Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Phoenix AZ 225 PM MST Tue May 14 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure currently over the region will lead to above normal temperatures through Wednesday with highs topping out in the upper 90s to 100 over the deserts. More unsettled conditions will begin Thursday as a mostly dry low pressure system moves in from the northwest. This will result in much cooler temperatures and breezy to windy conditions across the region. A dry and generally cooler than normal pattern will continue this weekend and into next week. && .DISCUSSION... SPC mesoscale analysis, WV and satellite imagery depicts a weak upper level disturbance moving east across the region with a few CI and CU across the area. Also scattered showers and isolated storms are developing along the Mogollon Rim. The axis of the large high pressure ridge has repositioned just to the east of the area with temperatures already warming well into the 90s. The disturbance's weak vorticity combined with just enough lingering instability and moisture over the higher terrain will help trigger isolated afternoon and early evening showers and storms again over the higher elevations east of Phoenix. Although not likely, isolated minor flooding can not be completely ruled out for S Gila County in the late afternoon and early evening. Today is the second day of a rapid 3-day warmup that lasts through tomorrow for the region. Even as the ridge axis shifts east the H5 height and thickness values are expected to increase into Thursday. Highs are on course to climb to the upper 90s to low 100s across the deserts by Wednesday, including a high near 100 degrees on Wednesday for Phoenix. As a result, moderate heat risk is expected for Phoenix on Wednesday. By late Wednesday very breezy to occasionally windy conditions across SE CA to SW AZ will develop due to the onset of upper level height falls and the tightening cyclonic flow ahead of an approaching NE Pacific weather system. On Thursday the closed low pressure weather system begins to push inland through the West Coast/central CA as the ridge axis repositions further east. The height falls ahead of this cold front system followed by the initial CAA will allow temperatures to fall back to slightly below normal by Thursday with the front and the upper 70s to low 80s behind the front by Friday. Also on Thursday, windy to very breezy conditions will spread across the entire region. This also includes likely wind advisory level wind gusts in excess of 40 mph across the higher elevations of SE CA and the lower Colorado River Valley The main low is expected to track into the Intermountain West Thursday and into Friday followed by a second reinforcing shortwave disturbance pivoting through Friday night to Saturday morning. The main dynamics, moisture and precip of this system stays well north of the region. A rainshadowing effect will keep POPs low across S Central AZ during the period with the exception of a slight chance of showers and storms across the higher elevations northeast-east of Phoenix during Thursday evening to early Friday morning. However very breezy to occasionally windy conditions will again develop across the region by late Friday afternoon due to the secondary wave. A slight warmup is expected over the weekend with generally dry zonal flow and weak, passing high pressure just ahead of a dry shortwave system and gusty winds on Sunday evening. Broad shallow troughing continues into next week with a series of very progressive disturbances and cooler than normal temperatures continuing. && .AVIATION...Updated at 1920 UTC. South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT: A weak upper level weather disturbance will pass over the area today but with little effect. Anticipate less storm activity over the higher terrain east of metro Phoenix than was seen yesterday. However, there is still enough lingering moisture for isolated higher terrain storms. Otherwise, winds will follow warm season diurnal patterns (a bit more noticeable afternoon gusts on Wednesday). No significant clouds overall, just some minor cirrus with some afternoon cumulus. Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH: A weak upper level weather disturbance will pass over the area today but with little effect. Anticipate storm activity will be even more isolated than yesterday. If any storms form, anticipate the most likely location will be La Paz County. H Otherwise, winds will follow warm season diurnal patterns. No significant clouds overall, just some minor cirrus with some afternoon cumulus. Friday through Tuesday: Cooler, dry and occasionally breezy to windy conditions are expected for the period as dry weather systems move through the area. By Sunday evening very breezy to windy westerly winds will return, especially across the higher elevations of SE CA to SW AZ and the eastern high country with another dry weather system.
