.SYNOPSIS...
Very cool conditions are expected today over the lower deserts, and
scattered showers with an isolated thunderstorm are possible over
high terrain areas north and east of Phoenix. Cooler than normal
conditions will continue into the weekend as a series of upper level
disturbances moves through the region. Breezy conditions are
expected today, with very windy conditions returning again on
Tuesday afternoon and evening ahead of the next major weather
disturbance. The second system moving through will bring a few
showers to the area Wednesday mainly over high terrain areas north
and east of Phoenix. Very cool temperatures will return Wednesday
with desert highs falling into the 70s. Warmer and drier conditions
are expected Thursday into the weekend and by Saturday many of the
warmer lower deserts may see the low 90s.

.DISCUSSION...
Isolated showers have developed across the northern fringes of
Maricopa County this morning, slowly moving eastward. Although
low-level moisture is not particularly robust, enough heating
amidst cool mid-level temperatures will be sufficient for marginal
destabilization near and east of the Phoenix area this afternoon
to support continued development of isolated showers and a few
thunderstorms. This threat will be diurnally driven, and should
decrease quickly after sunset. High temperatures are still
expected to peak in the low-mid 70s as well over the lower
deserts, around 20 degrees below normal.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
The weather pattern over the western CONUS
has become very cool and unsettled as a large upper trof has
developed spanning much of the west and central portions of the
CONUS. The system moving through our area today will be quickly
followed by another large closed low that is essentially
dumbelling around today's system. A very brief flat upper ridge
will affect the area Tuesday, but highs will only climb into the
low 80s and then the second strong upper low will push into the
area from the west. This second system looks to be every bit as
strong as the one moving through today, although it may be
slightly drier for southern Arizona. We will see another bout of
strong gusty west wind Tuesday afternoon and evening; peak gusts
in favored areas will exceed 50 mph at times and there will be
widespread gusts over 30 mph across the lower deserts.

At 5 pm on Tuesday, the latest ensemble situational awareness table
paints NAEFS 500/700/850mb climatological percentiles in excess of
99 percent for the zonal wind component in a corridor of west wind
moving through far southern California and Arizona. There are
pockets where the U component reaches the climatological max values.
We will likely be issuing another Wind Advisory for much of southern
California for Tuesday afternoon and evening. The main impact of
this second system will be Tuesday night into Wednesday, with wind
and cooling the bigger weather impacts. The main low center is
forecast to remain well north of Phoenix so instability will be
limited and thunder is not in the forecast. For now we will see a
few showers mainly over high terrain areas north and east of
Phoenix, but a few may form over some of the lower deserts as well.
Cooling will be substantial with this system; highs on Wednesday
will fall into the low to middle 70s over much of the lower desert
with Phoenix forecast to reach to just 74 degrees.

For the remainder of the forecast period - Thursday through Sunday -
a large baggy upper trof is forecast to remain in place across much
of the western states, with the trof extending southwestward and off
the California coast. The presence of the trof will keep
temperatures very cool on Thursday as highs only climb into the low
80s. It will be rather dry Thursday and for Friday into the weekend
the trof axis shifts west of Arizona keeping a drier southwest flow
aloft in place across the area and allowing high temperatures to
climb into the upper 80s to low 90s. Despite highs reaching into the
low 90s, readings will still be well below normals for the time. For
example, Phoenix is forecast to reach 92 on Saturday but the normal
for that day is 98 degrees.

.AVIATION...Updated at 1240 UTC.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT...

Gusty westerly winds and the potential for isolated showers and
thunderstorms this afternoon will be the main aviation concerns
through the TAF period. Wind gusts of 20-25 kts are expected to
develop this afternoon before tapering off later this evening.
Winds will maintain a westerly component before taking on a
southeasterly direction early Tuesday morning. Gusty winds are
expected once again tomorrow, with gusts of 20-30 kt possible out
of the west.

VCSH and VCTS has been added to area terminals between 20-23Z this
afternoon. Radar trends show isolated showers developing across
far northern Maricopa County, and should continue to develop this
afternoon across the Phoenix area. Cloud cover will also thicken
with BKN layer near 6000 ft expected. Best chances for TS will
north and east of PHX, but cannot rule out one or two
thunderstorms developing anywhere across the Phoenix area this
afternoon. The threat for showers and thunderstorms should end
abruptly by sunset. General clearing will also occur overnight,
though there could be a few low clouds through sunrise Tuesday
morning.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:

Breezy to windy conditions will continue once again this afternoon
across much of southeast California. Gusty southwesterly to
westerly winds with gusts of 25-30 kts will be possible early this
afternoon into the evening. Winds begin to taper off at KBLH later
this evening while KIPL holds onto gusty winds into tonight.
Otherwise, scattered cumulus aoa 8 kft will be possible this
afternoon with FEW-SCT high clouds passing through during the
period. Stronger wind speeds expected tomorrow just beyond the TAF
period, with gusts over 30 kt possible at KIPL and KBLH.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Wednesday through Sunday:
Cooler than normal, dry and occasionally breezy to very breezy
conditions are expected for the period as a series of upper level
systems move through the area. Wednesday will be a very cool day
with desert highs in the 70s. A warming trend is expected to follow
starting Thursday although with highs remaining below normal. The
highest temperatures are forecast for the weekend with highs in the
upper 80s out west and the lower 90s elsewhere. Lingering breezy to
very breezy conditions are expected on Wednesday afternoon with
westerly wind gusts of 20-30 mph out west and 15-22 mph elsewhere.
Breezy conditions will then resume on Saturday and Sunday
afternoons. Min humidities in the 20s will gradually fall to the 11-
16 percent range by Friday. Good to excellent overnight recoveries
will fall to fair in the lower deserts of AZ to good over SE CA by
Saturday.
