.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 316 PM MST Mon Dec 31 2018

Currently...The upper low pressure system was centered over southern
Utah as of 230 pm, spreading abundant cloud cover across Colorado as
well as pushing moisture into the western half of the state. At the
same time, a cold front early this morning drove south, ushering in
very cold air and northeasterly upslope flow at the surface for the
eastern plains. Snow has been somewhat slow and steady for many of
the mt locations, while the lower elevations and the I-25 corridor
has seem more intermittent light snowfall. Most locations this
afternoon were reporting high temps in the teens to right around 20
degrees.

Tonight...The low pressure system is forecast to drop down into
northern Arizona tonight, pulling some of the forcing for snowfall
from the northern portions of the forecast area while shifting the
focus area for heavier snowfall to the Sangre de Cristo mts, the San
Luis Valley and the southern mts. Numerous winter weather highlights
are in place at this time and will continue into Tuesday, while the
advisories for Northern El Paso County and Pueblo County drop off
tonight as the system continues pulling away. Please visit the
warning and advisory products for anticipated snowfall amounts and
timing. However, brisk northeast winds combined with the very cold
air in place will make for a brutally cold night, hovering near
dangerous wind chills. The stronger winds are forecast to start
diminishing around 3 am. Expect overnight low temps of 5 below to 5
above for the plains, and zero to 10 below for the mts and high
valleys.

Tomorrow...The system begins to weaken tomorrow as it remains near
the Four Corners. This will allow snowfall rates to drop off
considerably for much of the area, but snowfall will linger the
longest over the sw mts and in the vicinity of Wolf Creek Pass.
Lighter winds are expected and welcome, but it will still be
bitterly cold with forecast maximum temps only reaching into the

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)
Issued at 316 PM MST Mon Dec 31 2018

.Tuesday night and Wednesday...Upper low will move eastward across
southern Arizona and New Mexico. Path of the upper low is too far
south to bring precipitation to the region, except the higher
terrain near the Colorado/New mexico border. Main forecast
challenge is minimum temperatures Wednesday morning, especially in
the mountain valleys. Cold surface airmass will be over the
region with the mountain valleys, such as the San Luis Valley,
having snow cover. Statistical guidance for low temperatures at
ALS ranges from -8 to -21. Given the uncertainty with amount of
cloud cover, took a middle value for lows in the mountain valleys.
Air aloft starts warming Tuesday night and the warmer air aloft
should help the minimum from diving to very cold values. Lows on
the plains will be in the single digits with a few below zero
readings in the colder locations. Moderating trend will start on
Wednesday with cold air likely remaining trapped in the mountain
valleys.

.Thursday through Saturday...As the upper low moves east of the
Rockies, a ridge builds over the region with dry weather and
continued warming trend. Low level cold air will remain trapped in
the mountain valleys, particularly where snow cover is present.
Any snow cover on the plains may also limit warming due to a lack
of vertical mixing.

.Sunday and Monday...Pattern change may be starting with a series
of Pacific storm systems moving across the Rockies. The first
system will arrive around Sunday and Monday. Too early to get
specific, but this pattern would tend to favor the Eastern San
Juan and La Garita Mountains for significant snowfall. The zonal
flow would also tend to keep the colder air to the north of the

Issued at 316 PM MST Mon Dec 31 2018

The combination of cold northeast surface flow across the eastern
plains, and an upper low pressure system over the Great Basin, has
produced extensive cloud cover across the forecast area as well as
snowfall for the mts and the I-25 corridor. Snow is expected to
develop over the San Luis Valley this evening as the upper low
continues dropping south into the Four Corners region. The far
eastern plains are expected to see little snowfall with this system.

Mt passes will experience IFR to LIFR conditions over the next 24
hrs.

KCOS and KPUB: The entire I-25 corridor will see intermittent MVFR
to IFR conditions through 18z due to low clouds and bands of snow
reducing visibilities and producing fog. Strong north winds to 40
mph will produce areas of blowing snow through approx 10z tonight.
Rapid weakening of the snowfall and cloud cover is anticipated
beginning at 18z, from the north to the south.

KALS: Snow developing with lowering clouds and increasing easterly
sfc winds through the evening. Look for IFR to intermittent LIFR
conditions to develop by 02z and last through the forecast period.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Snow will continue this afternoon and through tonight, from the
I-25 corridor and westward. Significant accumulations are
expected over the mountains, high valleys, Fremont county, and the
I-25 corridor from south of Pueblo to the New Mexico border.
Light accumulations of snow are expected over southern El Paso
county, the lower elevations of Pueblo county and eastern Las
Animas county.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Ongoing light to moderate snowfall across the Continental Divide
through the high mountain valleys, the Eastern Mts and the immediate
adjacent plains, early Tuesday morning will diminish from northeast
to southwest through the afternoon and evening hours.

Storm total snowfall of one foot to locally 2 feet can be expected
across Eastern Juan Mountains, with 8 to 16 inches of snow expected
across the La Garita Mountains, as well as the Wet Mountains and
Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Storm total snowfall of 5 to 10 inches
will be possible across the Central Mountains and the Wet Mountain
Valley, with 4 to 8 inches possible across the Southern Interstate
25 Corridor, including Walsenburg and Trinidad, as well as across
the Upper and Middle Arkansas River Valley and the San Luis
Valley. Snowfall of 2 to 4 inches will be possible across the rest
of the I-25 Corridor, with locally higher amounts possible along
the Palmer Divide, while the Southeast Plains could see a dusting
to an inch of snow through New Years Day .

This system will bring in the coldest air of the season, thus far,
with highs on New Years Day only reaching the single digits at
the higher peaks, and in the teens across the rest of the South
Central and and Southeast Colorado. Very cold wind chills of 10
to 20 below, can also be expected across the area early on New
Years Day.
