Mozley && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 325 PM MST Wed Dec 11 2019 Upper wave moving east toward Colorado from the Great Basin was spreading a good deal of high level cloudiness across the area this afternoon, though little in the way of precip was occuring as low/mid levels remain very dry. Temp have bounced back into the 50s over the plains and in the lee of the eastern mountains, with 30s/40s across most valleys and higher terrain. Overnight, might see just a few flurries over the peaks of the central mountains, though accumulating snow looks unlikely. Elsewhere, clouds and modest wly wind component should keep min temps warmer than the past few nights, with even usually cold high valleys staying above 0f. On Thursday, strong upper jet plows onshore across the Pacific Coast, with initial moisture reaching the central mountains by late in the day. Snow showers should break out along the Continental Divide from Monarch Pass northward toward sunset, though accumulating snow will likely wait until after 00z to get going. Only occasional bouts of high cloudiness expected elsewhere, with temperatures within a few degf of today's numbers. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 325 PM MST Wed Dec 11 2019 Latest meteorological trends still suggest that active conditions will be realized over many portions of southern Colorado, especially from Thursday night into the weekend. Initially, favorable orographic flow and atmospheric moisture will allow snow heavy at times in combination with gusty winds to develop over the Central Mountains and to a lesser degree southern Continental Divide locations by later Thursday afternoon/Thursday evening, with varying degrees of accumulating snow(heavy at times) continuing into Saturday evening as an upper system moves across the area, therefore have issued a long duration Winter Storm Watch for Lake and western sections of Chaffee counties from 5 PM MDT Thursday until 11 PM MDT Saturday. Elsewhere over the CWA, little to no accumulating precipitation in combination with above seasonal mid-December temperatures is expected during the Thursday evening into Friday time-frame. It still appears that the highest potential for colder temperatures and an increasing potential for accumulating precipitation/snow over eastern locations should be realized from Saturday into Sunday night(with the highest potential for widespread/heaviest precipitation now projected from Sunday into Sunday evening) as healthy upper trough(per PV analysis/etc.) in combination with northerly component surface surge impacts eastern Colorado. The heaviest accumulations will occur across the eastern Sawatch and western Mosquito ranges where wind driven snow with accumulations in excess of a foot will be likely. Snow will be lighter and come in more intermittent rounds for the eastern San Juan, La Garita and Sangre De Cristo mountains through the same period. Some moderate snowfall accumulations will be possible for these areas with the best chance for snow Saturday night and Sunday. Colder temperatures with a chance for snow will spread across the plains Saturday night and Sunday as a cold front moves through the region. Some light accumulations will be possible for the plains, especially on Sunday. Snow diminishes Sunday night through early Monday with dry weather returning for mid week. Expect hazardous travel conditions over the Continental Divide for late week through the weekend with the potential for wintry weather to impact the plains on Sunday.
