitation, the tricky part is determining where will see what
type of precipitation. At this point in time, the I-25 corridor will
mostly experience rain (with El Paso County having the possibility
of freezing drizzle) and the far eastern plains will experience
some freezing drizzle to freezing rain and light snow. Over the
eastern plains a cold front will have passed over the region,
dropping surface temperatures to below freezing, but the air aloft
will still be above freezing, hence the dialogue of freezing
drizzle and freezing rain. Forecast sounding over the region
doesn't have much for saturation above the freezing levels,
meaning that the hydrometeros that will develop are below the
freezing level, not getting the chance to melt as it falls to the
surface, but I believe there will be areas that freezing freezing
rain and drizzle, therefore it has been included in the grids.

Friday, after the low shortwave propagates further east, will be
another mild day for the the region. The far eastern plains will be
cooler due to lingering clouds, though. Expect temperatures over the
I-25 corridor to span the 50s and lower 60s, the far eastern plains
to remain in the upper 40s to lower 50s, the San Luis Valley to be
in the upper 30s, the upper Arkansas River Valley to be in the 40s,
and the mountains tor be in the teens to 20s.

Friday Night into Saturday:

The next upper level trough will begin to affect the Continental
Divide late Friday evening into early Saturday morning. Snow will
spread over the eastern mountains as well, but the main impact will
be over the Continental Divide. Tentative snowfall amounts for the
eastern San Juans and Sawatch Mountains will range from 5 to 10
inches, which qualifies for a Winter Weather Advisory.

Along the plains a cold front will propagate during the afternoon
hours on Saturday. At this point, the front should remain mostly
dry, but some low POPs have been included in the grids to
incorporate the uncertainty.

Sunday:

Sunday will be a lull day in regards to the weather. Cooler than
average high temperatures are expected across the region due to the
colder air mass behind the previously mentioned cold front passage.
Some lingering snow showers are expected over the mountains
throughout the day, but accumulations will be light. During the
later evening hours, a broad positively tilted upper level trough
will begin to impact the region. The trough passage translates, once
again, to the potential for another heavy snow event over the
mountains.

Monday through Wednesday:

As the trough continues to propagate east, there may be some impacts
for the plains. The surface flow on Monday shift from the east at
around 15 to 20 knots, if model guidance is correct, that there is a
strong upslope component of the wind towards our mountains. Both the
GFS and the Euro are in agreement this will occur. The uncertainty
lies on where the surface low will form on the plains. So for now,
just know that there is the potential for a higher impact event over
the plains on Monday afternoon, but there is too much uncertainty
to pinpoint details.

The Euro has the previously mentioned shortwave propagating more
quickly than the GFS. If the Euro's solution is correct snow will
cease over the mountains Monday evening, but if the GFS's solution
is correct snow will continue to fall over the Continental Divide
through Wednesday. The more likely outcome in this situation is the
European model.

will continue across the region through Thursday.  Winds will remain

at times this afternoon before winds shift westerly.  Winds will
dissipate late Thursday before switching easterly late in the day as
a cold front back across the Plains.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Red flag conditions are expected this afternoon over southeastern
Colorado due to a combination of low relative humidity values, dry
fuels and gusty winds.

High winds are also expected today into tonight over the eastern
mountains, Pikes Peak and along the southern Interstate 25
corridor. Mountain locations are expected to have west winds
gusting in excess of 75 mph at times, while lower elevations
should see gusts in excess of 60 mph at times. Strong cross winds
are expected on north to south oriented roadways, including
Interstate 25. Those in high profile and light-weight vehicles
should be prepared for strong cross winds. In addition, potential
areas of blowing dust could cause reduced visibilities at times.

Accumulating snow, heavy at times, can be expected along
Continental Divide locations late today and tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Several inches of snow accumulation can be expected over the
Mosquito, Sawatch and Eastern San Juan Mountains Thursday night
through late Friday morning. Another round of accumulating snow
is expected over the mountains and possibly the high valleys, from
late Friday night through Saturday. There will be the potential
for more accumulating snow over much of the area Monday and into
early Tuesday.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
likely over Continental Divide locations from late today into
tonight, and will be likely this afternoon and evening over the
Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains, Pikes Peak, the Wet Mountain
Valley, and in Huerfano and Las Animas counties.
