.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday)

Currently, GOES water vapor imagery shows a progressive trough
advancing east quickly across Colorado. The trough has spawned the
development of isolated to scattered showers, and occasional rumble
of thunder, across the high terrain, including light snow showers at
elevations over 9,000 ft. West to southwest winds associated with
the trough are gusting in access of 30 mph across most of southern
Colorado. The trough has sent a cold front south down the eastern
Colorado plains, and as of 2100 UTC, had cleared EL paso County and
was advancing through Pueblo, Crowley, and Kiowa Counties. Winds
behind the front are northerly, gusting as high as 50 mph initially,
decreasing to 30-40 mph further behind. Isolated rain showers have
developed along and behind the front along/near the I-25 corridor.
Additional isolated rain showers have developed ahead of the front
over the southeast plains. Temperatures span the 70s to 80s across
the plains, decreasing about 10 degrees immediately behind the front
(now 50s-60s in El Paso County).

Tonight, the trough axis will exit east out of Colorado, and the
front will continue to progress south down the eastern plains. Very
dry air will move in behind the trough, with TPW dropping to 50% of
normal or drier. Gusty winds at the surface will switch to a
northerly direction across the plains behind the front, and
northwesterly over the higher terrain behind the trough axis. Winds
will gradually decrease in intensity across the region through the
evening, becoming light across most of the lower elevations by
midnight. There will continue to be a dry thunder threat early this
evening across the eastern plains ahead of and along the front, so
the Red Flag Warning for dry thunder will remain in effect until 8
PM. Precipitation threat will be over across all of the forecast
area by 9 PM this evening. Temperatures will fall to around freezing
across the plains this evening, and into the teens and 20s in the
high valleys.

Tomorrow, northwest to westerly flow aloft will persist during the
day behind the previous day's trough and ahead of another trough
digging into the northern Rockies. Very dry air with near normal
temperatures will remain in place over southern Colorado, so surface
RH is expected to dip to critical levels across western portions of
the forecast area. Additionally, west winds gusting to around 35 mph
will mix to the surface and combine with the low RH and continued
dry fuels to create critical fire weather conditions. Therefore, the
Fire Weather Watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning for
tomorrow from Noon to 8 PM, for the central mountains, San Luis
Valley, eastern mountains, and the I-25 corridor counties. The
exception will be Pueblo County, where RH is forecast to be just
above critical levels, and winds will be slightly weaker. No
precipitation is expected tomorrow given very dry conditions and
lack of forcing between systems. Temperatures will rise to around 70
across the plains during the afternoon, with lower 60s expected in
Colorado Springs, and mid 50s to mid 60s in the high valleys.

.Saturday night and Sunday...Trough swings across Colorado late
Saturday night into Sunday, and a Pacific cold front will move
across the mountains and onto the plains on Sunday. Main concern
for the plains and eastern mountains is the increased wind speeds
with fire weather issues. Wind speeds will have not problem
meeting red flag criteria with winds gusting exceeding 35 mph
over much of the region. Looking at vertical profiles, it appears
there will be forward shear which will diminish the threat for
stonger downslope winds in the lee of the mountains. Northwest
flow behind a front is not the typical pattern for critical fire
weather conditions. However, airmass behind the cold front will be
dry with brisk northwest winds. Used a combination of CONSAll and
NBM for winds as NBM can be too light. Also decreased the dew
points in the NBM using CONSRaw as NBM has a moist bias with these
low dew point situations. Humidities on the plains dip to around
12 to 15% during the day on Sunday. With the dry conditions, will
lean towards being cautious and issue a fire weather watch for
Sunday. In the mountains of Lake and Chaffee Counties, a burst of
heavier snow will accompany the front with lighter snow in the
northwest flow behind the front on Sunday. Any amounts approaching
highlight values are at the top of the peaks on Lake County and
will not issue any winter weather highlights.

.Monday...Secondary disturbance moves over the region in the
northwest flow behind the main trough.  Main effects will be to
produce gusty northwest winds over much of the region.  Winds do not
look as strong as on Sunday and humidities are slightly higher
than on Sunday. Still may be some fire weather concerns over
portions of the plains. Other effect from the trough will be to
produce some snow over the mountains, mostly in the mountains of
Lake and Chaffee Counties. Currently, any accumulations appear to
be light. With cooler air aloft, temperatures will remain below
average.

.Tuesday and Wednesday...Flow aloft becomes westerly as the next
trough moves into the northern Rockies on Wednesday.  Temperatures
will warm to around seasonal values.   Some light snow may start
returning to the mountains of Lake and Chaffee Counties Wednesday as
the trough approaches.

.Thursday and Friday...The upper trough moves across the region
with a surface cold front moving southward over the plains and
eastern mountains. This pattern can produce snow over the eastern
mountains and eastern plains as well as the remaining mountains.
Some members of the GFS ensemble suggest the trough could be
deeper, slower, and further west which would increase the chances
for snow over the region. EC ensemble mean is further west than
the operational EC implying some members also have a slower,
deeper and further west trough. NBM POPs capture the forecast well
with scatterer PoPs over much of the region along with cooler
temperatures. --PGW--

VFR conditions are expected at the three TAF sites (KALS, KCOS,
KPUB) over the next 24 hours. A storm system moving across the
region is bringing gusty winds and isolated light rain chances to
the three sites early this evening. A cold front has pushed south
through KCOS and KPUB, causing winds to shift out of the north and
gust as high as 40 knots. Wind speeds will gradually decrease
through the early evening, becoming light at all three sites by
around 03Z through tomorrow morning, increasing out of the south
during the afternoon.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Dry thunderstorms are possible this afternoon across portions of the
Plains.  Thunderstorms will produce little precipitation, erratic
gusty outflow winds and lightning.  Lightning may lead to new fire
starts across the Plains, while outflow winds may cause fires to
spread rapidly.

High elevation snow is possible, mainly above ll000 feet. Locations
north of Cottonwood Pass may see 1 to 3 inches of snow on area peaks.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Increasing fire danger is expected across the higher terrain along
and west of the I-25 Corridor on Saturday and across most of southeast
Colorado on Sunday, as strong and gusty westerly winds and low humidity
levels, combined with dry fuels, will create critical fire weather
conditions. Caution is urged with any outdoor burning activities.

Accumulating snow is expected across the Continental Divide Saturday
night and Sunday, especially across the central mountains, where
3 to 6 inches of snow will be possible.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible across the Central Mountains north of Cottonwood Pass through
