Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
924 AM EST Fri Jan 11 2019
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to build to the east, influencing
our weather through Saturday. Low pressure is forecast to
progress across the southeastern states on Saturday night before
passing off the North Carolina coast on Sunday. The low is
anticipated to move out to sea with high pressure following in
its wake for the early part of the new week. A cold front
approaching from the northwest is expected to arrive late
Wednesday or early Thursday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
High pressure will continue to build into our region from the
northwest and west for today. We are anticipating mostly sunny
conditions with a northwest wind around 10 to 15 mph.
High temperatures are forecast to range from the 20s in the
Poconos and far northern New Jersey to the upper 30s in southern
Delaware.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
A quiet night across the region with high pressure shifting
overhead tonight. Skies will generally be clear overnight but
some clouds may start to move back in late tonight towards early
Saturday morning.
Winds will drop off tonight and with generally clear skies we
should have a good radiational cooling setup. Temperatures
should drop off fairly quickly tonight with lows in the teens
across much of the area and single digits across the northern
areas.
&&
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Saturday through Sunday night...
Main focus for this period continues to be the low pressure
system that will bring some snow late Saturday into Sunday.
However the combination of cold, dry surface ridging over the
northeast along with a lack of phasing between the northern and
southern jet streams looks to keep this from being a widespread
heavy snow event for our forecast area.
To start the period early Saturday, surface ridging extending
south from high pressure over Ontario will be situated over the
area with a developing low near Oklahoma. This low will move
eastward into the southeastern states through the day Saturday
supported supported by an upper level trough with the southern
stream. Meanwhile over our forecast area, mid and high level
cloudiness will increase well out ahead of this system. Also,
shortwave energy associated with the northern stream will dive
southeast into the lower Great Lakes by late day. The
combination of this disturbance and warm air advection well out
ahead of the low could bring some very light snow or flurries
into the region during the afternoon but it will take the low
levels a while to saturate so we keep POPs low. Highs will
generally be in the low to mid 30s except 20s across the far
north.
For Saturday night, forecast models continue to indicate that
leading edge of warm advection combined with northern stream
shortwave will bring a period of light snow Saturday evening
into the overnight...affecting areas mainly near and south of
the I-78 corridor. In fact latest guidance is slightly more
robust with this first part of the system while being more
suppressed with the second part. This first round should taper
to flurries after midnight. This will be followed by the main
area of moisture associated with the low arriving near sunrise
Sunday with the second round. However this now looks to be
mainly confined to the southern Delmarva and perhaps extreme
southern NJ. For these areas expect a second period of snow
Sunday morning before precip pushes south in the afternoon as
the low tracks from the Carolina coast eastward out to sea. By
this time generally expect 2 to 3 with locally up to 4 inches of
snow over the southern Delmarva for areas from roughly Dover
southward. This should be mostly snow but it's possible a bit of
rain could mix in from Sussex Co Delaware to Cape May. To the
north, about 1 to 2 inches can be expected in an area from Berks
County PA to Ocean County NJ and points south including the
Greater Philadelphia area but most of the snow in this region
will fall Saturday night with Sunday looking to be mainly dry.
Confidence on these amounts is in the moderate range as it's
possible if the system becomes even more surpressed amounts
could be a bit lower while if it tracks farther north amounts
could be higher. For this reason, and since this is not expected
until Saturday night decided to hold off on any headlines.
Any lingering flurries quickly come to an end Sunday evening
with high pressure building back in from the north bringing a
gradual clearing trend. Highs Sunday look to be again mostly in
the low to mid 30s except colder north with lows Sunday night
ranging from the low to mid teens over the southern Poconos and
NW NJ to the 20s along and south of the I-95 corridor.
Monday through Thursday...
We are still expecting high pressure to build into our region
from the west and southwest for Monday and Tuesday. A cold front
from the northwest is expected to arrive on Wednesday or
Thursday. The front is not forecast to have much moisture
associated with it.
Temperatures will likely remain below normal Monday, returning
a bit above normal for Tuesday through Thursday.
&&
