.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 246 PM MST Wed Dec 25 2019

Current water vapor imagery and upper air analysis is indicating
moderate southwest flow aloft across the region with one embedded
short wave lifting out across eastern Colorado, as another embedded
wave is translating into the Great Basin at this time. Water vapor
imagery and regional radars are indicating dry downslope across
southeast Colorado with more moisture and echos across southwest
through northeast Colorado, including a few showers spreading across
the upper Arkansas River Valley into Teller County at this time. Lee
troughing across the southeast plains has allowed for breezy west to
southwest winds to develop across southeast Colorado, helping to
boost temperatures into the 50s to lower 60s at this time, with
current readings in the 30s and 40s across the higher terrain, save
for teens and 20s at the peaks.

Tonight-Thursday...Moderate southwest flow aloft across the region
tonight becomes more west to southwest through the day tomorrow, as
the eastern Colorado embedded wave and the Great Basin embedded wave
continue to translate north and east through tonight, leading to
short wave ridging building across the region through the day
tomorrow. Showers associated with the first passing wave will
diminish through the evening, with generally light accumulations
expected, mainly across the central mts. Models remain consistent
with increasing moisture ahead of the second wave across western
Colorado, leading to more orographic snows developing across the
Continental Divide, especially the southwest mountains after
midnight, which then continues into the morning before diminishing
through the afternoon. Models remain consistent of generally light
snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, greatest across the southwest
mountains. Model guidance also is indicating increased low level
moisture across the San Luis Valley, with current readings in the
lower to mid 30s, for areas of fog to develop through the overnight
hours, which looks to persist through early Thursday morning, before
dissipating into the late morning and afternoon. Further east, the
first passing wave will send a weak front across eastern Colorado
tonight, ushering in cooler temperatures, though will still be near
seasonal levels, for tomorrow.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 246 PM MST Wed Dec 25 2019

.Thursday Night through Friday...Northern stream and southern stream
shortwaves will merge over Colorado Friday night into Saturday.
Merging troughs are a challenging forecast with a higher amount of
uncertainty.  The southern stream shortwave will bring moist south
to southwest flow aloft into southwest Colorado, which is favorable
orographics for the Eastern San Juan Mountains.  Decided to issue a
winter weather advisory for snowfall Friday morning through Friday
night.  Current amounts in the grids would meet warning amounts. But
uncertainty is higher than normal, and have concerns amounts could
be lower. In collaboration with GJT, decided better to get the
advisory out for now and can upgrade to warning later if needed. The
southwest flow is also favorable for the Sangre de Cristo Mountains,
but amounts are below advisory criteria, expect over the higher
peaks. For the remainder of the mountains, orographics are not
favorable and anticipate modest, if any, accumulations. During
Friday afternoon, a band of warm air advection precipitation will
develop over the plains and possibly the southern Interstate 25
corridor. WPC Guidance has QPF of 0.2 to 0.4 over the southeast
plains, but it will mostly fall as rain or wet snow. Further west,
guidance has some light QPF over the southern Interstate 25 corridor
and southeast mountains.  It may be cold enough for precipitation to
fall as some snow.  WPC plumes for KPUB and KTAD show many members
with very light QPF and snowfall with a couple members having higher
amounts.  Suspect a few members have the warm air advection band
further west and will need to watch for some snow in these
locations.

.Saturday...This will be part 2 of the challenging forecast.
Cyclogenesis occurs somewhere extreme southeast Colorado into
southwest Kansas, with the low moving to the northeast during the
day.  By 00Z Sunday, surface low is near extreme northeast Kansas
into southeast Nebraska.  Main challenge is how quickly the moisture
will be able to wrap westward around the low as is moves to the
northeast. The general ensemble consensus is to have the heavier
precipitation stay to the north and east of the forecast area.  One
area of concern will be Monument Hill Saturday morning. Most of the
ensembles have light amounts with a few members showing heavier
totals, associated with a further west track of the low.  WPC
Guidance was used in the grids which has a prolong period of light
QPF.

.Sunday through Wednesday...Shortwave ridge develops over the
region with mostly fair weather through at least Monday.  Another
trough will move into the region late Tuesday into Wednesday with
grids increasing snow chances mostly in the mountains. --PGW--

overnight. Meteorologically, it does seem possible, but closer to

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

An additional 1 to 4 inches of snow in combination with gusty
winds is expected over Continental Divide locations, favoring the
eastern San Juan mountains from sunrise to sunset today.

In addition, an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow will be possible
over Continental Divide locations, once again favoring the eastern
San Juan mountains from around midnight tonight until sunrise
Thursday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Some lingering snow showers will be possible over the southwest
mountains Thursday morning, with additional accumulations
generally less than an inch.

The next round of accumulating snow is anticipated for Friday into
Saturday. There remains plenty of uncertainty with the track of
this system, but it currently looks like the southern mountains
will be favored for moderate accumulations with some accumulations
over the southeastern plains.

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible along the Continental Divide today and tonight.
