High pressure will continue to build across the Desert Southwest today resulting in a rapid warming trend and the warmest conditions so far this year. High temperatures across the lower desert will easily warm into the middle 90s today and Tuesday. A pair of low pressure systems will move through the area during the middle and latter portions of the week bringing increasing wind, much cooler high temperatures and a threat of showers across the lower desert by Friday night. && .DISCUSSION... The Phoenix area failed to top 90 degrees on Sunday, although Yuma and El Centro reached the mark, upping the anticipation for the first 90 degree day of the year. Phoenix is extremely likely to blow past 90 today and Tuesday with some desert locations even flirting with triple digits. High pressure will continue to build over the Southwest with H5 heights rising into the 586-588 dm range and with mostly clear skies above allowing plenty of sunshine to heat the surface. As these temperatures climb into the mid to upper 90s Monday and Tuesday afternoons, giving a tease of summer, folks should exercise basic heat mitigation actions such as drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous outdoor activity if possible. The heat will quickly abate by midweek as a low pressure system pushes through the Intermountain west. By late Tuesday, the tightening pressure gradient will induce strong gusts across the region with the strongest gusts upwards of 35 miles per hour across Southeast California, and gusts closer to 25 mph across central Arizona. A wind advisory product will likely be issued in the near future to highlight the most concerning wind speeds across portions eastern Riverside and Imperial Counties. By Wednesday, daytime temperatures will drop nearly 15 degrees compared to Monday/Tuesday and will remain near the 80 degree mark through the rest of the week. A secondary impulse will deepen the trough over Arizona late in the week which will not only help keep temperatures at bay but may produce some favorable dynamics for precipitation. There is some discrepancy between the operational models regarding precipitation for the end of the week but the NBM produces 20 to 30% chance of rain across central Arizona. && .AVIATION...Updated at 0547 UTC.
