RH values are still below 15% over the eastern plains and the San
Luis Valley, but winds have decrease to below critical fire
weather conditions, therefore the Red Flag Warning will be allowed
to expire.

A cold front is currently located over norther El Paso County and
is anticipated to develop to the southeast throughout the night.
Winds behind the front will be from the north, with sustained
winds speeds of around 15-20 mph.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 247 PM MDT Sat Sep 28 2019

Currently, analysis of GOES water vapor imagery and upper air data
shows a broad upper trough digging into the western US, spreading
increasing southwest flow across the Great Basin. TPW is generally
near normal over the high terrain, and above normal over the eastern
plains. Low clouds across the eastern plains have mostly dissipated,
while cumulus clouds are expanding across the mountains. Winds
across the plains are from the southeast and gusting to around 25
knots, while winds over the high terrain are increasing out of the
southwest. No precipitation is currently ongoing. Temperatures are
generally in the 70s across the eastern plains and high valleys, and
mid 60s in Colorado Springs where cloud cover through the early
afternoon had prevented heating.

Tonight, the western US trough will continue to dig south into the
Great Basin, causing southwest flow aloft to slowly increase over
Colorado. The majority of the forecast area will remain dry
overnight given a lack of large scale forcing and lack of mountain
top instability. There are two minor exceptions. The first will be
over the San Juan Mountains, where isolated to scattered showers and
weak storms will be possible within upslope southwest flow and
marginal moisture/instability. Second, there is low potential for a
thunderstorm to clip the far southeast corner of Baca County this
evening within increasing low level moisture on the southeast
periphery of the surface lee trough. Temperatures will be mild this
evening, with lows in the mid to upper 50s across the plains, and
40s in the high valleys. Low stratus, if developing tonight, should
remain confined to near the CO/NM border and over east-central
Colorado. Low stratus will likely stay well east of the I-25
corridor.

Tomorrow, The western trough will continue to dig south over the
western US and Great Basin, resulting in a continued increase in
southwest flow aloft over Colorado, as well as decreasing TPW. The
strong southwest downsloping flow pattern over Colorado will promote
drying of the low levels and deep inverted-V profiles, which in turn
will help to mix gusty southwest winds to the surface. Winds are
expected to gust as high as 40 mph across the plains and high
valleys, and even stronger at mountain tops. The gusty winds and low
RH will combine to create critical fire weather conditions across
much of southern Colorado. The exceptions will be over the far
eastern plains, the San Luis Valley, and the southwest mountains,
where RHs will be above critical thresholds. Therefore, the Red Flag
Warning remains in place over other most of the plains, I-25
corridor, and central and eastern mountains and valleys. The Fire
Weather Watch will remain over the San Luis Valley. While RHs still
look too high there (around 20%), we will allow the midnight shift
to view additional model data in the off chance RHs appear like they
may dip below 15% for a prolonged period. As upper forcing increases
with the approach of the upper low and embedded disturbances,
isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin to
develop over the Continental Divide Sunday afternoon.

...Biggest Impacts/Threats in Long Term Period...

* Critical Fire Weather Conditions expected again on Monday.

** RH values dropping into the low-mid teens from the San Luis
   Valley eastward into the southeastern plains.

** Winds gusting in the 35-45 MPH ranges, a bit higher in the high
   country.

** High confidence on impacts in the eastern and central
   mountains/valleys and the eastern plains, from La Junta west.

** Lower confidence on RH values becoming critical from La Junta
   eastward with more of a southerly surface flow expected.

There are some ifs for Tuesday and possibly Wednesday regarding
continued high/critical fire weather dangers. With the mid-level
trough elongating and slowly moving by to our north-northeast, a
cold front will sag through the region early Tuesday morning. The
front will help provide enough forcing for some isolated to
scattered rain showers across the eastern plains during the day.
Easterly flow behind the front should yield rain chances spreading
towards the west, into the eastern mountains, by late Tuesday
evening/night. This pushes higher dewpoints west into the Front
Range so any high fire danger risks may be shunted into the central
mountains and maybe the San Luis Valley. Will need to continue to
monitor these trends the next few days.

Cooler more fall-like temperatures are expected with the passage of
the cold front on Tuesday. Expecting highs to be right around if not
slightly cooler than normal for early October. Then, unfortunately
for the temperatures, the next trough will move into the Four Corners
region late week and develop a southwest flow. This will warm
temperatures back up nearly 10 degrees warmer, so well above normal,
as we head into the weekend.

Although VFR conditions are expected during the next 24 hours at
all 3 taf sites, it is going to be quite windy (from the south to
southwest) starting later tomorrow morning and lasting into the
evening hours. Gusts to 35 to 45 knots will be possible,
especially during the afternoon. Some blowing dust will be
possible at times at the TAF sites, especially once the winds
start to pick up in earnest during the late morning or early
afternoon.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

An isolated thunderstorm or two will be possible through the
night-time hours across extreme southeastern Baca County. Cloud
to ground lightning is the primary threat.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Fire danger will increase across the area with red flag
conditions expected Sunday and Monday, especially along and west
of the the Interstate 25 Corridor, as strong and gusty southwest
winds, above normal temperatures, low humidity levels and drying
fuels will lead to critical fire weather conditions.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible
each day through Friday, with the activity expected along the
Continental Divide Sunday and Monday, then the focus will shift to
the eastern plains for Tuesday through Thursday, then back to the
Divide for Friday. Cloud to ground lightning and gusty outflow
winds will be the main storm threats.
