.SYNOPSIS...
Snow will taper off the Blue mountains and southern Panhandle
this evening, while drier air moves into the region. This will be
short lived as the next round of precipitation arrives Thursday.
Anticipate moderate to heavy snow across central Washington with a
wintry mix over the Columbia Basin late Thursday and Thursday
evening. Unsettled weather continues for Friday and through the
weekend with light snow likely. Colder weather returns early next
week with snow chances increasing.

.DISCUSSION...
Tonight: A frontal band will slowly sag south of the Blue mountains,
Camas Prairie and central Idaho Panhandle early this evening.
Snow levels are near 4K ft this afternoon and think most of any
accumulations are at the higher elevations. Northerly winds have
cleared the skies in the Okanogan Valleys in the western Basin
and this clearing trend should spread east. High pressure will be
across the region overnight as winds decrease. May see some patchy
freezing fog in the northern valleys overnight. By morning,
easterly winds increase especially across north Idaho.
Thursday through Thursday night: After the brief respite, winter
weather returns as low pressure moves in from the southwest and a
warm front arrives. Surface low pressure forms in the lee of the
Cascades while warm low level tongue pushes across the Columbia
Basin and southeast Washington with rain to mixed precipitation.
Will begin to raise winter highlights across the Cascades and
Columbia Basin.
Snow: Light snow will begin in the central Cascades Thursday morning
and expand during the late morning hours. Moderate to heavy snow
will be found in the Wenatchee area and Waterville Plateau with
good upslope conditions and track of the surface low with snow
amounts of 4 to 7 inches possible. Light to moderate snow is
expected in the east slopes of the northern Cascades into the
Okanogan Valley.
Wintry Mix: Low level warm air will move in across the Columbia
Basin, Palouse and southeast Washington. The lower elevations will
mix out in the LC Valley and most of the Palouse with the snow
transitioning to rain as temperatures rise through the 30s. The
Columbia Basin may experience some cold air damning and as snow
mixes with freezing rain and spreads toward the Moses Lake area
and northern Columbia Basin, which may impact I-90 and Highway 2
late Thursday afternoon and early evening.
Winds: Northerly winds will increase down the Okanogan Valley Thursday
and Thursday night and the mountains of northeast Washington and
north Idaho with gusts of 15 to 25 mph which may lead to patchy
blowing snow.
Friday: As an upper level remains parked off the WA/OR coast, an
other wave rotates into the region and bring in more waves of
precipitation. The models focus the best qpf across southeast
Washington into north Idaho with another round of light snowfall.
Meanwhile, temperatures moderate a couple degrees with most low
level daytime highs climbing above freezing in the mid 30s to near
40 under light southerly breezes. /rfox.
Friday Night through Wednesday....The upper level low continues
to move into the Pacific Northwest with a broad trough
influencing weather in the region. Within this larger longwave
trough, model guidance is showing an embedded shortwave trough
continuing to bring unsettled weather. These remaining snow
showers will occur mostly in the mountains, such as the Cascades
and Idaho Panhandle. The precipitation amounts are trending lower
with totals less than a quarter of an inch.
Sunday through Monday....Late Sunday into Monday, the upper level
low moves out of the region as we see the arrival of a highly
amplified ridge. This begins the southerly flow of cold and dry
Canadian air which will will bring locally strong winds and
possible low wind chills to the Okanogan Valley and northern Idaho
Panhandle. We'll see low temperatures drop into single digits and
teens with highs temperatures below freezing throughout the
region.
Tuesday through Wednesday....On Tuesday, the ridge begins to
flatten as a trough drops in from the northwest. The models are in
agreement and we are growing in confidence that this will bring
the return of unsettled weather and our next storm system. With
the cold air, there is a good chance for snow arrival in the
middle of next week. JS

.AVIATION...
18Z TAFs: The frontal boundary sagged south of the KGEG-KCOE
corridor, leaving an IFR/MVFR conditions. Snow will decrease from
KPUW through midday while a snow/rain mix lingers KLWS into the
afternoon. Anticipate partial clearing to VFR behind the
boundary with drier northerly flow, as seen at KEAT and KMWH,
which should spread south and east. Easterly winds develop
overnight especially at KCOE, KPUW and KLWS should should keep
skies VFR. Lesser winds will be felt near KGEG where stratus and
fog with IFR conditions are possible. The next weather system will
spread mid level clouds into KMWH and KEAT by Thursday morning.
