.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure currently over the region will lead to
above normal temperatures today with highs topping out in the upper
90s to 100 over the deserts. More unsettled conditions will begin
Thursday as a mostly dry low pressure system moves in from the
northwest. This will result in much cooler temperatures and breezy
to windy conditions across the region. A mostly dry and cooler than
normal pattern will continue this weekend and into next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Midday satellite imagery reveals bands of CI moving across the
region although temperatures so far have already warmed well into
the 90s and are running a bit warmer than yesterday. Moderate heat
risk is still expected in quite a few parts of Phoenix today as
highs reach the upper 90s to 100 on this final day of the 3-day
warmup. Beginning tomorrow expect the first day of a cool down
through the end of the week as a cold front moves through.
The high pressure ridge continues to shift further to the east as a
NE PAC low pressure system digs towards the CA/W Coast. Ahead of the
system a cyclonic PFJ moves into western areas beginning this
afternoon. The first advisory level winds are beginning this
afternoon through evening as very strong and gusty winds develop
across SW Imperial County and the pre-frontal gradient tightens
over SE CA.
On Thursday the base of the trough axis swings through SE CA with a
strong cold front with good thermal packing. Stronger, gustier winds
develop in SE CA and spread rapidly east into SW-S Central AZ by mid
afternoon with advisory level wind gusts as high as 55 mph. The
winds are expected to produce wide ranging areas of blowing dust
across SE CA and SW AZ as the cold air makes its initial push into
the region. Although localized reduced visibilities as low as 1.5
to 3 miles are expected, the chance of visibilities falling below
1 mile can not be ruled out entirely. Although the front features
a band of moisture with PWAT aob 0.75", dry boundary layer and
mid levels will sandwich rather modest RH from 850-700 mb. due to
a rainshadowing effect. Also, the main energy, moisture and
precip of this system continue to stay well north of the region.
So rain chances continue to be very low. However the "best" poor
rain chances are expected Thursday afternoon out west and Thursday
evening to Friday morning for Phoenix and the eastern high
country.
On Friday a secondary reinforcing shortwave rotates through the
region and maintains the breezy conditions. With the cold air behind
the system fully in place expect about 10 degrees of cooling from
Thursday's highs with highs only reaching the upper 70s to low 80s.
On Saturday and Sunday the pattern remains progressive with the
trough exiting east allowing a transitory ridge to pass through
Saturday night. Temperatures will rebound a bit into the 80s but
remain well below normal. Also for late Sunday a disturbance moves
through ahead of a significant cold front from the northwest that
moves in Monday. This will bring another round of very breezy to
windy conditions as well as another cool down to near 80 degrees
for the highs on Monday. Monday's system also brings a better but
slight chance of precipitation with its trough axis digging south
into N-NW MX.
Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures should rebound into the mid to
upper 80s due to a progressive ridge moving through after Monday's
system.

An approaching low pressure system will lead to a substantial
uptrend in surface wind speeds over the next 24-36 hours starting
this afternoon and evening. A cold front will enter southeast
California this evening and slowly move across Arizona late
tonight and through the day Thursday. Anticipate the frontal zone
to reach metro Phoenix roughly by 18Z Thursday. Winds will be
strongest over southeast California with frequent gusts of
20-30kts (locally higher) this afternoon and evening followed by
frequent 30-40kt gusts Thursday afternoon. Winds will be 5-10 kts
less east of there (including metro Phoenix). Southwest and west
directions will be favored for most of this time - especially
during the stronger wind periods (except southerly over/near the
Lower Colorado River Valley).
The system will not have a lot of moisture with it. Accordingly,
shower activity is not anticipated over the forecast area (except
for virga - especially with the frontal zone). So, ceilings will
only locally get down to around FL100 but otherwise remain above
FL180.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Saturday through Wednesday:
Cooler and occasionally breezy to windy conditions are expected
for the period as mostly dry weather systems move through the
area. This pattern will keep max Ts significantly below normal
into next week. By Sunday evening very breezy to windy westerly
winds will return, especially across the higher elevations of SE
CA to SW AZ and the eastern high country with another dry system.
A cold front Monday will provide a slight chance of precipitation
with breezy conditions expected. The breezy conditions will
persist each remaining afternoon through the end of the period.
Min RH values values generally ranging in the 12-17 percent range
will improve slightly by Sunday. Fair to good overnight
recoveries will improve to mostly good by the second half of the
period.
