.SYNOPSIS...
Temperatures will cool very slightly the next couple days, but still
remain a few degrees above normal. The first noteworthy cold front
of the season will close out the week as a strong storm system drops
into the northern Rockies, and forces the front south through
Arizona. Strong winds will be common through SE California and
western Arizona Thursday before more tranquil weather returns by
the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
A low amplitude, but otherwise innocuous shortwave was progressing
through the Los Angeles basin this afternoon spreading weak height
falls (less than 30m) into the SW Conus. Simultaneously, a backdoor
type front was enhancing easterly sfc-H8 winds through SE Arizona;
and objective analysis suggests 8-9 g/kg mixing ratios gradually
advecting into the SE quarter of the state. While synoptic forcing
will remain limited and moisture quality marginal, HREF members do
support a few sprinkles/light showers through eastern Gila County
Tuesday though overall likelihood and coverage barely justify 10%
POPs. Otherwise, the subtle height falls and attendant cooling will
result in temperatures 1F-3F below persistence through Wednesday.

An abrupt change in SW Conus weather will occur Thursday as a deep
shortwave currently analyzed over NW British Columbia will descend
and deepen into the Great Basin. In turn, the overall upstream
synoptic flow pattern will amplify; and sharp ridging through the
Pacific NW will support strong sfc pressure rises forcing a
pronounced cold front through the forecast area. Very typical in the
season with an enhanced thermal gradient, post front pressure
packing will become very tight promoting strong northerly winds. The
continental trajectory becomes favorable for focused funneling of
the strongest winds through the lower Colorado River Valley, and
current operational GFS analysis suggests immediate post-frontal
winds in the H9-H8 layer blasting 40-50kt Thursday morning into the
afternoon. Thus, advisory level winds are very likely through many
of the western forecast zones Thursday in addition to blowing dust
concerns. In addition, moisture levels will also tank behind this
front creating an extended period of fire weather concerns in
locations where fuels have become dense and dry enough through the
summer.

Further east, sfc low pressure should persist as the frontal
boundary temporarily stalls through south-central Arizona during
daytime heating yielding much weaker winds. With nocturnal cooling,
higher terrain pressure rises should allow the front to continue its
southward progression; however with the larger forcing mechanisms
ejecting into the central high plains, winds through the lower
atmosphere should weaken quickly. Nevertheless, a much cooler
airmass will bleed into lower elevations providing the coolest
weather of the season (and since mid May) with widespread Friday
morning desert low temperatures into the lower/middle 50s (and
likely some upper 40s in outlying locations). Model guidance has
steadily been trending cooler with each iteration the past several
days, though probably still display some warm bias given the rapid
airmass change (again, this is very typical during the first cold
front of the cool season).

Heading into the weekend, there does look to be a slight warming
trend with temperatures returning to seasonable levels as the potent
trough swings into the Midwest and heights over the Southwest rise.
Model spread is rather narrow as quasi-zonal flow and H5 heights
near 580dm become situated over the region. Overall conditions look
to be very near the seasonal average under this dry flow regime.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:

Surface gradients will continue to weaken and overall we will see a
dry westerly flow aloft keeping skies generally clear at the
terminals over the next 24 hours. Due to the gradients weakening,
winds will be on the light side and follow typical diurnal
tendencies in the Phoenix area over the next 24 hours. Most
observations will see speed 5kt or less. Winds will be very light
over the western deserts especially KBLH. No aviation concerns
expected for the next 24 hours at least.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Thursday through Monday:
Critical fire weather conditions are probable through the western
districts Thursday as a strong cold front barrels south through the
region. The lower Colorado River valley will be most susceptible
given the available fuels, winds gusting over 40 mph, and humidity
levels falling into the single digits through much of the day.
Eastern districts will see weaker winds though RH levels will still
fall around 10%. More tranquil weather will prevail Friday through
the weekend as the responsible storm system exits though some ridge
top gustiness will still be common. Minimum afternoon humidity
levels will still fall near 10% through the weekend and overnight
recovery will only be poor to fair.
