Issued at 747 AM MDT Sun May 19 2019 Updated for cancellation of Frost Advisory. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 515 AM MDT Sun May 19 2019 The weak upper ridge overhead this morning will give way to an approaching upper low that will move into the Great Basin by late afternoon. Ahead of this system the winds aloft will increase from the west to southwest, and gusty southerly can be expected at the surface this afternoon. High temps today are expected to range from the lower and mid 60s over much of El Paso County to the upper 60s and lower 70s over most of the rest of southeast CO, and in the mid 50s to lower 60s in the high valleys. Dry conditions are expected this morning, but this afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected along the CONTDVD, and isolated to scattered activity over the eastern mtns and over portions of the San Luis Valley into the evening. Tonight, as the upper system moves a little closer to the area, precip is expected to increase over the southwest mtns, and a few inches of snow accumulation can be expected. Monday-Tuesday...Models continue to indicate an active weather pattern across the area as an upper low, just offshore of the Pacific Northwest Coast this morning, continues to be progged to dig into the Great Basin through the day Monday, and then lift out across the Rockies through the day Tuesday before continuing into the Northern High Plains Tuesday night. Latest models continue to differ on timing and location of the ejecting system, with latest GFS remaining faster and further north, than the ECMWF, which is slower and further south, with the 00Z and 06Z NAM runs fluctuating between the GFS and EC solutions. All solutions indicate strong south to southwest flow aloft across the Rockies on Monday, with moisture and uvv ahead of the ejecting system supporting widespread rain and high elevation snow across the ContDvd Monday, with showers spreading across the high mountain valleys through the eastern mountains through the day. The different solutions of the ejecting low really effect precipitation and severe weather potential across the plains, with GFS solution further north and east with induced surface low and associated warm frontal boundary, with the slower and further south EC solution indicating the induced low and front further south and west across the southeast plains. Current blended model solution is leaning towards the southerly and further south solutions, leading to better chances of severe weather across the southeast Plains Monday afternoon and evening, with the latest SPC Day2 Outlook still indicating much of the Plains in a marginal risk, with the slight risk running along the CO/KS border, with large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes possible, if instability can be realized. The further south solution also support better chances of wrap around precipitation across the Plains, especially in the Pikes Peak region, where snow levels could drop down to around 6500 feet Monday night into Tuesday morning. With the exact track of this system still in question, will need to monitor possible winter weather highlights across the eastern Mountains, however, there is enough confidence to issue a Winter Storm Watch for the Eastern Sawatch Range, Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, with 8 to 16 inches possible above 11,000 feet. Also issued winter weather advisories for the Eastern San Juan and La Garita Mountains, for 6 to 12 inches from later tonight through the day Monday. Hopefully models will become more consistent with this system as it moves into better ROAB coverage. Wednesday-Thursday...Despite the differences in timing and location of the system early in the week, the latest models are in general agreement that more energy digging across the Great Basin on Tuesday, with lift north and east across the Northern Rockies Wednesday and Thursday, bringing more rain and snow to the higher terrain along and west of the ContDvd and keeping the Plains mainly warm, dry and breezy withing mid level dry slot. May again need some winter highlights for the higher terrain along the ContDvd through this period. Friday-Saturday...Models continue to indicate more energy digging across the West Coast and lifting out across the Great Basin into the Intermountain West leaving the Rockies in moderate west to southwest flow aloft, and opening the door to possible cold fronts and increased low level moisture across the Eastern Plains, with current blended pops have slight to chance pops for daily convection. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1134 AM MDT Sun May 19 2019 Abundant cloud cover across the entire forecast area over the next 24 hours as the next upper low pressure system moves into southern NV tonight. Then late tonight, there may be a few thunderstorms over the far southeast corner of the state. The main storm risks will be lightning and wind gusts to 50 mph, but some of the stronger storms may also produce small hail. Light snow accumulations will be possible in showers and thunderstorms over the higher peaks this afternoon. Tonight, a few inches of snow can be expected over the Eastern San Juan and La Garita Mountains, with some light accumulations possible over the central mountains. Recent snow melt has increased the water flow in creeks, streams and rivers in the high county, and in the San Luis Valley. As a result, there may be minor flooding in some areas. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday Thunderstorms will be possible each day, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours and most numerous across the higher terrain. On Monday, one or two severe storms will be possible across the southeast Plains, with large hail to the size of half dollars and wind gusts over 60 mph being the main risks, though an isolated tornado is also possible on Monday. The main risk from thunderstorms through rest of the period will be lightning and wind gusts to 50 mph. Periods of snow, with moderate accumulations, can be expected Monday through Tuesday over the mountains above 10000 feet, with some light accumulations also expected below 10000 feet. Snow fall may create hazardous travel conditions across the higher mountain passes, especially across the Continental Divide. The higher terrain along and west of the Continental Divide will likely continue seeing snow accumulations Wednesday and Thursday. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
