.SYNOPSIS...A complex combination of fronts will produce rain,
Cascade snow, with freezing rain mainly for the Upper Hood River
Valley and Central Columbia Gorge tonight through Thursday morning.
Then, a very wet and slow moving frontal system will produce
significant rain across the region Thursday night through Saturday.
Additionally as well as gusty winds and dangerous seas on Friday.
Showers will decrease on Sunday followed by a dry start for next
week.

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday...The slug of various weather
impacts headed our way beginning tonight has changed little,
however, the details are starting to become more apparent. The
leading edge of the first front is decaying over the area this
afternoon but has done little to bring measurable precip to the
ground. A dry sub-cloud layer is also contributing to minimal
sprinkles. A parent upper low pressure, centered off the B.C. coast,
is sending an occluded front toward the PacNW coast. It should begin
to bring a moister air mass overhead and is getting pushed eastward
by the front edge of what's ultimately a 140kt+ jet. This increased
moisture, diffluent flow aloft, and forcing winds will enhance
precip generation over our CWA.

Snow levels in the Cascades will be start 2500 feet to the north and
3500 feet to the south with the onset of the precipitation this
evening. 1 to 4 inches of snow can be expected at these lower
elevations before the snow levels rise above 3500 feet later
tonight. Precipitation rates pick up tonight into Thursday morning
and the snow will be heavy in the Cascades. 24 hour snow amounts
could reach 1-2 feet above 4500 feet in the Washington Cascades and
the Oregon Cascades above 5000 feet. Pass accumulations will vary by
elevation from around 10-15" near Bennett Pass east of Government
Camp, 10-15" around Santiam Pass, and 12-18" near Willamette Pass.

Temperatures just to our east in the Columbia Basin and adjoining
Gorge areas have struggled to lift above freezing today. Light
offshore flow through the gorge will keep this cold air lightly
dammed up again our terrain. Snow levels will remain below 1000 feet
in the Central Columbia River Gorge and Upper Hood River Valley this
evening. A quick inch of snow is possible in these areas seem likely
this evening. Then, warming of the air above the surface will bring
a threat for freezing rain for those same areas later in the evening
that will likely persist into Thursday morning. We have added the
Central Gorge in to the Winter Weather Advisory with less than 1/4"
of freezing rain expected. Cold air may remain trapped in the Upper
Hood River Valley and some of the North Oregon Cascade Valleys as
the heavier precipitation arrives, where ice accumulations could end
up greater than a quarter of an inch.

There will be a bit of a break in the action later Thursday morning.
However, areas of the North Oregon/S Washington coast, Coast range,
and the Cascade foothills can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain tonight
through Thursday morning with around 0.5 inch of rain for the
Willamette Valley.

We have issued a Flood Watch covering Thursday evening through
Sunday morning. A very moist warm front will continue rain Thursday
afternoon and evening. Snow levels will rise to above 6000 feet as
this front moves south to north Thursday morning and afternoon. This
warm front taps into subtropical moisture associated with an
atmospheric river, and the rain will be heavy along the coast, coast
range and the Cascades. Then a cold front that fully taps into the
atmospheric river continues the heavy rain Thursday night through
Saturday morning. Models indicate that this front will be quasi-
stationary along the coast and coast range where the rainfall will
be the highest. This prolonged period of rain has the potential to
produce ridiculously high rain amounts with 5 to 10 inches of rain
for the coast and coast range from Thursday afternoon through
Saturday afternoon. Local amounts to 15 inches are possible. The
Willamette Valley and foothills can expect 3 to 5 inches for the
same time period. The Cascades will get hit hardest in Washington
with with 8-10 inches possible. The Oregon Cascades will see less as
the parent upper trough digs offshore with the associated front
taking takes a more north-south orientation to align with the Coast
Range. Mainstem River flooding, small stream flooding, urban
flooding, and land debris slides are all possible hydrological
impacts from this rain.

Besides the heavy rain, there is also potential for marginal high
winds along the beaches and headlands Thursday night and Friday
morning with gusts to around 60 mph. Little has changed and the high
winds watch remains in effect. Inland valleys will also be rather
breezy during this time with gusts pushing toward 30-35 mph.
Although winds of this strength do not typically result in downed
trees, the saturated soils may make it easier for weakened trees to
give way under these winds.

Finally, a high energy ocean swell will enhance the threat for
sneaker waves Friday night into Saturday morning posing another
potential beach hazard. The bulk of this threat falls overnight on
Friday, but anyone planning on walking on the beach Saturday morning
in the ridiculously heavy rain should remain far from the tidal

.LONG TERM...Saturday night through Wednesday...Models agree that
the main moisture axis will move south of the local area by Saturday
night, bringing an end to the heavy rain. Expect precip to turn more
showery at this point. At the same time, snow levels are likely to
lower back below the Cascade passes, but with limited moisture
availability, don't expect significant travel impacts. As the upper
low possibly closes off and shifts south into California, we'll
likely see some ridging into Tuesday, at least of the shortwave
variety. Models are in decent agreement, though, that the overall
pattern will remain progressive. Expect occasional showers next
week, although the forecast looks more dry than wet. Trended PoPs
down a bit Tuesday and Wednesday to follow latest model trends.

.AVIATION... A complicated weather pattern will play out in the
next 24-36 hours with a stalling front offshore, an approaching
front from the south and a fast moving front from the northwest.
Strong winds are picking up along the coast with KONP seeing rain
and ceilings starting to lower. VFR conditions will deteriorate
to MVFR ceilings after 03Z as the stratus deck moves in. Gusty
winds out of the south will continue through the night into
tomorrow. IFR conditions in central and southern Willamette
valley are possible by tomorrow morning. LLWS could pose a
problem for areas as surface winds will be out of the south with
upper air winds coming from the southwest.

KPDX AND APPROACHES...VFR conditions are expected through this
afternoon. A stratus deck around 5000 ft is expected to move in
this evening. Ceilings will most likely lower to MVFR criteria
but gusty conditions should keep visibility as a mix of VFR-MVFR.

.MARINE...A front is currently moving across the waters bringing
SCA winds and seas. Brief, localized gale gusts are possible
later this evening. A gale warning has not been issued based on
the winds being marginal and rather brief. These strong gust
shouldn't last past midnight.

A Gulf of Alaska low will grow and decay over the course of
today and Friday, in this process it will spin off shortwaves of
energy in every direction. A shortwave low will move across the
waters Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, gradually
intensifying as it moves north into Friday. There is fairly good
agreement between models that this system will bring sustained
gales starting tomorrow evening with the potential of storm force
gusts.

Probabilistic wave models are showing high confidence that wave
heights will be greater than 20 ft Thursday night into Friday
morning. Persistent southerly winds will bring wind waves as high
as 15 ft overnight Thursday. A westerly swell originating from
this Gulf of Alaska low will reach the coast at 20 ft, 16 sec.
Together this wave field will produce an overall wave height that
could reach 25 ft in some areas.

Winds and seas will diminish by Saturday. Current observations
show that the primary wave period is between 14 to 16 seconds.
Long period swells increase hazardous sneaker wave conditions.
