Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pueblo CO
1127 PM MDT Tue Oct 22 2019

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)
Issued at 305 PM MDT Tue Oct 22 2019

The upper-level pattern throughout the short term forecast period
will be from the northwest, bringing cool air over the region.
During the evening and overnight hours tonight, isolated snow
showers are expected to continue over the Sawatch Mountains,
Mosquito Mountains, and over Lake County, but should remain dry
everywhere else. Low temperatures overnight will be around seasonal
over the plains, with values in the low to mid 30s, the upper
Arkansas River Valley will be in the mid to upper 20s, the San Luis
Valley will be slightly below average with temperatures in the
teens to low 20s, the mountains will be in the teens to 20s, and
the mountain valleys should be in the teens.

Wednesday, during the mid to late morning hours, a cold front will
move over the plains, bringing gusty north to northeasterly winds
with sustained values around 15-20mph and wind gusts around
25-30mph. The cold front passage will keep high temperature values
below average, with Colorado Springs (55F) and Pueblo (61F)
around 6-8F below normal and Springfield (65F) only 2F below
average. The mountain valleys should remain mostly unaffected by
the front during the short term forecast period, but will
experience impacts later in the evening. Precipitation should
begin over northern El Paso County around 1700 to 1800 MDT,
initially as rain, but will quickly switch over to snow (read long
term). Teller County will begin seeing snow over the higher
elevations around 1500 MDT.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 305 PM MDT Tue Oct 22 2019

Early Wed evening, northeast upslope flow over eastern Co will be in
full swing, with precip being mainly north of highway 50 over
plains, over Fremont County and the central mtns. Then after 8 or 9
PM, the precip is forecast to spread south thru all the eastern mtns
and plains thru the rest of the evening. Precip over the Palmer Dvd
will likely already be snow early in the evening, with precip
changing over to snow from north to south over El Paso County thru
the evening. Overnight, the I-25 corridor will see snow, with the
lower elevations in Pueblo County expected to change over to snow
later than the rest of the I-25 corridor areas. The central mtns
should see increasing snow Wed evening. Portions (mainly the low
elevations) of the far southeast plains may see a mix of rain and
snow much of the night. At this time, it looks like precip should
hold off in the southwest mtns and most of the San Luis Valley (SLV)
until after midnight, but then the moisture should spread west, and
northern portions of the SLV could see a few inches of snow accum by
6 AM Thu. Wed night, the upslope over eastern areas deepens and
becomes more easterly over/near the southern I-25 corridor, but
remains more northeasterly over Pueblo and El Paso Counties, with
east-northeast flow up to about 600 mb according to the NAM. This
should lead to the potential for several inches of snow
accumulations along the eastern mtns, and the I-25 corridor south of
Pueblo. Current Winter Weather Highlight area still looks good, and
will leave the Watch in effect, however will change the end time of
the watch to 14Z for Teller and northern El Paso Counties. Chances
are that these areas will need a warning, with other areas like
southern El Paso and eastern Fremont counties needing an Advisory,
but it is a little too early to issue these.

This is a progressive system and the precip will be
decreasing/ending from north to south over southern CO beginning in
the early morning hours, and that is why will end the Watch sooner
for northern El Paso and Teller Counties. The southern I-25
corridor should not see the snow decrease until the afternoon. Temps
will be cold on Thu across all of southern CO, with 30s and 40s for
highs at the lower elevations. Expect dry and cold conditions Thu
night.

Dry and warmer weather is forecast for Fri, but temps will still be
below average. Temps will be even warmer on Sat and the weather will
remain dry.

For Sun and Mon, the models disagree on where the next weather
system will track. The EC moves an upper low into southern NV by
12Z Mon, with a front moving thru eastern CO resulting in upslope
flow along the eastern mtns and I-25 corridor with some precip
developing for Sun night and Mon morning. The GFS moves a
progressive upper trof across CO, bringing some precip to the area
Sun, but dry weather returns Sun night as the system moves out of
the area. The GFS has a front coming thru eastern CO Mon night and
dry weather thru Tue, while the EC shows that upper los moving into
NM, with another stronger trof digging south into WY and CO with
widespread precip over southern CO. Thus, there is low confidence
in the forecast for Sun through Tue.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Light snow or flurries will be possible across the Sawatch and
Mosquito ranges into tonight with little snow accumulation
expected through sunrise Wednesday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

A developing storm system will bring snow to the mountains and
adjacent plains Wednesday night and Thursday with the potential
for travel impacts in and near the mountains, Wednesday night
through the Thursday morning commute. The heaviest snow will
likely fall across the Pikes Peak region, and the Sangre De Cristo
and Wet mountains with amounts of 6 to 14 inches possible across
the mountain locations. Heavy snow could also impact the I-25
corridor, the Wet Mountain valley and western and central Fremont
county, with amounts ranging from 2 to 8 inches with the heaviest
amounts near the mountains and across the Palmer Divide and Raton
Ridge. The central mountains will see amounts ranging from 2 to 5
inches. Lesser amounts of 1 to 2 inches will be possible across
the remainder of the southeast plains. The San Luis Valley and
southwest mountains could see 1 to 3 inches. These snowfall
amounts are prone to change as the exact storm track and strength
bears some uncertainty. Those with travel plans or outdoor
activities should keep informed of the latest forecasts on this
developing storm.

Unsettled weather will return to the forecast for Sunday and
Monday as another storm system approaches the area. Some light
snow accumulations will be possible across the central mountains.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather spotters will not be needed tonight.
