.SYNOPSIS...
Cold and dry weather will continue into tonight. Another storm
system will bring snow Tuesday through Wednesday with the
potential for heavy snow accumulations over southeastern
Washington and lower Idaho Panhandle. Another round of snow is
possible by the end of the week into the weekend as cold
temperatures persist.

.DISCUSSION...
...Heavy snow Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday for
Southeastern Washington and the Central Idaho Panhandle...
Tonight...The large upper trough that brought the latest round of
cold boreal temperatures to the region is sagging down into the
Great Basin this afternoon and being displaced over the
northwestern US with a weak short wave ridge. For tonight this
ridge will keep our regional weather cold and largely dry...but a
weak mid level warm front barely visible descending out of
British Columbia will bring some increasing clouds which should
moderate overnight lows from their basement potential...but still
widespread low teens with more than a handful of single digits
above zero look plausible by dawn Tuesday.
Tuesday through Wednesday...Yet more accumulating snow is
expected for this period...with the southeastern Washington and
Idaho Panhandle zones shaping up for a strong hit with light to
moderate accumulations elsewhere. The upper level ridge will
quickly depart Tuesday morning...with the aforementioned mid
level warm front bringing some very light and very local
accumulations of snow in the morning mainly to the Idaho
Panhandle. The ridge axis will be gone off to the east by 18Z and
then the door will open for a moist westerly flow off the Pacific
enhancing into widespread light snow on the low level warm front
over most of the forecast area. Only the deep basin and Cascades
Lee may be skipped over by this next storm as westerly flow
produced a precipitation shadow during the main period of moisture
transport...but will be subject to hit-and-miss snow showers as
the storm departs on Wednesday.
This next storm will consist of another northwest trajectory
trough aggressively digging into the northwestern US. The
difference between this storm and the multiple similar troughs of
last week will be the development and evolution of the surface low
pressure. Whereas last week's storms produced the surface low off
the coast...this trough will focus it's cyclonic diffluence area
over eastern Washington and generate surface cyclogenesis over
the southern Columbia Basin and migrate into central Idaho by
Wednesday morning. This will place the Palouse and points south
and east square in the bullseye of the heaviest snow swath with
the peripheral zones of the upper Columbia Basin and Spokane area
and mountain zones to the north subject to moderate but still
appreciable accumulations.
Thus...with multiple models in good agreement on this scenario and
consistent from run-to-run confidence is high enough to upgrade
the current Winter Storm Watches to Winter Storm Warnings for this
core area with Winter Weather Advisories on the margins of the
expected bullseye. The Palouse...higher terrain around the L-C
Valley...the Blues and likely the Camas Prairie as well are going
to get walloped beginning Tuesday afternoon and running through
Wednesday night with 6 to 10 inches of fluffy low water equivalent
snow. The L-C valley itself will probably achieve low end warning
criteria of 3 to 5 inches. The Coeur D'Alene area will be added
to the Warning list mainly because the initial warm frontal snow
will bring an extra inch or two over the adjacent Spokane zone due
to orographic enhancement. The Camas Prairie will remain a watch
at this time as per collaboration with neighboring offices but
expect this zone to be upgraded to a warning with the next
forecast cycle. The Central Idaho Panhandle Mountains will get an
advisory due to higher warning criteria in this zone than the low
land zones. There will likely be high impacts to travel across
Lookout Pass during this storm.
By Wednesday the surface low will be moving out of the region into
the Great Basin. The entire region will come under the very cold
and unstable center of the upper trough which will promote random
snow showers with local further minor accumulations. Another
round of biting north winds will begin to be drawn down the
northern gaps...but these winds will not make it to the drift
prone open terrain of the Palouse until probably Thursday or so.

Wednesday night through Monday: Longwave ridge persists off the
coast and keeps the cold northwest trajectory of approach for
disturbances continuing on through the weekend and into the early
part of next week, thus in agreement with not only the 8-10 day
outlook but also the 8-14 day outlook and the Week 3-4 outlooks from
the Climate Prediction Center which all support a continuation of
below normal temperatures. This makes snow level forecasting easy
and a non-issue for most, if not all of this time interval with snow
levels at valley floors. As far as significant disturbances of note
dropping down in this provided cold northwest flow the airmass
remains cold and conditionally unstable enough Wednesday night into
Thursday for snow showers, some with enough intensity for
spotty/localized higher accumulations, especially for the
Washington Blue Mountains, Camas Prairie and the Washington and
Idaho Palouse as a northwest trajectory of approach for cold storms
there is an approach best favored for enhancing snowfall. Otherwise
another weather system maintaining a weak subtropical moisture feed
drops down through the area Friday. A cold conditionally unstable
airmass in its wake allows for a continuation of snow showers
through the weekend that would again favor the Washington Blue
Mountains, Camas Prairie, and the Washington and Idaho Palouse. The
cold northwest flow continues into Monday but models suggest the
offshore ridge axis may move close enough to the coast and gain a
positive tilt so move the storm track further east and away, but
confidence is not high. /Pelatti

18Z TAFS: A dry modified arctic air mass is becoming entrenched
over the forecast area. This will keep low level boundary layer
fog to a minimum tonight. There are fields of mid level
stratocumulus with bases around 5 to 6KFT MSL sloshing around the
Columbia Basin today but all TAF sites are expected to remain VFR
through this evening. Tonight a weak disturbance will drop into
the region on northwest flow aloft bringing increasing and
thickening clouds with MVFR conditions possible after 09Z with
scattered -shsn especially over the KGEG area TAF sites and KPUW
